**TTRS** Project 750hp

Yeah that power would take a bit of getting used to. Nothing is too fast for public roads haha, maybe very addictive when it comes to overtaking pick of stings of cars as there not even there...
Thats what I would do but I just like to be up front.

My god the way it revs. Reminds me of the Mines R34. Definitely dont want to be next to that thing in the traffic lights.

Looking good nice is done properly

I myself have bought Mario's old Blue TTRS APR Stage 3 with the GTX 30 on standard internals running 580bhp, putting meth on it not sure what route to go down next, GTX35 is too big for what i want it to do if im honest, when does it hit peak power on a 35? and when are you on full boost?

just read through the whole thread, and my god! I'm impressed with the amount of work that's gone into these 2 motors, infact, amazed!

keep up the good work, i'll be watching with great interest!! :D

haha if you still want to know ask on the FB vag tuning group there should be some boost graphs on there.

Update:

Bad news: cars back on stock valvetrain :(
Good news: it's running and driving :D

more soon

So I've had the car for a few days now and it's fast. Really really fast. Still in running in phase at the moment so can't go mad in it but looking forward to when I can.

I have read through this a fair few times now, absolutely quality - such a great read!

What a beast that must be now, you will have to let us know how you get on with it once it's run in...

UPDATE:

Ive had the car back for a while now, but been too busy enjoying it in all my spare time. Its 97 percent complete I have been busy running in the engine motorsport style and generally getting used to it. It requires one last visit for the VWR air intake to be fitted and a general final nut and bolts check, including the loading of the final map.

We did have some valvetrain issues along the way, so ive gone back to stock audi valves and springs. Therefore technically APR consider the car to be stage 3 plus and not full blown stage 4. Valvetrain is something I might revist in the future once I have the time and money to get more development work done.

So the car hasnt been dynoed, but we know roughly what power the car is making from the data logs. Its a solid 650hp 650lbft car for sure, some reckon it could even be knocking on the door of 700hp. Whatever it is, its fast, and trying to put the power down when its cold and wet is a hard task. Ive had the car spinning its wheels in 4th, and even with ESP fully on ive had a one or two fishtail occasions where the car tries to throw you off the road just going WOT in a straight line. Needless to say I keep ESP fully on in these conditions. I tried it in ESP sport once, where the TC isnt as nannying, and even a slight application of the throttle in the boost range would mean sideway action.

So before at stage 2, where you would jump in the car in pretty much any weather condition and turn the ESP into sport or OFF was possible, now it no longer is if you want to do WOT applications.

So onto how it drives. Around town, just cruising, its pretty much like OEM, if we disregard the all round stiffer engine mounts I opted for and the SMF twin plate clutch as they are obviously noisier than OEM. I think most stage 3 customers only fit the lower gearbox mount, but I wanted the whole works.

The car feels more solid and communicative because of the mounts, blip the throttle and the revs fly up in the blink of an eye due to the lighter flywheel, and you get a racecar-ish "thrum" into the cabin.

The clutch took me a day or two to get used to, but it appears the more mileage I put on the car, the more OEM it gets. You do notice the weight of the race clutch if you keep it dipped in traffic, so you soon stop doing that and make use of neutral and the handbrake instead.

MPG is in the low 40's now on the motorway at a steady 70mph. One WOT scenario will drag the average right down though. It drinks when you put your foot down. Around town Id say its around the same as with a stock turbo.

Now how does it drive like in anger? Well it kicks, really really kicks hard. The car is responsive and the spool is quick, boost doesnt really build gradually like most big turbo cars ive experienced, it well just kicks in, and the *** end squats throwing you into the back of the seat. The throw into the seat back action is so intense, that once you come off boost you and your passenger will notice that the seatbelt has tightned around your body. People who are generally known to be good passengers, turn into not so good passengers, myself included.

The car pulls hard from 3k rpm all the way to the limiter, its relentless and it doesnt die off. Spool on my motor comes in like 700rpm earlier than that of stage 3 cars without the engine work. This is down to the work of racedevelopments, and I'll post more about that at another time in greater detail.

