2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Dealers are funny I topped my oil up with 1ltr the other day and ive done about 340miles and its used loads more than it did when i had the test done by my local dealer. So I called up to log it with the service guy telling him im watching it to 620 miles and if it carries on loosing oil I will bring it in...he went on to tell me that he thought they had proven that my car didnt have the issue cause they did the test earlier in the year ha ha ha

Told him it doesnt matter that the car can start to use oil whenever so just cause it past a consumption test doesnt mean my car wont suffer the same oil consumption issues later on in life which it looks like it is doing now....he then got my point and told me to keep and eye on it and go from there.....told him about here and that he should get himself on here and have a butchers at this post ha ha
All depends on your driving. I had two oil tests done within 1000 miles of each other. One passed at 0.14l per 1000km and the other failed at over 0.5l. First test all motorway and 2nd test all stop start rush hour traffic.

All the dealers and Audi UK are aware of this thread! I know as I have spoken to both Audi UK and Audi Sport in the last 24 hrs!!

The oil consumption can occur very quickly. Once the piston rings start passing, the oil deposits very quickly into the cylinder head and ultimately through the exhaust system giving that characteristic tdi exhaust look.

Do the tests in town traffic for sure. I did mine on the motorway but still it used 0.9 litres for the 621 miles. Would be double that usage around town!

Just taken some time to read through this thread again. It's taken some time! (I'm working nights). It's unbelievable how Audi still haven't recalled this yet!
As for my calls to Audi UK recently and chats with Audi Sport itself, let's just say that things are moving on...

My car is just undergoing the first oil consumption test..just about to finish up to 600 miles and the mmi oil level is nearly empty... This deemed as a fail? Also how much people been paying for the tests?

Also my one year warranty had just run out {bought the car for AUC} last year... Is it worth extending another year (named component or comprehensive) in anticipate work may need to be done if the oilconsumption tests fail?

Help meeeeee...im proper panicking like crazy

A sad Miss Cat xxx

If the MMI is reading anywhere under half way it will be deemed a fail. They are very accurate as I found out with mine. You should have no problems in getting it fixed for free. Did you pay for the consumption test?

Hi guys..Im a newby here... want to know if there are any South Africans here that might be able to help .
I own a 2009 Q5 2.0TFSI... I bought it second hand... ran awesomely... then I started to see the excessive oil use as mentioned... I am now at 1L per 650km... which is ridiculous... the car has a full service record... will there be any chance that Audi might help out and how do I go about finding out if they will lend me a hand.

Any help will greatly be appreciated.

Bruce

I'm not South African but I spend ten years a year in that glorious country if that counts for anything...
If you're a South African living in the UK, it sounds like you have a good chance of getting your Q5's engine fixed for free. If however you're a South African living in South Africa, you may not be so lucky. If you have already spoken to Audi SA and they have said 'Voetsek!', then you can either shell out for an engine rebuild (costly!), sell the car on to some other sucker (unethical!) or you could try something I have long advocated, which is to try running your car on a less volatile engine oil. The last time I went to a branch of Midas, you could get Shell HX5 20W50. The new stuff (look for A3/B3 on the back of the can) is actually a very good oil. Don't do this if you think there is even the remotest chance Audi SA will fix your engine for free because if you do do it, they will use the non-standard oil as a reason to wriggle out of their obligations. If you want more explanation on the reasons for using a heavy, less volatile oil, read some of my previous posts. Good luck!

What makes u so sure it be fixed for free? =( my warranty ran out on the 21st may...so I am panicking without valid warranty they gonna give me a big hefty hill... Not yet paid for the consumption test.. They quoted me £60... Car is going back in on Monday morning... Feel they need to do another test?

May depend on car service history, but my '09 car with 68,000 miles on it was fixed for free without any question by my local dealer. The warranty had ran out well over 2 *years* before I took it in.

More and more owners being treated this way, and some of those that have paid for rebuilds or consumption tests have been refunded.

Just saw it on watchdog. Be very interesting next week then! I have personally contacted watchdog and will do again over the next few days...

Also very shortly there will be a new group on audi-sport.net in relation to the oil consumption problem. This will enable members to centrally voice their concerns and experiences...

The Audi UK customer phone no. Is 0800699888.
There are members who didn't have to pay the £60 consumption test charge. Others including myself are now getting refunds for them. I'm still waiting for the cheque for my 2 tests but I'm assured it will be with me soon...
As for the rebuild don't worry. I'm certain it will be fixed for free.
As you are aware this will be on BBC watchdog next week. Let's all give Anne a call ;)

I'm glad this is going on watchdog now...it will add so much more weight to my argument if they find there is a problem... Which I think it is...

Mike should I be contacting audi UK now asap? As said I told them about my worry before the warranty ran out so I hope this should add some weight as well... I'm so worried... Really been out off audi now.. Been driving BMW for the past few cars... Fancied a change now this happens.... :*(

I would certainly give Audi UK a call first thing tomorrow. I think a lot of customers will! Get a case assigned and take it from there.
I wouldn't lose too much faith in Audi as the car is great when fixed, however the experience of the tests has made me consider my future new car options...

I'd contact Audi UK right now if your dealer hasn't confirmed that any work or consumption testing will be free..

