My SQ5 is due to arrive in a couple of weeks and have heard a rumour that it might come with a set of roof bars. Does anyone know if this is true? My dealer seems a bit vague.

We have had roof bars supplied FOC with both our Q5 in 2009 and SQ5 in 2013, SQ5 bars also came in a storage bag

They do come FOC with the Q5. It has a feature on it where it recognises that there are roof bars fitted, it then makes small changes to the ESP program assuming there is weight on the roof. Thats why the one location point has three holes in the roof rail as this is where a hall effect switch is located in the roof rail detects a magnet in the roof bar.
They are always coming up for sale on Fleabay, I bought some and modified them to fit my A4 Avant.

Karl.

Has anyone tried fitting Q5 roof bars to their A3/S3 Sportback with success?

Sorry can't help, we have an S3 hatchback which obviously doesn't have the rails

Anyone know the measurements between the two pins on the fittings which fit into the car rails? Ignoring the ESP pin...

I believe the rails are the same on the S3 and the Q5. If you look on Thules website and they quote the same footpack reference for both vehicles then they should fit the S3. I now own a SQ5 which came with free roofbars so my almost new (used twice) Thule aero bars and Thule footpack from my old S3 8V SB are up for grabs if anyone wants to make me a sensible offer.

It seems some of the aftermarket rails don't use the dimple locations they just grip the profile of the rail using the lip at the top to make sure they are secure.
This potentially makes them better than OE rails as you can move them back and forwards along the length of the rail. where as OE ones you have to have them fixed in one location. The rails are also different distances apart so you need to remove the one footpack and shorten an SQ5 rail to fit it on an A4 as I did.
The rails aren't even parallel on the roof so the one roof bar is slightly longer than the other.
I have measured the pin centre on an SQ5 and it's 40mm.
