Hi all,

Sorry for another tyre thread, I had a search but couldn't find a comparison.

I currently have Dunlop Sportmaxx RTs on the front and Contisport 5 on the back, they all need replacing within the next month or so going to replace them, the Dunlops have lasted 3500miles and less than 4 months and I don't find the Contis that grippy.

Can anyone compare the Dunlops to the Goodyear Assymetrics for wear? or any premium tyre that should last longer?

Cheers Greg

I am sure anything will last longer than 3500 miles, what are you doing with the car ???
I rate the Goodyear Assymetrics, A very good all round tyre at a reasonable price.
Have a look at tyreleader, great tyre prices delivered from Germany in around 3 days.

I thought that too! I must be driving quite spirited! It's a mix of country and M-way roads.
Cheers I will have a look :)

Yeah :( there is probably 1mm left before the marker so maybe able to just get a tiny bit more out of them.

I have Uniroyal Rainsport 3's on my FWD. I had rainsport 2's on my old car too. I find them very good value for money at £60 a corner for 225/40/18! Very good in both wet and dry! Had them since Feb and noticed pretty much zero wear on them after about 3k.

Also have you had a proper laser alignment done? That could be a possible factor in the tyre wear if it's not correct :) . No tread left after 3.5k does seem excessive!

I second 'tyreleader' ! Great website.

The guys over in the States and Germany also highly recommend 'Vredestein' Apparently, excellent in the wet! As well as good value for money..

Is the vehicle quattro or FWD?
Quattro

This is another tyre on my shortlist so good to hear some good reviews on them :)

Yeah I will getting this done, I am sort of hoping its out and its not just my driving that has caused it!

I've had several sets of (budget) Vredesteins which were indeed good, although possibly a bit noisy - however, my garage supplied the last pair as something called Apollo which they assure me is the same tyre, but they are now branded Apollo. Despite having them balanced at several different places, they must be malformed in some way as no matter what we do, there is still vibration. Previous sets were fine, so no issues with warped wheel etc, and they've been checked and found true. I'll not be putting any more on the car!

Got a FWD not a AWD, but I'm really pleased with the latest Eagle F1s I've just put on from a grip, noise, feel, mpg perspective. Had Falken 914 on before which were ok. Also used Vredestein which were ok and Michelins before - would say so far Goodyears are better (excluding wear which i can't form an opinion on!)

I got 20k+ out of michelin pilot sport 3's on my quattro admittedly when mainly driven on a long A-road commute.

have moved on to Rainsport 3's (and now fwd b7 tdi) which i don't think will last quite as well but are an excellent all round tyre.(hehe)

Thats unlucky Mike! Yes Apollo has acquired 'Vredestein' which is a bit confusing as Apollo are rubbish and Vredestein are supposed to be near enough premium!
Apollo where a budget brand from India and Vredestein are Dutch I believe.

Still would probably go with the Vredestein branding alone.

I have NangkangNS 2's on my car. Middle of the Road tire. Very happy with them so far. Nice tread pattern, good grip and happy enough in the rain. Yes they are quite noisy but this always seems to happen when you have low profile tires. Im on 235/30/20

Thanks guys, anyone had Avon ZZ5s? A tire shop I called yesterday for a quote said he put them on his RS5 and all his previous cars.
Not sure if was just trying to get me to buy them rather as he had them in stock than the Goodyears I called about!

Mine had contis all round didn't last long not a quattro though ,got Michelin pilots sports now fingers crossed they will be better .

I use Vredestein Sessanta on my Ex B5 and they run a bit quick as well but not that fast like yours ... now for my B7 i use Kumho LeSport KU39 and i can say - good tires , you can trust them for normal driving and in 235/40/18 - 100 each fully fitted !
I'm happy with them so i think if i put 19'' to go for Kumho again !

I like ZZ3 but once i asked the price and they tell me same as Michelin PS2 price :) so never again will ask for Avon !

Really? I always thought they were midrange. Ill be avoiding them cheers :)

Rang ATS about the Goodyears and was informed because I have an NUS student card that I get 10% off, so for 4 fitted comes down to £449. Cheaper than Blackcircles & my usual independent fitter, So will probably go with them.

Cheers for your help guys! Much appreciated.

Has anyone had nitrogen filled tyres?

I have these on the front of my 2wd at the moment and cant wait for them to wear out so they can be replaced with something else. IMO they're noisy and wet is grip not good enough.

I took full size 18'' for my spare and the guy make me price 90 fitted for the spare :) so may me soon when i go there for 4 again :) the price will be no different ! For 90 quid per tyre i think that is best ! I wish i can afford Michelin PS2 but i will not use them (mainly miss drive the car daily ) so is no point to pay 120 :) at the end of the day is up to the money and what you wish !

Goodyears are only around £110 fitted for 235/40/18 from F1 autocentres (who I used a few weeks back - their best price is their online price). Also phone up protyre, they can be very competitive over the phone.

Nearest F1 is in Chester to me :(

Threadwear - very important numbers when you choose tires !
All big names like Ps2 , Eagle F1 etc etc running quick because they have best grip ... Threadwear are numbers on tires between 160 and 400 ... ps2 is 240 whick is mean good grip but less miles ! Potenza has got 180 only ... So good for grip but not for long !
You choose what you after !

You're welcome Trimmtrab.

Yes I would stay away from them. Plenty of other tyre manufacturers that offer more bang for your buck.

I would 2nd the Kumho's. Ive heard good things about them. Currently impressed with my NangkangNs20's that ive got. We'll see how they last..

I just had Hankook Ventus fitted yesterday...already done 200 miles and so far absolutely brilliant. Early to tell but I think they may become best tyres I've ever fitted. Had Contisport 5s and they wear incredibly quick.

Price size place?

235/40/18 Y rating £450ish at ATS with Nitrogen inflation using my NUS discount card

Good good, my mate had them on his Passat and loved them. Yeah agree with the wear I had Contisports on the back, wore better than the Dunlops though!

FYI - Hankook Ventus is standard OE fitment on the new Audi TT and TTS.

Just putting this out there as alot of people think Hankook is a cheap/chinese knock off.

And if I am honest they are really good for what they are especially interms of cost as well.

Hello Greg,

Do you have a picture of the tyres tread that have worn down prematurely?

I sell tyres for a tyre wholesaler, something doesn't sound right there.

there could be a number of factors that cause the wear rate to be soo high, the Dunlop Sportmaxx RT has quite a soft compound, also could you list the specs of the tyre e.g. the size, load index and speed rating, e.g. 235/40/18 95Y XL (that's what I have on my car), if it has the incorrect load index for the car the tyre could wear prematurely too.

thanks Dan