Mainly because if you wait until after Watchdog next week, the phone lines may be rather busy... :whistle2:

Yep I think the Audi phone lines may be rather busy next Friday....
Hope my cheque arrives by then!
Good luck Charles in dealing with all the new cases...

Yep Im still in South Africa.. not so easy to get stuff fixed without paying for it over here let me tell you that...I have tried to make contact with Audi South Africa support and will take it from there... Id be very surprised if they fix the car for me..in fact... Id pass out from excitement!
Ill first try that route before I buy up Midas in the oil department :)

I have been using 5W40 Synthetic oil up to now.... if this is not fixed then I have no choice but to trade it in at a Audi Dealer for another audi.. believe me it will be nothing prior 2012! Will serve them justice to sit with the piece of junk engine if they dont want to help me...

Audi edinburgh are charging through the roof for the consumption test. Been quoted £140-160. Even although I idled the test onto the back of the booking to have the water pump replaced at £680.

A3 1.8tfsi for reference. 82k, out of warranty.

The following topic is set to be on Watchdog next Thursday

I'm really looking forward to Audis response to their grilling. I wonder whether their 'case by case basis' will really wish with Anne Robinson.

How much oil are you using? I'd contact Audi CS if that's your dealers attitude.

I'd say my 1.8 Tfsi unit is showing the problem at the upper end of the scale, last measured check was a litre in 750 miles. Recon if I drive hard, it'll drink that litre in 600 miles. (Tested over 100 mile run)

Made a joke over on the a3 section that I'm running 2 stroke. I say joke. The reality is its not a million miles away.

I HAVE emailed audi CS, Specifically the lady I'm told deals with these cases, with the long 2nd name.

Was told they will only open a case after a consumption test.

Definitely be a failure mate!

When the car misfires and runs on 3 cylinders is sounds not far off a 2 stroke! Had a few looks when I chugged my 3 yr old £35K tractor into Cardiff Audi. Funny thing was when it was parked up and I was airing my disappointment with the service staff there were customers 'viewing' my car in the car park! Should have sold it there and then!!

Seems personnel dealing with cases at Audi UK may have changed. I dealt with Kelly first time around and now Charles. Who next?

It appears all oil issues go to Charles. I feel sorry for the guy having to deal with the situation but keeping up the hold Audi expect of him.

Alright mate, I have spoken to Charles a few times and he said he was Audi customer relations manager. Kelly said she was a case manager? Any difference?
I feel sorry for the Audi UK staff as they will receive a lot of new cases to deal with in the next few days...

Case managers are appointed at the start of a complaint (any complaint), Charles is the main Customer relations manager when dealing with major complaints such as the oil consumption issue.
I have also heard this week that VOSA are aware of the issue and are looking into it..... AUDI may be very busy shortly.... VOSA = recall lol

when i contacted Audi uk last week they put me through to my local dealer who then booked me in for a consumption test. There was no mention of how much this was going to cost. Looking at a previous post should i be chasing this up for costings if there is any or just wait untill im at Audi Leeds in June? Also looking at the post above i didnt have a case opened after my complaint or at least i think i didnt.

To be honest the whole phone call didnt fill me with much confidence.

Hi Ryan, a case won't be opened until the initial consumption test is completed and failed.
My advice is ..... when your car fails the initial test, don't wait for the dealer to contact Audi UK, contact them yourself and inform them that your car has just failed the consumption test, they will likely ask which dealer is dealing with it, then they should automatically open an individual case.
Your dealer may not charge you for the test and may go straight to Audi UK (which is what should be happening now) to discuss next steps.

I had my engine rebuild done FOC, and then received a cheque from Audi UK refunding my initial test and subsequent 1st fix costs.

Hope this helps mate

Thanks for the heads up,

does it matter that mine is a 1.8TFSI and not a 2.0? is there anything i should be saying when i get to Audi or just wait for the Results of the consumption test?

It shouldn't - both engines are suffering the same problems, from the same flaw.

I joked earlier about my 1.8Tfsi a3 running on 2stroke mixture. 2 stroke mix seems to be defined as anything between 1:8 and 1:100.

Maths :

34.5MPG. Known oil use is 1000ml oil in 750 miles.
750/34.5 gives us total gallons used in 750 miles = 21.73 Gallons of petrol
21.73*4.54 gives us total litres used in 750 miles= 98.65 Litres of petrol...Same distance as 1L oil....hence

98.65:1 Ratio of fuel to oil.

And THAT, dear Audi owners, is 2 stoke mix.

I agree with one difference...

Modern 2-stroke oils are different to engine oils in that they tend to be based on something called Poly Iso-Butylene (PIB). PIB is used because it burns much more cleanly than the base oils (both mineral and synthetic) that you get in normal engine oil which is why 2T exhaust tends to be smokeless.
What you have is a 1960s vintage 2-stroke! If it wasn't for the clean-up done by your (now knackered) catalytic converter, you would be leaving great trails of smoke as you drive off..

The only thing that worries me is the car doesn't have a full Audi service history. It has a full service history just not all with Audi.

Mine is the same. Well looked after, but just not at a stealer.
I don't see it should make a massive Difference. They can't turn round and say that a service by a third party using oem parts has caused, or enhanced/increased a fault that has been caused by something present at manufacture.
