So I replaced the passenger side upper rear control arm for the MOT a in Feb. Heard a knocking the other day and after a bit of checking found the same control arm is popping up and down and is loose. I think the actual socket the control arm bolts into, the bit with the pinch bolt is worn and even when torqued up is too loose.

Anyone know part name of this? is it the hub carrier leg? cant find reference to it anywhere?

any help appreciated

Was the new arm tightened with the weight of the suspension on the floor? or the arm tightened at the correct angle (they quote the angle in haynes). If not, you can tear the bush inside the arm.

cheers for the reply, all tightened as per the Haynes book.

Its the knuckle end that is popping up and down, the bit tightened in by the pinch bolt

Unless it was genuine Audi part (Lemforder), I'm not surprised if it's failed early. There's a lot of junk on the market, especially cheap Chinese rubbish on EBay. Meyle HD parts come with 4-year warranty and are worth every penny.

It's possible to damage the strut itself where the pinch-bolt is inserted. If the gap where the control arms locate has been prized open then it may cause the issues your experiencing. Try new control arms and replace the pinch bolt as a matter of course (lubed of course).

Meyle HD have mixed reviews.

I had Meyle HD fitted to mines and ripped after 2 years approx.

If you do need to change arms I recommend go with what was fitted originally which are Lemforders. Some are TRW too so check.

Thanks chaps.

Decided to finally investigate again today and it looks like the very first time it was replaced they must have damaged the socket somehow, possibly prising open? so it looks like i'm going to have to replace the hub leg.

:(

Thanks for the help.
