Are Audi's known for using a lot of oil?

The reason I ask, I was cruising down the motorway and "ping" the dashboard lit up warning me to check the oil levels.
I pulled up further down the road and checked. Safe to say the dipstick was pretty low down on the oil line. Rummaged around in the boot and found the oil that comes with the car. It took the whole damn bottle to get it back to the right levels.

My car is a year and three months old with 10,500 miles on the clock, I've had lots of brand new cars and never had to add oil so soon into it's life. Is this normal or should I dig deeper and look for a fault?

It'll defo be something Im keeping my eye on more often!

Thanks

My experience is they drink a little (half a litre in my 1.4) in the first 10,000 miles, seems to settle down after that. I believe it's well known, hence they give you the top-up oil in the boot.

Don't quote me on it but it should say in the manual what the expected oil consumption is, I couldn't tell u what it is for your car let alone mine as I haven't looked myself but I would think that most cars within similar engines and performance will have a similar oil consumption rate, my last car (vauxhall) did exactly what the manual said which was 1litre per 10,000 miles, so what you have said doesn't really sound abnormal. All depends how you drive to be fair.

Yes.

It does vary from engine to engine, and how you've run it in
(How did you run it in, out of interest)

But on the whole, yes, it will drink the stuff until around say 15k miles

Just be thankful you haven't got the dreaded CAEB engine......
http://www.classactionsnews.com/set...ssive-oil-consumption-class-action-settlement

The U.S. have opened a class action for claims, but UK customers are having to fork out of their own pocket unless their oil consumption meets a very specific criteria. No similar class action in the UK.

Thanks guys! Good to know. I went very easy on the engine for the first 1000 miles, not once went over 50 and allowed to warm up. 1.4 cod by the way.

It's life since then involves a good half hour a day (weekdays) sat in stop start traffic, followed my some spirited driving in the evenings and weekends.

Thinking about it, all my previous cars have had their first service by now which would've included an oil change, but my service counter still wants me to wait another 8000 miles. Bizarre logic

Was going to ask when you were due for an oil change.

In my previous car, a 2011 1.4 TFSI A1 that I owned from new, I had the oil interim service light come on at around 14,000 if I remember correctly. Did have to top it up myself at around 9,500 miles, used about a third of the supplied bottle. Seemed to drink a lot less after the oil change at 14K, level barely changed through to about 25K, a few months before I got rid of the car it got another top up.

My current S3 is a lot more thirsty! Drank 50% by the time I had my oil change at 8,000 miles. Then proceeded to drink 70% between then and a 'health check' appointment at 14K. Of course I topped it up when needed, figures worked out from how much I had to replace. Dealer said it should be a lot better now but will always be quite thirsty!

1.4 COD? I'll keep my eye on this in that case! Mines only got 2.4k so far, haven't noticed any consumption as of yet. I rarely drive mine in all honesty, it's a weekend + holiday car :p

One thing I will say, when my dealer told me my oil service is due in either 2 years or 19k miles I thought to myself heck no, i'm going to be servicing it this December which will be 1 year i've had it, it'll probably only have 5k miles but I like to keep it maintained, not only that they can check for ECU updates.

Question: Is yours manual or S-tronic - and do you notice any 2 cyl vibrations/jolts?

Mines a manual, but I haven't felt any vibrations at all, it just feels like driving a normal car to be honest. Mines booked in for its health check the end of the month. Other than software updates, I can't see them picking up on anything. Mines a 14 plate by the way.

14 plate 1.4 COD here too. I had to put 1 /2 a litre in at 6000 miles, which surprised me. On reflection, I realised that for the previous 8 years my annual mileage had been 5000, so in all that time I had never had to top up the oil.

When the current mileage got to 8000, message came up "oil change due in 900 miles" and that is where I am at the moment. 1st oil change at 9000 miles seems reasonable to me.

I don't notice any transition from 4 to 2 cylinder mode by the way.

I had a 1.4 A1, 185 version and it went through more oil then petrol!! lol kidding but in 22k miles I topped up approx 8/10 litres and had service/oil change in between. Was bad but garage said it was normal?. Being the dual charged system this warranted the extra consumption apparently.

My S3 is nowhere near as bad and since I bought it in December have only topped up once! :)

How much oil was in your cars when you got them?

Mine was exactly mid way between min/max which Im sure is the ideal, however, in most new cars Ive had over the past few years, they have always been at the max mark.

