I will be getting my car with 18 inch wheels and was wondering what tyres come with the car.

Is it continental or can it be michelin for example and what model of tyre is possible?

Most seem to have continental sport contact 5. That I've seen.

Another thing: Can one fit 17 inch wheels from the A3 on the S3?

The only reason I ask is because where I live, the roads are really bad and smaller diameter rims fare much better in potholes and bad surfaces.

The outside tyre circumference is the same for whatever size of wheel you have, isn't it?

you can fit 17's if you want to, no ones stopping you. may mock and berate, but not stop lol.

I believe in function over form so if 17 inch wheels will make the car more comfortable and less prone to sidewall bulges upon pothole impact then I will fit them even if they don't look the part.

It's a small sacrifice if you ask me.

What do you mean?

The tyre diameter will stay the same no matter what size the rim is since you compensate for the reduction in rim size by increasing the thickness of the tyre's sidewall.

My S3 came with continental sport contact 5's but when a friend of mine ordered his A4 avant he asked for a set of pirelli winter tyres to be fitted (he collected it in December), the dealer said yeah no problem, the tyres he wanted were on when he collected and he payed nothing extra! Not sure if it's common for the dealer to be open to changing tyres, but I guess it's worth asking if other people have successfully done it.

Sportcontact 5 it is then. Seems to be the tyre all S3's come standard with.

Does anyone know if the front and rear tyre sizes are the same. What are they any way?

Mine are the same front and back, 225,40r,18y

Will 17" wheels clear the brake callipers?

They're not bad tyres, obviously there will be tyres that have more grip out there, my only issue with them is they don't seem to last as long as other premium tyres, well I say that but could be different on this car, had them on my last car and was disappointed with how quickly they wore out!

40% of the width is sidewall? That seems pretty poor to me.

I hope the 18 inch rims will not cause problems on the poor roads I drive on.

I can't find the thread but there is a quite recent thread on here somewhere with an S3 wearing a set of 17" wheels. So yeah u can fit them, can't tell u the complete size reference without finding the thread though sorry.

buy a premium brand car, and a premium model within that brand then complain about the wheels and tyres because of the roads where you live.....?

under any logic I don't understand "40% of the width is sidewall? That seems pretty poor to me."

Not complaining about the quality or specifications just saying that 17 inch rims would fare much better on the road I drive on.

I don't want to have to change tires every time I drive on a pothole and I doubt I can find any other compact sports sedan with 17 inch rims hence my question.

205/50 R17 same diameter within 0.5mm as 225/40 R18, some stretch but the WALL of visible tyre will hide that. would look good painted white too. and real comfy ride.

That was probably me. I fit 17" wheels with my snow tires and they fit fine, no spacers required. Now that spring has sprung I switched to the stock 18" Contis. With the mag suspension the ride is still fairly compliant on the 18's.

My S3 came with Continental SportContact 5's @ 225 / 40 / R18 92Y.

Have looked around a bit and got some recommendations so am just about to go get another set to replace my current ones. Pretty happy with their performance all round to be honest! Might opt for some Toyo's next time though..

I will be getting the same combo of mag ride with 18 inch rims. Will the ride be comfortable on bad roads or will it be harsh and bumpy?

I would not get Toyos! Had them on my TTS when it was delivered. Inconsistent grip, lots of road noise and wore out in 12,000 miles! Crap frankly.

Got the continentals on my S3. Covered 19k on them and they still good for another few thousand miles, given the current wear rates. Very happy with their performance too. I may replace with the same tyre when the time comes, I have been very pleased with them.

Interesting to hear that about Toyo's. Knew they were loud as had a set for a few months on my previous car, found the wet grip pretty good though.

Having to replace my whole set tomorrow. Going for the Continentals again. Got around 16,000 out of the set that were on from new. Did involve quite a bit of spirited driving last summer though and have had a few tracking issues which have caused a bit of uneven wear.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I was on some brutal back country roads this past weekend and the ride was firm but not harsh. Very comfortable after 5 hours of driving. The road feel is not great for hard cornering compared to my old Acura RSX but hat's not the fault of the tires.

Relieved to hear that thanks!

PSS are the best tyres ever! I'm pleased to hear that they fit on the S3.

Can I ask the dealer to have those fitted instead of the contis?

I'm quite impressed with the Conti's so far, and previously had PS3 and Eagle F1's on my last car

Thing with this car is that grip when accelerating shouldn't be an issue since it is quattro. I would worry more about traction if it were a RWD car.

The 'search' facility is a great tool my friend ;)

Please bear in mind you MAY get different tyres to the Uk spec. cars

IMHO the Conti's are quite noisy. Previous discussions on this matter have suggested I'm not alone...

Coming up on 15k miles and my tyres are almost done (just over 2mm left on the fronts). A bit disappointing compared to what I could get from PS3s on my old 8P (closer to 25k), but the extra power won't be helping there.

Thinking I'll give GY F1s a go this time. I have noticed 225/40/18s have gotten a lot cheaper since I last bought tyres though!

Just thought I'd add that mine which I picked up Saturday came with Dunlop Sport...... well pretty sure it is :p
