8V S3 Tuning Thread

400bhp is looking to be very achievable with an intake, turbo-back exhaust (inc. downpipe) and a proper ECU map.

That'll do me fine! I don't need any more than this.

Famous last words....

I have to agree......

I thought stock power would be enough when I bought my car, then I said I'd stop at maybe 330 or 360bhp at the absolute most.....

That didn't happen.

Protect your business by identifying chip-tuned vehicles

05 March 2015

Updated - Make sure your service advisors and technicians check for modifications

AU0173-12
Feedback from DISS reports indicates that our networks are seeing more vehicles that have had non-approved power-enhancing modifications made to them by customers (often called ‘chip tuning’).

Make sure your service advisors and technicians check for modifications before starting any work or repairs.

Warranty policy

The warranty policy guide states that vehicle modifications are not condoned and may result in the vehicle’s warranty on parts related to these enhancements being compromised or revoked.

Section one of the warranty policy guide states:

Our products are sometimes subjected to modifications by their owners. When assessing a warranty claim, it must be carefully ascertained whether, from the technical viewpoint, a connection exists between the modification and the damage. For example, a claim regarding the paintwork cannot be rejected because the vehicle concerned has been fitted with a more powerful engine.

Warranty code indicates if vehicle has been modified

The Group Factories have programmed their service systems to indicate if a vehicle has been tuned or modified. Warranty code ‘TD1’ will appear against the vehicle if it has been modified.

This code is identified whenever a request is sent to the software version management database from the vehicle, encrypted data from the engine ECU is sent in with the request which can be used to determine if the engine control unit mapping has been modified – TD1 is displayed in the Elsa system within 10 seconds.

When you should check for this code

When booking a service: We recommend service advisors check for code TD1 in ElsaPro when booking vehicles in for services (part of the Service Core Process) so your business does not submit warranty or goodwill claims that are later rejected.

Before starting any repairs: We recommend that, when the vehicle is connected to diagnostic equipment, the technician also checks ElsaPro for this code before carrying out any repairs, in case the code hasn’t been identified by the service reception.

To do this, you can:

  • Complete initial GFF with online connection established. Check the software level online via the specified/actual comparison function to identify possible engine chip tuning (TD1) and make sure the online auto upload correctly concludes
The service systems are updated within 10 seconds of the VAS machine communicating with the Factory servers, so there will be a short delay in the checking process.

What to do if the code appears against a vehicle

If code TD1 appears in the vehicle’s records, you must ask the customer what modifications have been made to the vehicle. You should also warn the customer that any repairs required might not be covered by the manufacturer if the diagnosed defect is related to the modification.

How to use service systems to check for code TD1

Guided fault finding (GFF) – checking vehicle software:

  • Specified/actual comparison
  • Problem-related update
  • Code for vehicle modification
You only need to check current software for the TD1 code to log, if applicable.

Q&A

Q. The TD1 code is displayed, but the customer says that no performance enhancements have been made to his/her vehicle. How can you check what has been modified?
A.
Only the manufacturer can check if the car has been modified. To do this, the control unit would have to be removed and sent to the manufacturer for testing. This process could take several weeks, and the customer would be charged for the cost of the testing. This cost could not be claimed under warranty or as goodwill.

Q. Can the TD1 code be reversed?
A.
Yes. If an approved software update is detected and applied during the diagnosis process, the TD1 code will be removed from our service systems.

Q. If the vehicle has not been online to the SVM database before but an online log has been sent, will this be enough to initiate the TD1 code?
A.
No. The encrypted data can only be sent to SVM using the process stated above. The online diagnostic protocol is not part of this identification process.

Q. Is the TD1 code sent to the 5051 tester?
A.
No. Currently, there is no message on the diagnostic machine to indicate that the ECU mapping has been altered. It must be checked as stated in the bulletin (Elsa/SAGA2).

Q. Will the data be sent as part of an online key adaption, or other immobiliser work, related to the engine ECU?
A.
No. The FAZIT database for online immobiliser adaption has no affect on this process. Only the software version management database can decrypt the data sent by the ECU.

This is really useful, particularly as it answers the question about whether a TD1 can be removed / reversed in certain circumstances. Thanks, much appreciated:icon thumright::icon thumright:

I love the fact that if a td1 is displayed but you've made no changes they will charge you for testing

My question there would be that I'd want paying back as they would have made assumptions and charged me for that, think a solicitor would get you your money back there

It wouldn't be assumptions now, would it, if it blatantly displayed a TD1 :p

The only situation this would occur, is if you bought a used Audi, took it in, it displayed a TD1, you then say you haven't modified it (but the previous owner did). Then an argument about liability would start.