So all in all, very happy, the car has exceeded expectations, and the fact that its quicker in the 100-200km/h dash than a aventador, macca f1, pagani zonda F (with jonnyc behind the wheel) well thats just a bonus.

I'll carry on posting, about what the car is like to live with day to day, as people never really post about that side of things, so maybe it will be of interest to some people, who have flirted with the idea of a BT but have been unsure for whatever reason to see how others are getting on.

that's a good write up Poverty, I was looking at other builds and wondered how much road time these cars get over sitting in workshops getting work done all the time or just used as second/third cars

I don't know how much time Pov's spends in the workshop, but mine is an everyday driver, and has to be reliable,as well as a sort of project.

On average it spends about 4 weeks per year on holiday down at AMDTuning, and the rest of the time being driven.

I think that most of us with cars like this want to drive them, and even if they were bought as 2nd or 3rd cars, the temptation to drive something that looks quite stealthy and drives like a much more expensive supercar is too much to resist.

It wasn't a dig as I keep upto date with your's and Pov's build as well Alex, this forum needs more build threads as its lacking comapred to others, there's a guy up this way who's not on this forum but resides on the MKV forum doing a BT build as well, black S3 I mentioned he should drop in. prefer these builds over show cars that get trailored everywhere. Sure Pov's on the MKV forum as well but i dont go on much now since my ed30 went, only for trawling for TFSI parts lol.

pov great thread mate, that acceleration and sound is great.. Good you had the patience and perseverance to keep going going BT is a pain but the results are great..

manor i know i few guys dabbling with the BT idea on the 8P side including myself , we are in the final stages but keep adding more :p, the 8L side is full of them. id would be nice to see the b7 rs4 boys do something crazy

Something crazy like this - http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/rs4-forum-b5-b7-chassis/130758-my-apr-supercharger-has-arrived.html

Everytime i look at this thread, I seriously consider looking at TTRS' or taking my current S3 BT.

You know what you need to do with the S3!

Do it properly and it will surprise you......and a lot of others.

Hmm if I can keep the car long enough then this is something I will definitely want to do.

I want an undercover pocket rocket like yours Alex!

Thanks for the kind word guys. Hopefully I will have the car back with me next week sometime after the latest round of upgrades. The car should be getting dyno'd also so should have some final figures.

Nice looking coilovers man!!

I didnt realise it was you i was following on Instagram -> Sonnyj1 with the 106 Rallye Turbo.

Good read! Awesome car I would love one of these in a few years when I am old enough to insure one!

Do you use this car as a daily? Or just a project car??

Ninja thread bump. Any updates to this build eg dyno numbers?

I then looked at the intercooler. The stock intercooler is tiny so I fitted a forge motorsport unit. I got it fitted at Forge HQ, got a chance to meet the big boss Peter who is a really nice guy and really enthusiastic about his products which was nice to see.

However we then came across a THS intercooler for free, and we were wondering what we could do with it. So, we decided to cram it behind the roadsters engine bay somehow!

And so this is what we came up with. Removed the air conditioning rad, attempted to remove the A/C pump aswell, but thats required due to the way the belts run on the engine. For it to fit we also had to cut the crash bar.

IMG00180-20110902-1632-1.jpg

End results via logging shows that temps are even cooler, and will peak at a certain temp and not increase anymore, but if you ask me whether its worth massacaring your TTRS for the small gain over the forge unit, I would say no. Therefore the coupe wont be going this route, and it did highlight actually how well the forge unit is actually designed, as the temps differences were minimal!

I was just about to question the suitability of that Forge unit for your 750hp motor. You say that the change to your THS wasn't worth it? But at the time your engine was around 400hp? Given your end goal of 750hp I would argue that the change was more than worth it.

I recently saw someone on here post a rule of thumb regarding intercooler sizing for horsepower goals; for every 100hp of charged air 3litres of intercooler volume is required. Going by that rule of thumb that Forge unit, 12.6litres, is good for 420hp; woefully short of your "Project 750hp" goal

all that said I don't know the dimensions of that THS unit, the front surface area is obviously much bigger which has got to help; cant see its depth though.

