***** RTR ***** (REPORT THE RATTLE)

What if the weak point in Audi's argument turns out to be their saviour and they decide to stick to their guns and say that the rattle is the noise this engine should make.. making those without it the odd ones out?..

:think::think::think::think::think::think::think:.......................and then Audi will recall all S3's without the rattle and make them rattle:indecisiveness:!!!!!! LMAO :wtf:

If this happens ......... please accept my apologise :undwech:................:tumble:

Honestly if that happens I will eat my S3 :icon thumright: .......and the fact they have suggested doing the recording test means they feel that this will resolve my concerns when I hear it on another S3. So when I/they (Hopefully) do not hear it on another S3 I will be able to continue my case.

Just the way my mind works sometimes.. sounds weird thinking back but it is crazy enough for that to happen?..

They say the ones without the rattle have been fortunate enough to get a car without it but within the manufacturing tolerances this rattle is acceptable!? :audibash::uhm:

No its good ......this may be how they play it and thinking about it now gives me time to come up with a counter argument.

If they say its down to the tolerances and acceptable then I will ask:

Why this wasn't your first response?
Why did you first try to argue it was present on all examples of the car/engine?
Surely with the extensive tests that the engine goes through prior to being released for use in consumer cars this would have been picked up?
How can 2 engines built in possibly the same batch have extremely noticeable different characteristics?
So your saying Audi's build quality ethic is "Pot luck" ...?

Just a few ideas off the top of my head ......

Mine is booked in at Amersham Audi to be tested but not until 15th May. The tech said he wasn't aware of this but would happily take a look and said if there is something wrong it will be covered under warranty so I have nothing to worry about!! We'll see what they say.

@David83S3 and @Andyescos Goodluck on Monday :)

Changed to tomorrow now. Looking forward to hearing an S3 with no rattle :) Good luck with your check up but i can pretty much guarantee that they will give you the same response as the rest of us on here.

So met up with Andy and cannot hear the rattle on his car. it might be there extremely faintly ......but its defo nowhere near as noisy as mine. Will be booking them in for recording by techs ASAP!

On a side note .....Andy also showed me launch control .....and WOW! Ive not felt the acceleration from the S3 like that before ....was like being on rita at Alton towers lol.

Also the mag ride was mighty impressive too .....going from that to mine on the same stretch of road was very noticeable.

Big thanks to Andy :)

*** UPDATE ***

I sent this >>

Good Morning Emmanuel
I hope you had a good bank holiday break.
I have managed to find a fellow S3 owner that is willing to provide their car/time to measure engine noise compared to mine. I met with him on Saturday and have listened to his cabin noise. The rattle noise coming from my car is 100% not present on his car and I can hear this even without noise level equipment.

I assume now you will liaise with Northampton Audi to get both cars booked in to be measured by the technicians? We will need to get this arranged fairly promptly please as my friends car is due to be returned by the end of may as it has been rejected for various reasons.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards
David Northen

Chased today for response and got this >>

Good morning Mr Northern

I am in contact with the Northampton dealership and currently awaiting confirmation of a booking. I will of course inform you as soon as this has been arranged.

Kindest regards

Emmanuel Poku

Mine's being returned to Audi on Saturday 30th May, so Northampton will have mine from then if they can't get us in any earlier.

Will be checking the replacement car for rattles!!

Will let you know as soon as I know @Andyescos ...... Knowing Audi Northampton it will be about a 2 week wait for a booking. Your car being there from the 30th might help :thumbs up:

Hopefully you are lucky with the rattle on your second S3 too :yahoo: ...it does seem to be very pot luck who has or has not got it.....

My S3 is going in for the 18month health check next week.

Had a call from Whetstone Audi to confirm the booking (I'd used the online booking tool), and was asked if there was anything I wanted to raise as a concern.

Mentioned I'd got the rattle that (almost) everyone else had & how the forums were talking about it.

In the words of the service advisor, 'just because you've got a rattle, doesn't mean it's the same rattle as everybody else on the forums'!
As a result, they are going to take a look at it when I take it in. Hopefully the technician will have cleaned his ears out in readiness...

So we'll see what happens.

David, that it the identical sound I've got. I'll try to make a video tonight.

Hi Ric,

I can hear, well i think i can hear a very slight flutter of what can be described as a faint rattel upon accerlation, more noticably in higher gears aroun 1800-3000 rpm, is this similar to your's and @David83S3, why cannot the rattle be heard when applying throttle with the car stationary and any chance of another longer video with the rattle from either yourself or David?

regards

Will try over the weekend .....but it is difficult to capture with a mobile phone as the road noise over powers the rattle noise. Will see what I can capture !!!! :thumbs up:

Found some vids on YouTube with wastegate rod rattles from vw models. Is the same? Why does your car have to be in motion and is there a fix?

