My handbrake is goosed and when you release the lever the brakes don't free off. The lever operation at the caliper is ok it just doesn't release the brake.

The Haynes Book of Lies says these are not serviceable and caliper renewal is required. Before I shell out on replacements can anybody confirm these are not serviceable units?

Cheers

The handbrake lever on the rear of the caliper will have corroded and will be binding.

Have you looked to see if the arm is rotating back to its stop when you release the lever inside the car?

You can dismantle them, but its VERY fiddly. You need to remove the piston, then remove a really awkward circlip and dismantle the handbrake part.

For the money it costs, and the time and effort and frustration involved, just get new calipers from brakes international.

The lever on the caliper does work as it should. Your comments are pretty much in line with my thoughts. Didn't want to shell out to be told after they are easy to DIY service.

Cheers

I rebuilt my rear calipers a couple of years back because of the same issue, took about an hour a side and one has held up fine until now,the other deleveloped a leak from the handbrake lever, for the price of the rebuild kit vs the price of a caliper it mightn't be a bad idea to try before spending big

Hold your horses, this is an easy fix. I had the same issue with my V6 Amtrak and there's absolutely no need to shell out on a new caliper. Read this first: http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/inside-the-rear-caliper-of-a-b5-a4.182572/

It's uber tight now... just like it was when it rolled off the production line at Ingolstadt. You will probably have to adjust the handbrake cable. Use Duckoil penetrating release on it a dew days before tackling job.

I guess it depends on your outlook.

I rebuilt a pair of S4 alloy rear calipers, and it was an annoying fiddling frustrating job. A year later one had re-seized and the other started leaking after a track day.

Brakes international were selling new calipers for £65 each on exchange. The seal kit from Audi was something like 15quid a side, and doesnt include pistons or the bits for the handbrake mechanism. Pistons can be sourced but are a further £20ish per caliper.

When you tot it all up, its just not worth the effort when you can simply order a brand new caliper and know it'll be fine for another 10 years.

Euro are selling Padgid for £50 and I'm sure you could find a 5 or 10 % discount code.

All sorted :) Best bit is it was FREE. My cars been in at a mates workshop having the TGV flywheel and RS4 clutch fitted and I dropped it off again on Saturday for a check over and to ensure everything was peachy after being in so many bits (all fine). Picked it up again today to find he had stripped an rebuilt both rear calipers. Top fella :)
