Hello all. Having issues with the roof pump and motor assembly of my A4.

2 weeks ago it decided to stop working and was stuck from open roof position (roof down) and figured I would go further in to the problem to find out the motor was burnt out and not working. bench tested and checked over by electrician and it was a simple case of changing the bushes inside.

Managed to get it installed back within the pump assembly and bled the system by manually operating the roof several times with fresh hydraulic fluid.

The moter seems to work perfectly as I can hear it operating now.

I reckon a problem already existed before the moter packed in as I tried to pull it forward to close whilst I had my mate to press the switch so im guessing I burnt the motor out in the process of doing that.

The only response I am getting is the latches opening and that's it.

If any one can help me out here I would greatly appreciate it

Thanks

Hello AK,

From reading your thread, hope I'm understanding the current situation correctly - when you try the roof now, the front unlatches at the screen header and moves up around 30 - 40 mm, the pump motor starts running but no further movement of the top ?

If this is the case I'd suggest that you take a look at the nylon drive coupling that transfers drive between the e motor and the spigot of the pump. These can fracture allowing the motor to run but not drive the pump, or alternatively, if the motor has been off and stripped / overhauled it may have been left out when the reassembled ???

This little drive piece is available as a part from Audi / TPS around £12 / £15 iirc.

Hope this is what the prob is !

Good luck with it , Gary

Hi. thanks for all your responses. I disassembled and check the motor when removing it of the pump and found no damage or missing spigot.

the only thing I was unsure about was a pin that was attached to the rotor arm of the pump that could slide out but I never actually removed it when removing originally and then installing back in. It looks as if though this pin hits one of the fins of the spigot on the motor but unsure. Please if you can give me more input on this, I would appreciate it. But as far as I can see the drive from the spigot to the rotor assembly on the pump looks perfectly fine and fitted correctly.

I'm guessing It would be the pump itself that might be finished but thought I could get some more info to clarify before I pay 300 odd pound! lol

Yes correct AK - the pin in the pump rotor locates in between any of the 'vanes' in the nylon coupling.

The only other thing I've see regarding the drive is 1) split across the coupling allowing the motor spindle to spin inside the coupling and 2) wear of the inner location flat resulting in the same.

I presume the pump rotor is free to rotate and that the motor speed is close to original rpm and not really sluggish ?

The motor does sound healthy when trying to operate the switch and doesn't sound like it's wedged or stuck. Can hear it well with the buzzing.

Just no response from roof. Only latches.

I'm beginning to fear it's the pump

Trying to think logically, all was working fine on yours before the (inevitable) pump motor failure ? You've refurbed the elec motor which now appears to be ok ?

Have to ask, you are lying the pump assembly back down on its side ie horizontal when you are testing its operation ? Not leaving it in the vertical position as you would have it to remove/replace the motor ?
