Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying a 2006 Audi A3 S-Line DSG (170).
The car looks to have factory xenons fitted, but does not have the headlight washers?
From what I have seen and read, this doesn't seem normal?
My assumptions are that either the car has had the xenons fitted afterwards and the owner has not changed the bumper.. Or the xenons came from factory and the front bumper had been replaced for a non washer version (maybe due to an accident?)
What do you guys think? Am I wrong with the Xenons + Washer idea from Audi?

You are right, factory fitted Xenon headlights will have headlight washers.

When you go view the car, wash the windscreen a few times, this should activate headlight washers if there are any. If they crash into the bumper because there are no cut outs it isn't your problem is it...you were just checking everything works?

Thanks for the reply.
You are correct, I will do this inspection as well as look around the bumper and headlight to see if everything's ok.

Easiest way to tell if it has factory xenons look at the headlight switch if there is no roller switch for headlight adjustment then factory fitted and bumper has been changed or if it has a roller switch for them they have been fitted afterwards

Thanks Lewbo, I will definitely check this when I'm there :)

Not necessarily, just depends on how far the PO went with the install. I retrofitted mine and replaced the switch to the correct one without the adjustment roller. :)

Easy to have a look behind the drivers side fog light cover you should be able to see the headlight washer pump coming from the water bottle shown in my pic below.

This might be obvious, but it wasn't to me, so thought I'd post. When you are doing the test to see if the washers come on make sure to manually turn the lights on to be in the dipped beam position and then hold down the stalk to was the windscreen for at least 3 seconds as they activate on a delayed timer but ONLY if the lights are on.

I didn't know you needed the lights on for them to activate, only found out through trial and error :p

You guys are very helpful!
Rideen, I will definately check this later on, thank you.

I did buy the car, it has the single xenon headlights which are genuine and also the roller on the headlight switch, are the single xenon headlights adjustable from the switch? - I haven't tried them out yet but will do tonight!
Darren, I will check behind the foglight cover after work to see if it has the hose there :)

Have you got a pic of the headlight? Are you sure they are xenon and not halogen projectors? Can you see the ballast on the back of the housing? If they are retrofitted then they will not have the headlight self levelling that is required as well as the washers. Do you have the LED drl on them?
If you turn the lights on then start the car the headlights should come on and then electrically self lower a bit and then return to level again, this is the self test for the self levelling.

Ballasts are on the bottom of the A3 headlights.

Halogen headlights on the 8P are reflector units.

Again, just because they might be retrofitted doesn't mean they won't have the washer/levellers, depends on how far the PO went with the install.

Self levellers are a really difficult retrofit. Loads of kit and time and knowledge needed. Sensors on the suspension and wiring and a ecu etc.. Not many retrofits have had this work done. The washers are possible but again not cheap and lots of parts needed. I would be very surprised if they are retrofits if they have washers and self levellers retro fitted too.

Wiring the levellers aren't different to any other retrofit, I've done all 3 to mine (bi-xenon, washers and levellers) and wouldn't say it was overly difficult.

@Shandow any updates??

Are you talking about self levellers or with the button, you had to add the sensors to the suspension right?

Well it seems like the car didn't come with xenons as standard. There were no other lines coming from the washer bottle.
After all that, I remembered my friend works at Audi, who very kindly sent me a PDF of how the car was spec'd as standard.. No xenons confirmed!
Slightly off topic, I noticed the bulbs are different colours. Thinking of getting a new pair, are they D2S or D1S?
Thanks guys.

Hmm, I've read some conflicting stuff between the D1S and D2S, Bixenon and Halogen Xenon, the latter of which I have...
Just want to be 100% sure before making the purchase.

Whats the part number on top of the headlight say? Should begin 8P0.

Are they single xenon or bi-xenon?

How can they be halogen xenon. Halogen is one thing xenon is another. Are you sure they are not halogen projectors with xenon bulbs in as a retrofit?
If you could take a couple of pics and post them up showing the front and the back of the light housing that would help.

Halogen xenon as in the high beam are halogen and low beam being xenon.
Basically, not bixenon..
