As per usual the suspension on my car won't just be quiet. I have a creak or binding sound when steering left or right. At first it would only do it when the car had been driven for a long time or the weather was hot. So definitely heat related. Now though, it's started doing it almost straight away when driving it. Also, it started on the offside and now the nearside is doing it.

So far in the last couple of months:
- Stripped and rebuilt the top mounts with new bearings
- Replaced both driveshafts with new OEM
- Replaced both balljoints with TRW (OEM brand)

About 12 months ago I did a mini front end refresh with:
- New OEM drop links
- New SuperPro ARB bushes
- New TyrolSport solid rack mount
- New TyrolSport solid subframe mounts
- H&R Clubsports rebuilt

It has Ground Control top mounts, which are effectively new now.

I did notice yesterday the power steering fluid is low so I'm going to pick some OEM stuff up tomorrow from VW but not sure low fluid would cause that sort of noise would it? I only checked because it started whining on full lock. A bit of a worry the fluid is going somewhere. I've not noticed any drips that said.

Next step is to get the mrs to sit in the car and wobble the wheel while I try and find the source. When I did it last time, it didn't seem to be the top mounts.

I had the same issue and went down the thought train of suspension or arb related. After testing my suspension I found it to be ok. I changed the arb on spec for an R32 front and rear thinking it was the bush clips allowing movement of the bar. The problem still remained!!

After a lot more digging I found that it was the power steering motor that was causing the noise due to low fluid, as I had a leak from the motor seal. On topping up the fluid its never returned.

It's always the things you would never suspect!

Ah cheers for the reply!

Yeah I was hoping it would be something simple. I grabbed some OE fluid and topped up as it was a little low but it made no difference unfortunately. I'm thinking it has to be something with the top mounts. I'm going to strip them and re-grease them when I get some time with white lithium grease. Hopefully that cures it.

My budget coilovers creak like a bitch, started a week after fitting with new top mounts.. Think I need an air gun on my topnuts myself, are you on coilovers?

I had this - turned out to be excessive lateral play in the shock push rods - new shocks and problem was fixed. You've recently had your shocks rebuilt?

Yep, rebuilt coilovers as above. Perhaps the guys doing it did a sub standard job but they're very well regarded in the area and targa competitions.

I had suspected that originally but as they've been rebuilt recently then I'm swaying to the top mounts again. I've been meaning to take them off and re-grease them yet again :(