If a TD1 is flagged, the software/firmware has changed. No ifs no buts.
*You* may not have changed it, but someone *did* ;)

Hello,
I wan't to buy a milltek(probably, any better options price, looks?) resonated version but i hardly cannot find pics(on the car)of the differend end tips( quad oval or the round sharp ones?wich color?titanium, black, polished?
i think the oval ones looks the most like the originals, any ideas?

APR stage 1 now available, with the official release later this week. I saw this one the dyno at Ecotune in Glasgow this morning, the numbers look very healthy indeed, car low mileage, so still to loosen up a bit.

That's at the crank right? No way its putting our those numbers at the wheels on a stage 1 tune.

I think that these are the BHP numbers APR usually use on their marketing material. I wonder who will bite the bullet and go for it?

The dyno plot looks great, good figures APR.

Nobody?
Pics of the round milltec endtips are easy too find but none of the milltec oval quad tips.
The oval ones are 104-80mm,looks bigger than oem I think

Hi Forbzeeee, these are actual numbers, run yesterday in Glasgow. I've driven it, and Jes@s it's quick! Torque is fantastic, pulls really well, outstanding shove in the back.

Can highly recommend :D:p

I've tried looking previously, you can find the black ovals on a couple of golf Rs on YouTube, but I couldn't find any on an S3 ;)

Hi, has anyone fitted audi r8 brakes to theyre new s3? I have a chance to buy a full r8 kit but i'm no sure if they will fit?

Any help on this would be great

I'm happy to post pictures of my gt1000 round mat black tips, though it is hard to get a picture where you can see them properly haha.

Bare in mind that the titanium tips are £475 extra

Edit: from what I'm told the oval tips don't seem to be very popular, the circle ones however make the rear look very mean indeed. Depends on the look your going for I guess

Can't wait! Getting APR Stage 1 this Friday.....already installed the APR turbo muffler delete and carbon air intake....plus I also (mistakenly) changed my diverter valve to a cast alloy GoFast Bits one without first checking that it was for the 8P...d'oh! Anyway, my mechanic got it to fit - bit tough - and I contacted GFB in Australia to see if it would be ok (sent pics).....they were fantastic at getting back to me....the Chief Engineer said they had had trouble getting one to fit on the 8V, but said if I managed it with no problems then leave it on, which I have....and fingers crossed, no problems in quite a few weeks. A new one for the 8V is being designed and made as I type this which I will most probably get to make sure its all ok. Anyway, point of all this was to say that I have noticed a nice difference with these 3 mods....more and longer lasting surge from the turbo, and a bit more aggressive sound. So I think I'm ready for the APR Stage 1 as I have heard plenty of good things about it.....maybe downpipe in a few months, or when the Stage 2 map comes out as they come as a package deal....

@PanamaS3 sounds good ! Be nice to hear what you think after its done!
absolutely and will do mate...unfortunately can't get better than 95 RON on the pumps here, but they sell additives which I might try....unless anyone here knows of any ill side effects in using those...?

Stage 1 with apr intake 99 ron tesco fuel
11154876 10155444419790167 3688860673120758992 o

321/313 seems a bit high for standard power? Still good gains though.

550nm (406ft-lbs) seems high !

No intake upgrade?
No Downpipe upgrade?

It seems almost impossible

At 550nm DSG should slip without a DSG tune

Look at my specs and dyno results. And i go to the best VAG tuner in NL.

Dear All - I value all of your opinions greatly....and have woken up today....again...with the "tuning chip conundrum"....am I making a mistake going with the APR Stage 1 instead of the MTM cantronic box....?
I understood from previous threads on this subject that at the end of the day, whatever you go with, Audi's new diagnostics will show changes with either that could void your warranty...if that's the case, then there's a big saving in cost going the APR route. I am going to go to my dealer and speak with the chief maintenance guy to get an opinion from him also, as I understand from other owners here that the dealership is very tolerant of these mods. Thanks in advance for a) putting my mind at rest, or b) confusing me further :)
Cheers!

its has an apr intake on it if you read it correct above the photo

indeed all dynos are different, its more important to see the before and after.

A water/methanol system will sort that out for you.....

Anyone familiar with driver motorsport?

A friend of mine got 422 hp and 436 ft-lbs of torque at crank with their stage 2 tune.

It costs 700$ should I go for it?

just got back from having Stage 1 APR installed. took the car for a few spins around the block and did launch control twice. wow....what a difference....and would have been even greater if I didn't already have the APR intake on. big shove in the back and big giggles....but still drives normally with no difference than before when being conservative. my mechanic said that in a day the car will learn the new set up and it will be even quicker tomorrow. I'm on a single programme set to high on 95 RON....highly recommend it.
i hear the APR downpipe is out soon which I'm going to get also....just researching dampers now to try to correct some/all of the "bounce"....or might go all in on a coilover set but not sure its needed.
happy days :)
