Went for a long drive to Scarborough today and I was impressed with the average MPG...

Funnily enough I drove from Scarborough to Bradford late on Friday and get just short of half that.

It was a errrr, spirited drive.

Lots of roadworks with 50mph average speed cameras on the M62 helped with the economy!

Went for a drive yesterday and was determined to get some better economy, about 30 miles with the Cruise on 65 then 14 in the m1 roadworks stuck at around 50.....impressed on average consumption!!! Not bad for a big ol girl don't think I could get up to yours though Dave!

Ps....misses took the piccy! Haha

The BiTDI does 50mpg, so was expecting more people getting the claimed 64mpg which is combined.

Have managed a true 47mpg over 7,000 miles from new. A good mix of city commute, fast A and motorway. Pretty pleased with that.

I just picked up my new A6 Avant 2.0D Ultra S-Tronic yesterday. Managed 47Mpg on the way back from the dealership - approx 30 miles. Very impressed with this, considering - now - 40 miles on the clock. The A6 Multitronic I had before could just about muster 50Mpg if I drove like a nun and had plenty of 50Mph roadworks in the way on a journey! Not impressed with that box. My A6 2.0D Manual before that car could do 64Mpg and the guy I sold it to managed 74Mpg driving to Cornwall one day! (He wasn't a nun!).
Looking forward to seeing how the new Ultra Engine behaves. It used to be that Audi Diesels needed about 7-8K miles before they settled in and showed their true MPG capability.
First post on here in a few years! Nice to be back.. seeing some good debate on here.

Pete

IceHanger looks like you were using the Economy car drive setting...(E7 = Economy on gear 7 right?)? Does that work well then? Certainly an impressive MPG figure...

Yup that's correct, to be honest I don't think it makes any difference to the MPG, I tend to use Economy more when poodling so it doesn't drop 3 gears when I touch the the accelerator, and makes the adaptive cruise a lot more progressive. It does make the car very wooly to drive through haha

I've not managed to beat that figure yet, normal 100 or so mile run (~70mph) to inlaws with the sprogs in gives about 48-50mpg normally, the warm weathers helping lots mind but I can be very gentle on the throttle (takes so much concentration not to gun it )

Aaahh but I think it does make a difference and I agree that it makes it "wooly"!! :) The difference is that the Economy mode ensures that the S-Tronic box uses the new "coasting" mode, so that when you take your foot off the accelerator on a straight/down-hill and puts the box into neutral... I don't _think_ the other car modes (Dynamic, Comfort, etc..) do that. I've always been told, "never ever take the car out of gear down a hill, you'll lose all control yadda yadda..." (when I had a manual) but it really DOES boost that MPG figure on a long descent.

Ooo maybe I need to have a further play, assuming it's the same on the Tiptronic box.
I had read something to do with the sports diff as well but not had chance to do further digging. I'll drive back in dynamic later and see what I get

The efficiency mode also reduces the effect of the aircon, which obviously affects the MPG. You can monitor this by going into "efficiency program" in the DIS and seeing how the "bar" position changes when you go into efficiency mode.

That would explain it...ACs only on rarely!
Manufactures way of eaking out every last 0.1mpg and co2 levels, haha

wow - those are impressive numbers... if I drive modestly, then 30-35mpg average for a full tank is fairly normal.... if it's >35mpg, then I've been driving like a saint and it's been majority open, straight A-roads.... 38-odd mpg is the best I've every managed - never averaged over 40mpg for a full tank, because of the stop-start and gearbox, it doesn't drop that much in town if I continue to drive gently, but any sort of spirited driving and I'm lucky if the average short term starts with a 2.... 22-25mpg is perfectly normally if I've been having even a modest amount of fun..... that said, I do such low mileage, I still only spend ~£500 a year on fuel ;) If I did much motorway mileage I'd certainly look at adding one of these new "ultra" TDI's to the stable....
