Reverse Camera

I have an audi a3 sline 2011, i have been trying to connect an aftermaket reverse camera and was just wondering which wires on the reverse light connector would be the positive and negative wires? thanks,
 
my after market head unit switches on the reverse cam when reverse is selected, so dident need to use reverse light . depends on what head unit you have ?

Pure black is always negative. Rest are most likely positive. Just disasemble tailight, check which wire is going inside the reverse bulb, take the positive from there and as a negative, you can use car chasis.

Another solution would be, as @a3 black mentioned to get CAN BUS decoder (as that's how reverse camera in his car and my car works) and plug it in in the back of the headunit (if it doesn't have CAN BUS decoder integrated into the headunit, as mine didn't have but I got it in the package with the headunit).

i have a canbus box but my reverse camera requires me to still connect the wire to the reverse light, so i did all the wiring today everything went well only problem is that when i turn on the ignition and go into reverse the camera works perfectly, but when i turn the car on and go into reverse i get a black screen. any solutions guy?? thanks.
 
I basically have this problem in reverse! Black screen when ignition on and cam feed with ignition off:(

yeah the exact same, i don't really know whats causing it. everything is wired up correctly.
 
Had the same issue. Get a +12V live feed from the cigarette lighter or any constantly live +12V that you can find in the boot and it will work.

Edit: It is very important to be constant +12V or CAN BUS will turn the camera off again (that is what happens when you connect the camera to reversing light).
 
I wired the batt +ve for my camera directly from memory off the wiper motor . One of the leads had ign fed 12v.

yeah i realised that today and was trying to connect it to the cigarette lighters 12v wire.
where could i find an 12v from inside the boot? and what wire would be negative and positive in the rear wiper cluster.
 
Mine is wire in side the tailgate.
haven't looked for a live wire in the boot but there will be a switched one from the amp behind a side panel. Get yourself a test light with a pointy tip and probe around.

The reverse camera seems to work when I only connect the positive wire, does that mean I do not have to connect the negative wire?

Thanks I'm going to just wire it from the ciggerete lighter if I can't find another 12v wire. I think I'll connect the negative as well just incase
 
I found +12V constant in the boot (as there was an option with 8P to have 12V outlet in the boot so the wiring is there even though I don't have 12V outlet there) at the right side of the boot when you open the trim (right side when looking at the car from behind). Also connected negative just in case although it was not needed.

I don't have the 12v outlet in the boot but ill check tomorrow if the wires are there, thanks. There are 3 wires, one is red which is positive and then you have one that is brown and another one which has a stripe down it, which one of those two are the negative wire?.

No problem mate. Easiest check is to take multimeter, switch to DC voltage, put the black probe on the car chasis where there is no paint (any screw without paint will do) and then with red probe touch the ends of all the wires. The one which gives 0V as a result is negative. Do this with car turned off, ignition on and car on (all 3 cases) to make sure.
 
So i got the power from the cigarette lighter today from the front, now everything was fine and worked until i pu on my headlights and the camera turn off. the camera seems to work when i have my DRL's on but not any other light, any advice? @Rideen
 
Did you get the correct terminal?
Is there still +12v when the lights are turned on?
Did you connect the earth?

That is odd. Where did you connect the negative wire?

yeah i connected it to the cig lighter in the front of the car so there is 12v when the lights are on, no earth wire came with the camera just a positive and negative.

I connected the wire to the negative wire on the cig lighter.
 
Shot in the dark, but try disconnecting the negative completely or connect it to a chasis screw that doesn't have paint on it.

i disconnected the negative and it all worked perfectly, thanks. but then just my luck my camera died so i have to buy a new one, luckily i had a old reverse camera to test it out on.
 
Guys loving your work here.

You've got me wanting a reverse camera now. I've got a 2011 RNS-E with gloss black surround. What specifically will I need, component wise, to get a reverse camera up and running?

Unsure of how to wire it so it comes on when reverse is selected. I'm competent with wires, but f*cked when it comes to computers, coding etc...

I'll love you forever if you can help me...
