As the title suggests, I'm wondering whether anybody on here drives without front number plates? Whether it be in the window or not at all and have you got into any trouble for doing so. The reason I ask this is because I see a few vehicles locally without front plates e.g. Seat leon, BMW compact. These are cars that have the appropriate mounting points for number plates so just wanted to know if anybody on here as any experience with this sort of thing as I'm considering removing mine in the future

I know people who do it. They get stopped frequently and its a 100 pound fine, every time.

Oh s**t I didn't think the police were that hot on it. Due to the number of vehicles I see consistently doing it I believed it to perhaps be a grey area that you can get away with. Guess not then

Depends on the area too.. In theory its a £100 fine on the spot. Some police officers aren't too bothered or will give you a warning the first time.

I did in my polo for 4 years, was only a £30 fine back then though so wasnt as much as a risk, never once got pulled for that reason alone though, they'd only mention it if i got pulled for something different

My little tip, keep 1 screw in the car and say the other fell out so you had to take the plate off temporarily, worked every time

Well I've got an rs style grill on my car and have chosen to leave the number plate mount off. I was just going to argue there is nowhere to put it. Might put it in the windscreen instead

I had mine in my window on my old zetec s mate, I got pulled for it and a slap on the wrist basically, I ended up sticking a vinyl reg on the bumper instead, I don't know if it was legal but the police never bothered me!

Oh that's not so bad then. I think I'll just put it in the window then and then claim it keeps falling off, I'll keep old used foam no. Plate backing to make out that I keep sticking and it keeps falling maybe

Yeah around my end they weren't to bothered, the only reason he was annoyed is because he read the plate wrong, I just left double sided tape on it and said it fell off in the bad weather, never sure if they believe you like the stick on plate looked good on the fiesta though, debating putting on on the a3

Vinyl plate on the fiesta

Doesn't look that bad actually. I'm not sure what it'd look like on the a3 I believe the part of the bumper that leads to the front of the wing is more curved on the a3 than it is on the fiesta I think

Probably mate, maybe not the look you go for on an a3 either, £100 will sting the pocket though, it's ashame you can't get the aftermarket front grills off the 8p3 on the 8p2, there much nicer! You can get the front reg delete on them, im yet to find one for the 8p2 :/

You can mate. Look at my icon or my conversion thread perhaps. Mine is an 8p2 with an rs3 style grill without the front reg bracket

I'm on my phone pal so I can't get on your pic, where did you get the grill from? Ebay job?

Gumtree but you can source them from eBay. Just type in along the lines of a3 rs grill and click on any that says 2005-2008

Be warned if you do go about and you have a private plate's that's not on display properly it can actually be taken off you and £100 fine but most will give you a warning, then fine and if you still don't fix it will fine you again and take your private number plate from your car so you go back to the manufacturer plate

I did so for a while, came back from a weekend break to find it stuck back on the front. Turns out my old man thought it fell off, and so, decided to be helpful and stick it on for me whilst I was away. :3sadwalk:

Haha! Same thing happened to me, had a smoothed grill, had some body work done on the front and the guy who resprayed the front end screwed it into my smooth grill!

I am looking for same answer.
I got RS5 style grill as well, and to be honest grill looks much better without the plate.
I don't like keeping in window nor sticking vinyl to bumper.
:(
I am using the plate on the grill though at the moment.

i personally wouldn't risk not having one on at all, Sh** that bikes can do it and we cant! they will have you for that 100% i think, it looks like your trying to hide your reg that way... avoiding average speed cameras etc

Thats a good point about bikes, so can bikes go through average speed cameras as fast as they want? (Not legally obviously, but is there a way they will be caught?)

Yeah I recon they can, non of them are rear facing, which is stupid, also face recognition would matter much on a bike

so here's my suggestion...i hate front plates too but a ticket is hardly how i want to spend my money. i would purchased an rs plate holder and place two black earth magnets on the inside of the grill. then two behind the plate holder. Its not permanent but gets the job done. It can be taken off when showing up for a get together and easily placed when on the road. I don't like the tow hook modification as a side plate does not appeal to me

No.... I drive an Audi not a Vauxhall Corsa. Come on man seriously??? Letting the side down badly with this thread!

Seriously? you want to give the police a reason to pull you over every time they see you? Even if you put it on after been warned next time there behind you there pull you to check its on !

I appreciate your opinion, but I don't understand what you mean by letting the "side" down, the majority of the "side" say that they don't like the front plate either, it was just a question, I also said it's something I'm considering rather than am doing hence why I asked the question. Everybody has a different opinion/view so just because you may not agree with it doesn't necessarily mean anybody is being let down (other than yourself)

Totally understand what your saying but putting your numberplate in your window for example, has just barry boy wrote all over it. Might as well get out the max power stickers and rocket exhausts. Its not really fitting with the class of car if you know what I mean? And dont take that as being snobby as I am far from that trust me, but can you see what I mean? Its just not something you do on an Audi. Have you considered putting in an RS3 style grill maybe? Thinking on that myself actually.

Yeah I see your point about it looking chav and whatnot, but the window is the only other place to put it if you want to stay legal (I believe it's legal) and the reason I asked this was not because I feel like removing my plates but because my car has an rs3 style grill on it already and the number plate IMO does not do it any favours. It can be appreciated much more without the number plate on it hence why a lot of people look into smaller front plates or like myself look into moving it entirely. It's not like I have an original grill with the number plate indent and want to move it, it is purely because the grill on my car is an rs3 style one it looks "cleaner" without front plates as I believe many others will agree

Like it or not it's just asking for attention from your local plod.

Seriously not worth it.

If the front number plate looks too intrusive, it might be wise to get a shorter registration, usually 3 or 4 characters.

Yeah if you have the RS grill already then the shorter numberplate would def look neater. Although Im not too sure what the legal implications of a shorter numberplate are. Most likely illegal I would think!

Such a shame we can't just run rear plates only like in U.S. It'll improve the look of a lot of cars.

Last time I drove without a number plate It was down to pretty much losing the whole front end of a BMW. Thats another story..

My grille would look entirely epic (for me at least :)) without a front plate. Oh well, we lost the tax disc so maybe at some point in the future...

Edit: on the other hand, it does a good job of hiding the crash bar/foam insert.

Yeah I think that grill would look so good without the plate and don't worry about the crash bar, if you vinyl wrap that like vinyl yellow or something against the black would set it of nicely

Could get it chromed, with some pipes on either side, make it look like an intercooler! :D

Second thought,maybe not.

My understanding is that vinyl plates do not meet the legal requirements in this area. Nor does putting your plate on the dash in the front window. The reason being that neither of these solutions is ANPR friendly. Short plates are legal provided that the spacing around the characters is standard - I've run my cars with shortened plates for a number of years now.
