Hello,

I bought my first Audi a couple months ago and so far im pleased with it. But I only have one issue I haven't been able to solve.

My coolant tempature gauge doesn't move. It did when I test drive the car but after that it never did. Lucky me... And now a couple months later I got the code p0118 but my check engine light is off.

What ive done so far is only putting in a new tempature sensor. I also put in a second dash just to make sure it wasn't a faulty dash and the gauge didn't work either.

The car - 1999.5 Audi a4 b5 manual

Any ideas, comments and or suggestions on this issue?

Thanks in advance.

It'll be the thermostat. The guage probably isnt lying, the engines just never getting hot enough to read.

However first off, if the sensor you used was not a genuine audi part then either refit the original one or go buy a Genuine audi sensor. The aftermarket/ebay/motorfactors ones are crap and could be causing the issue so rule that out first.

Once you've done that, go to your climate control unit, and hold the recirc button down and press the up arrow. The display will show "1c". Use temp +/- to make it display "49c" then press recirc again, and the display will change to showing you the live coolant temperature.

Then you can drive around and watch the temp. You'll likely find it goes up to 60ish and doesnt get any hotter because the thermostat is busted. Once you've confirmed it gets up to 60ish, park up and leave the car idling for 10-15mins and see if it climbs any higher (make sure the AC is off when you do this) if it does, check the guage to see if the guage agrees with the climate unit.

Mine used to warm up but as soon as you joined a motorway the gauge just dropped. As aragorn said swwp the stat out with a decent OE item and go from there.

Ah, that ive actually done before. Mine reads a flux between 57-59c and never climbs. I do have luke warm heat in the car As well. So that's probably bad. But would it throw the code P0118 as well?

P0118 means the sensor is faulty

Well that sucks. I just paid 50$ for it. Ill order another right from Audi then. But to summerize. The sensor is faulty and my thermostat is faulty and both should be switched with only Audi oem parts. Correct?

I have exactly the same problem. I changed my coolant temp sensor and now my gauge doesnt read over 65-70 . Surely my thermostat isnt broken also because it worked 100% fine prior to me changing the coolant sensor, im sure the chances of the thermostat breaking at exactly the same time as fitting the coolant temp sensor are quite low so im hoping its just the ebay crap sensor i bought

We that's the thing. Ive always had warmish heat that wasn't hot per say. so I kinda assumed the thermostat. but as for the sensor it likes to kick on randomly like today is 91 (f) degress out and after 30mins of driving at 80 on the thruway the gauge actually started moving and held close to the half way mark on the Gauge. But when I got off the thruway and slowed down. It when back to not working or reading.

No i didnt do that anyway , not sure about the other dude

silly question but as im a mechanical numpty whats the easiest way to bleed system???

sorry for my absence, but to answer the prior questions. Yes I bled my system. And while I was gone I learned my tempature gauge is perfectly fine, like you all stated it was my thermostat, now I haven't changed it but what makes me make that guess is I went outside. Started the car and while in neutral I held the rpms at 3,000 for about 10mins. My temp started rising and maxed at 194 at the half way point where I first seen it when I bought the car. Then I put it in gear and drove a couple miles and watched the tempature go back down to below the Gauge, so thermostat is stuck open.

Am I correct on this assumption?