How do you find driving with the superfinished transmission? Worth the effort and cost, BTW as a ballpark figure how much did that cost?

Erm I have a van as daily, the TT is just used on weekends, and driving to the gym and back.

Yeah im running the APR intercooler now, it will do over 750hp

So an update:

The good the bad and the ugly.

The bad:

Syncro failed in 3 gearboxes.
Spare gearbox casing broke at the mounts :O
Injector 5 failed, replaced all 5
Melted wiring loom - replaced

The Good:

Did two ring trips
Stronger syncro being developed
Added more heat protection for cabling and pipework
Car is still stupidly quick

Pictures and videos of what ive been up to on my instagram

http://instagram.com/jason_rs

Now pressing on with more upgrades, should gain me some speed, even better driveability and gearbox reliability. Aim is to have it all done by august as I plan to return to the nurburgring in that month.

forgive me, you may already have mentioned it; have you added an LSD front and back?

Following on instagram. Just amazing!

Right lets try a meaningful update here.

May 2014 I went to the ring, and whilst in stop start traffic in belgium, the syncromesh went in 1st and 2nd gear. ******. Still made it to the ring and back though.

Got back to england, bought a 2nd hand gearbox and fitted that.

Fast forward to April 15' and the car develops a suspension knock. Into AMD it goes and they find that one of the bilstein dampers is weeping. Off it goes to bilstein who repaired it free of charge and back onto the car.

I pick the car up and 2 mins down the road from AMD and injector 5 fails. Get towed back to AmD and replace all 5 injectors.

I then fit dunlop sportmaxx race tyres, which then start rubbing on the outside arches/paintwork. Seems that they are fair bit wider than the michelin supersports that they replaced. Aggro! They would probably fit fine if it wasnt for the 10mm spacers I have to run to clear the 8 pots.

Solution? Wide Arches. Pics in the links
evilgrin.gif

I also fitted a boost gauge, need little mod, has the needle sweep, black face when the car is off, and fits perfectly into the air vent.

Then next on the list is further weight reduction. I had the car weighed when stock with nothing but a full milltek exhaust system at 1450kg with a quarter tank. Since then ive done the pole positions, titanium exhaust, rear seat removal and a lightweight battery will be on the way.
I estimate with all of these things the car probably weighs about 1365kg with a quarter tank.

The rear seat is still a work in progress, im going to have a setup similiar to that of the special edition mk1 audi tt quattro sport. Should look cool once the parts arrive and I can get it fabricated.

Also awaiting my APR mobile dongle, so I can easily communicate with APR Hq in the states, as they are making me a custom map. Flames have been requested

Then I also have these. Currently for sale, but I keep thinking I should put them on my car....

Carbon Ceramic goodness

And finally my spare gearset is at a racing transmission specialist who is going to develop some stronger syncro mesh to stop this from constantly happening:

And so ladies and gentlemen this is what shall be keeping me occupied for the next few weeks, the aim is to get everything done by august, as Im returning to germany.

Update time:

Gearbox wasnt fixed, still waiting on stronger syncros.

In the meantime, ive bought some new mods and will be going for more power.

Sach clutch and uprated pressure plate. Will be mating it with a stock dual mass flywhee.

Then I bought some wide arches and had the body shop prep, paint and fit.

The fitment from the factory was poor and it took the bodyshop a hell of alot of work to get them fitting right without panel gaps. They did a great job and I love them.

Im not into visual mods everythings about performance for and with the wide arches that was no different.

The dunlop sportmaxx race tyres where rubbing on the oem front wings so this was my solution. Its not OTT and even some audi owners dont notice the wider wings until pointed out. Perfect.

Now to the more power bits.

Valvetrain ordered and the engines coming back out to get sent to race developments.

Also ordered schrick cams :D

Gtx3576 with the .63 housing is makinf way for a gtx3582 witb a .83 housing.

Then the supporting mods like intake fuel pump exhaust etc will all be getting looked at.

Im going to the nurburgring on the 4th of may so it all needs to be done by then.

Pressure!

More pics of the car with the wide arches please. They look OEM which is awesome.