- apart from my m135i which doesnt have a dipstick! The electronic oil level indicator never showed the same level twice!

+1

Same here, just over a litre in first year (11,000 miles) then settled down on my 2.0 TDI. Going in for first oil change in a couple of weeks and not added any oil in the last 4-5 months and check every 1-2 months

Had to top mine up for the first time last week when the warning symbol lit up in my dash.. yeah I know I should have checked it, but hey... my S3 has now covered just over 19,000 miles since June last year, so impressed with that kind of consumption.

My 2014 1.4 COD has used a litre of oil over the last 12 months and 10,000 miles, so I've just emptied the free bottle of oil that was supplied with the car when new.

You got your S3 on the long life service interval ?

Opting for the standard annual/9000 mile service interval on mine even though I average around 11,000 miles per year

Yes, long life service schedule as I do around 20k a year. It's booked into for it's first inspection service next Monday actually.

I also have the Oil change in 500 miles displayed on the DIS. Does it just need booked in for an oil change or am I as well just booking it in for its first service?

It will have done 13000 miles.

Maybe not so bad as I am guessing you do a lot of motorway miles to chalk up 20k a year.

Personally I feel more comfortable with more frequent service interval for a high performance engine

@RYuill Mine is in on Friday for 1st Oil Change. I asked about 1st service too and they said not required or words to that effect. On MMI the 1st service isn't due for another 8k or something so will just leave it. I am on 14k miles.

Depends on how you have been driving the car and in what conditions and what service regime it is set to.
You can check how many miles to service via the MMI

I reckon you two guys are on the wrong service schedule. If you do under 10K miles / annum you should have annual service.

Not noticed particularly high oil consumption (but I've not checked it lately either).

My old A4 B8 2.0TDI (2010) got through a litre of oil around the 17,000 miles mark. As I rack up 25,000 miles a year it always seemed to happen just before the service warning message came up!

Quick question how do you check oil on s3 No on my s1 engine has to be warm so I never can work out best way to check it. Was much easier when just cold on flat surface!! Is s3 same warm engine if so how warm ?

Very early days but just ticked over 1000 miles in my S3 and oil is still firmly on max. No consumption yet!

I'm always amazed that at considerable miles owners havent checked their oil level. Read the manual and it will tell you how often youre supposed to conduct various checks.
Waiting for the light to come on isnt doing any one any good. I wonder if people wait until their tyres are flat before checking pressures or until the MOT station tells them they have bald tyres?

I check mine every few weeks. So far have not had to top up between services, that said I'm only averaging around 5k miles per year at the moment and the car is on the time / distance service regime.

Mine's about 5500 miles since last service and the oil is at 2/3rds of the way down the dipstick. So not using much really.

When I collected mine, I was told either 2 years or 19k miles. I just thought well it'd reach 2 years before 19k definitely, they've put me on the long life as standard. Not sure why, but it's better oil anyway so not much of a loss, but I guess you pay more for it when it comes to service!

As for me talking about no oil consumption, I stand corrected. I checked yesterday and it has gone down slightly, my car has 2.4k miles. Have to top it up sometime I guess

Just to reply to my original comment, yes mine has drank oil.

Was delivered with 3/4 on the dipstick at 1 mile on the odo now with 2.7k it's on nearly 1/4!

Just topped it up with 100ml of oil that was supplied. I'm shocked that when it had 2.4k it was on half, and it had lowered considerably in 300 mile. Saying that, I did give it a booting as I had my mate with me one evening who hadn't been in it since I was running it in. So I did have it in dynamic and drove like a prat the odd time, I must've loosened it up more haha. Not often I Rev it.

MPG is pretty impressive, if I thrash it I get 33mpg, if I drive normally I get 46mpg. Haven't done a long run nursing the throttle so far I wonder what it could do

Anyway, good job I checked it as I'm going on a track day at the weekend just for a bit of fun, it's also for charity, there's going to be an R8 coming too which would be good! I'll get some pics - so thought I had best see if my oil was ok and it probably was a good idea to top it up.

In contrast I rev mine all the time (it hits 6k almost every day) and it doesn't use much oil, I think cars need a good revving to keep them running right.

I have some oil from December 2013 would it still be ok to use ???

Just seen that Audi are on Watchdog next week about the 1.8 tfsi I think and its oil consumption

Well 6400 in and it's saying oil is on minimum...I can count on one hand how many times I have driven "hard" and even the way I define hard isn't much use on the car at all.

Annoyed.