Lou, sorry I have not had a chance to get my go pro sorted. Sitting waiting on my car at garage now. The tech could barely hear it and said it was the turbo spooling noise.. on our way back to the dealer tho and going around roundabout he was in a higher gear and said "oh..you mean that noise". Lol. But he said there is not much chance of it being anything other than the rattle and no fix. Least it is documented. ;')

Yours sounds as faint as mine. So what's your position now then Andy? Not as unfortunate as David to leave it?

There is a sound file in an other thread ! I made a spectral analysis on it and it show the rattle frequency clearly....

***** UPDATE *****

@Andyescos is getting a TTS for the day !!! LOL

So tomorrow Andy will drop his S3 off at Northampton Audi (and be given a brand new TTS :thumbs up:) and I will be going in at 2pm with mine to do a back to back test dive of both cars along with a head tech and manager at the dealership. Hopeful outcome is that they experience first hand the rattle in mine and non rattle in Andy's ....after this ....I have no idea ??? ...but at least I will have proved that the rattle is not a standard noise of the car/engine so therefore must be a fault with mine.

Can they actually fix it?

Will they just say its an acceptable tolerance?

Who knows .....

Auid Folks should keep reporting this though ...the more noise on this matter within Audi the better :thumbs up:

A little, but not as bad as yours. :(:(

I wonder if their new 2.0 TFSI engine is better designed (No rattle) I just don't get how a premium brand like Audi could allow such a "Shody" mechanical element to exist in their engines ... ..... Maybe they couldn't get the performance from the engine along with the economy without the rattling component? Gaw'd knows .... (I'm no mechanic)

I am pretty sure Northampton Audi will have a picture of me behind the reception soon saying "Do not allow entry" :jester:

Morning all.

An update for you - good & bad news.

The good:
I took the Master Tech out for a drive and was able to repeatedly re-create the rattle.
He clearly heard it and wrote down on the job sheet 'Buzzing noise between 1800 & 3000 rpm - see <name> for details."
He was going to take a look under the bonnet when we got back to the garage, but decided it was a bit too hot in there to start poking at things!

The bad:
They can't look into it today.
Seems they don't do diagnostic work on a Friday. The service desk mentioned something about the servers being taken off-line on Fridays.

They were apologetic and stated that as I had mentioned the rattle on the booking confirmation call - that should have triggered them to make sure it didn't come in on a Friday.

So it's got to go back - Monday.

I should probably expect a similar result today then  ....Good to hear somebody else is following this up with Audi :thumbs up:

Not even got in the cars yet and already being told "Its a characteristic of the car"

I can see where this is going .....

So mine finally went into the dealers today. I took the master tech out for a drive to replicate the rattle and he heard from the moment I pulled out of the dealership. Ahh, good news I thought!!

We drove around for 10 mins and he said it is the same problem with the turbo wastegate rod rattling and pulsating, then told me about the clip fix on other engines. He then said that I am "lucky" as it is not half as bad as on the smaller 1.2 and 1.4 engines.

When we got back to the dealer, he went out back and came back with a Tech Bulletin from Audi which said "Engine rattle, vibrating or whiring noise coming from the turbo wastegate is caused by pulsation and is characteristic of the car. No fix or repair available. Not a job that can be carried out under warranty" These are not the exact words but close to. Stupidly I left my job sheet there!!

Anyway, different day, Same BS!! At least my dealer has record of it. Now I will push harder on Audi UK who had claimed that they were unaware of this issue and hadn't received any complaints of this nature, which I know is BS.

The saga continues....

I arrived and straight away was told by the manager dealing with me that all 5 S3's he has owned have all had a strange rattling noise on them. He actually complained about it on the first one ...but was told its normal so he just got used to it. So .....firstly we went out in my car .....me ....the manager ....and the Technician. Wouldnt you ****** know it .....as my car was warm from travelling to the dealer it wasnt making the noise particularly loudly?!?! ....It was making it though and they could hear it. After 10mins we went back and swapped cars into a cold sepang SB - Manual. Straight away it was noticeable that there was little or no rattle .....and the 2 Audi guys agreed even compared to my low noise rattle. We were all throwing ideas around of what the cause could be .......but they both agreed it wasnt what you expect to hear from this calibre of car and also said it might need a fair bit of noise making with Audi before they do anything about it ....To be fair to both Audi guys ....they were both genuine ....helpful ....and quite sympathetic / understanding. We actually didnt even go out in Andys car as we didnt really need to after this .......if the rattle was there or not ......what difference would it have made to the outcome. (Big thanks to Andyesco.....hope you enjoyed the TTS).

So .....what next .......I have asked that they listen to my car from cold so are going to take it off me next week and give me his old S3 in porche grey which he says has an awful rattle on it. Before giving me this grey S3 the tech guy is going to have a good look over it to establish what the rattle is (even though we all know what it is). By looking at the grey S3 it means they can rip it apart without too much care. Really not sure what will come next ........

I think it might be time to join forces and make a large joint complaint. I will be going back to Emmanuel at Audi head office to state I am still not happy that car sounds the way it does.

Oh ....also .....forgot to say .....the head tech is going to log an official complaint with Audi detailing what i have said. .....but I guess they probably do this with all complaints.
