I have just put 5 litres in with a filter change. How much should the capacity be before i start it? Incase i need to drain half a litre. Thanks! :)

According to the manual the approximate capacity for an oil and filter change on a 2.0 is 5.0 litres.
I would have been inclined to put 4.5 l in and see where you were with that. It's a lot easier to put it in than take it out. Either way I don't think the level will be far out.

Karl

Thanks everyone, we took the fuel filter out twice and drained the filter so prob wsnt far off 4.7 in the end :)

Do you mean the oil filter ?? :) I think 4.5L in and then check the level is the way to go.

Karl.

Ahaha yeah oil filter. Did the fuel one at same day, getting my words muddled :)

That time of year again. Had to remind myself how much oil I needed again so thought I would bump this post for everyone else incase it was useful (was useful to me again a year on :p)

4.7 Litres for a Audi B8 A4 2.0 TDi 170 CAHA.
5w30 Grade Oil

Helpful to bump this thred up, thanks @Meemo !

Might be slightly of topic but I am not sure if my B8 2.0TDI is over consuming oil or not (i know its an issue on the TFSI but dont know if its similar on the TDI).

I bought mine earlier this year and the guy had had its service and oil change done in January at around 63k miles, its now at 70k miles (I've been enjoying it a lot so have put on 5k on it in 3 months :D) and the MMI shows oil level at half guage.....does that sound about right or am I right to be a bit worried?

I mine is on quarter now, and was full May last Year, done maybe 20k, Diesels are oil burners anyway, my MPG is fine, and no smoking and feels lovely even at 115k ont he clock.
If someone says to you they see blue or white smoke when the engine is warm, that is the only time I would worry. But seems pretty normal for a diesel as far as I am aware.

and to reliveth this thread again, its that time of year once again :)
Actually a really good thread to keep an eye on my service history and remind me of the oil capacity haha seems its done 12k since last oil change and 2 years since fuel filter change so best have that sorted too :p
FYI Quantum longlife 3 5w30 on ebay is only £19 delivered! (same as castrol and what is used in the dealership)

Did mine at the weekend and took 5L. Looked all over for the VCDS readings to see what it should be but couldnt find them. The sensor is sooo slow at updating properly too.

Ended up just making sure its showing around 15-20mm on the laser dipstick and let the MMI work the rest out. hasnt complained yet and says its full.

Stuck the full 5L in.

Whats the method to get the little oil gauge up on the cluster? Tried to open bonnet, close it and all that stuff whilst ignition on, but all it did was complain the door was open and the ignition on.

Takes a few days sometimes, one time was in minutes to update, another time many days. If it is taking days, opening and shuttung the bonnet resets the bonnet catch sensor and can speed it up if that was stopping it updatibg, other wise is meant to be once the engine has reached temp and bonnet is shut. When mine said under filled it took much longer to update!

How much oil would the oil filter hold for future reference.? 0.3

And the engine will hold 4.7

On the 2.0 tdi 143bhp

After reading for several times about the quantity of oil that my a4 cjcb 2 liter tdi requires I decided to drop my experience over here so : I ve done the oil and filter job on Sunday morning and the car took all together 5 litres of oil. I've had the engine warm and all oil was coming out quite fast and I've measured the quantity and out was 5 litres as well...I was reading and all sort of forums values of 3.8 to 5 something litres for these engines but Meemo s was spot on...4.7 plus filter 0.3 and luckily I've got another 1 litre bottle of the same oil as initially I was prepared with a bottle of 4 litres so before you start this easy job be sure you get 5 l of oil. MmI reading is s#it so after oil change let the car run at idle for a while than run the engine on normal 40-50 mph and then when it s warm stop the car and leave it for two mins and it should read ok...It took me two days to make it work and the bonnet was lifted and drooped quite a few times for the sensor to get work. Hope this will help someone like me who s not the most experienced mechanic or DIY er
