Alright folks as it states when it's cold it really crunchs when trying to get into second gear. When warm it doesn't happen. Is it a common problem? Maybe gear linkage? It's had a new clutch 6 months ogo. Thanks in advance

gearbox oil is never due a change. It's a sealed unit from the factory and there is no fluid change interval.

That said, it's not a bad idea after 100k+ to drop the box oil and change it.

it's not likely to fix your crunch though. Mine does this also for the first 1-2 changes from stone cold.

As a counter, I tend to pull away in 1st, then drop to 3rd and cruise to the end of my road. By the time I next go to grab second it slides in just fine.

By factory means car life is exactly the length of warranty. Gearbox oil is "lifetime" meaning it's not supposed to be changed during the warranty period. Althou like any oil it looses it's properties over time and becomes less effective = greater wear in transmission = profit for manufacture that sells parts.

I changed my "lifetime" sealed gearbox oil because gear changes were not smooth and i felt it was developing a grind.
Here you can see "lifetime" gearbox oil which has seen 290 000km, it had tiny bits of metal in the bottom.

Compared to fresh new oil:

I also added a Xado metal conditioner(green one) as my buddy said it fixed his gearbox grind.

After driving 1k miles gear changes are super smooth and don't get stuck like they did before + i can speedshift which was impossible before.

I would say definitely change the oil and add Xado.

Take care!

Edit: i've read from reviews that some Castrol oils perform badly in cold.

Typical old gearbox oil thickening up and making cold shifts unpleasant .

Change oil .

Life fluid :audibash:

As Karl said, also change to a poly dog bone mount. Mine was crunching constantly going into 3rd and it's fine now

Quick question for you guys I come from driving my mothers b5 a4 and gears were extremly smooth and light to change, now I know s3's are sports cars and will be heavy like steering and clutch but my gear changes make me feel Iike I'm doing a workout in traffic though I dont have a problem with sticking gears I do feel a little resistance when trying to go into gears. Is this normal and would it be worth while to open up the gearbox to inspect and maybe do a rebuild when I do a k04 build next year?

EDIT: Just hit 190k km, if that makes a difference

Cheers for the info guys definitely do a gearbox oil change ☺ what is the dog bone mount your on about? And where to find please guys. Thanks

Changed my gearbox oil at 144k miles, made a massive difference to gear change :)

Google powerflex dog bone mount bush. Yellow or red (known as the diesel one but is fine), red is meant to be less intrusive with vibrations, can't comment myself on the yellow but I have a red and have no problems with it

Could somebody post a picture of it please? Just getting a little confused lol ( don't take much) and I'm doing the gear oil 2moz, is the box filler have easy access? Don't have a pump only the litre bottles with the small filler neck. Cheers

Thanks for the link buddy. Was looking an all I could find was dogbone engine mounts. I now know this is what um looking for (apologise) thanks

Also don't surpose anyone does know if I will be able to access the filler hole on the gearbox without a pump of some kind? Cheers
