the new edition.. 110 TDi Quattro avant

Aren't S4 brakes bigger?

well.. ive not done nothing to the car.. I moved it today and used it to reverse the trailer up the drive with no brakes... the wife wasn't highly impressed but hey ho it needed done...

so I really need to make a start.. so tomorrows plan is filters and fluid service. and then the weekend will hopefully be brakes all going well.
ive got freshly rebuilt FL s4 calipers, mintex discs, pagid pads for the rear.. then ive got new calipers, mintex 312mm discs & pads for the front plus a set off goodridge braided flex pipes. so with this lot it should hopefully see it stopping again and it can get some use.

We'll hope weather hold out for you mate and no dodgy bolts that snap or round

cheers bud.
fingers crossed all should go well.
ive had the rear carriers off last year when I replaced the standard discs and had the front carriers off a few weeks ago so hopefully they'll all come back off fairly easy.
Ive got replacement rear carrier bolts if I need them so im good that way.

so I finally got time to set about the rear end.
I got the discs and braided flex pipes on and also had to make up the short hard line on both sides.
Im going to get new bolts to hold the dust guards on as mine are pretty dodgy looking.
once ive got them ill pull the guards off and paint them.
plan is ill paint the upright at the same time. but I wanted the car mobile again.

so I got my front 312mm fitted today.. no pics yet but well chuffed.
I fitted the new calipers with the 312mm discs and new pads so there is a great improvement in the brakes.
they inspire a lot more confidence in the car.

Ive still to fit my braided hoses but will need to get new front hard lines made first as the ends that go into the flex pipes on both sides are rounded to hell.

no before pictures but gives you an idea..
and yip.. my wheels need refurbished but there is other things I want to sort first.
Just ordered a gates timing belt kit and new water pump. so that will be the next job.

yea I wish I had took a before picture to show the difference.

ive still got a fair bit on the to do list..

will be doing the timing belt, water pump, power steering pump, full service, bigger nozzles and decat next week.
going to order a boost pipe as well and see if I can get the 130 turbo fitted while im in there.
going to see about getting a 130 egr delete pipe as well and fit the inlet but that can wait if need be.

Fair play! It's none stop with them,it's like every time I think right I'll get my turbo and intercooler in something else pops up.the list is now looking like yours ie.timing belt, water pump, front crank shaft seal (I think!) rocker cover gasket, full service, even bigger nozzles,vnt20 and intercooler! I figure if I've got the front off I might aswel do it all together ;)

Here's a quick one for you,if I got the aluminium uprights from a b6 would the s4 calipers and carriers work with them?i know I'd need different bottom arms but that's not an issue really, and they would be 321mm right?

Correct.

I used alloy uprights but got the calipers from a C6 A6 which were 312mm same as JBH has used.

You can fit B5 S4, all the way up to B7 RS4 brakes to the alloy uprights.

Personally, i'd avoid going too large, as you dont need the extra and it just costs you more money both in maintenance and buying them in the first place.

The 320mm ATE setup used on later B7's and Allroads is probably what i'd be buying, or the B6 S4 setup that brad's got.

if your car currently has the small ones then yes it does.

I think most 4 cylinder B5's have the small ones.

Depending on exactly what gearbox setup you have will depend on what CV's you need. S4 shafts will fit whole if you have a box with 108mm inners.

This site never fails to impress me!thanks guys it good to have options,as I know of a breakers not to far away that specialises in audis and could probably pick stuff up handy and at the right money.

Yeah mine are B6 S4's id agree with aragorn though id go 320mm ATE as used on the later stuff the standard S4 B5 stuff is whack imo

Youll need

Uprights S4 or later ally ones but youll need lower control arms if go ally route
Driveshafts if smaller 72mm bearing fitted originally if 82mm shafts arent needed
Brakes (calipers, pads, disc and pads, hoses etc)

Coupled with the 300mm rears they should work well !!

its the 256mm rears ive got the now. how do I go about the 300mm rears? is that with the trig brackets?
you got a pic of youre rears @Bradderz_1988

wont be for a while before I do this but would like to start building up a parts list of bits.
I will get some use out of the stuff ive fitted first though..

my next list of bits is bigger turbo, bigger nozzles and getting it serviced which ive got all the bits sitting to do.

once that's done ill move to suspension. ( think that will be soon )
after that I want to get the paint work sorted out.

Last edited:
Trig brackets, facelift s4 b5 calipers, S4 b6 300mm discs and new hoses.
Before you start doing suspension, decide what kind of brakes you want to get, and change uprights/lower control arm at the same time.

ive not long fitted new arms to the car. as for suspension I mainly mean springs and shockies.
ive got the FL s4 rear calipers so im half way there.. just need the Trig brackets and hoses then the discs..
( im already tempted to get hoses from Trig to do away with the stupid hard line on the bottom wishbone )

as I say ill start building up a parts store then change them once I have everything there but no rush at the moment.

As above

If i was to start again (well i sort of am doing with the build) id do all the suspension, mounts, wheels tyres etc and do the engine side of things last.

I spent 1k on a frankenturbo kit which i wish id of never of done and ive also bought an ATP GT28 hardware kit (no turbo) and now im in two minds wether to go that route, im leaning more towards a full race manifold, ext wastegate and hta gtx30 turbo.

But thats costly so im thinking of doing the stroker build and buy a chinese or used 28rs turbo and run it like that to save for a full frame setup and enjoy a quick spool with nice low down torque for a good while before i go with a laggier high end power turbo.

my thoughts is now the brakes are sorted I can bolt the bits on ive got while im giving it a fresh belt and service.
the bolt on bits ive got the now ( 130 turbo, inlet, decat and 0.216 nozzles ) stand me about £100 so that will give me a wee bit extra poke

I'm running on s4 shockies the now so it drives well but I want to lower it hence im thinking springs.
I need to get a pair of rear arms for the back end as the bushes are dry and twisting on the bolts so I cant get my 4 wheel alignment done the now.
so there next on the list.
I have a feeling one of my rear springs are broken ( I fitted new ones last year!! ) Im going to check this out the next dry day.

hoping Kev will start stripping his avant soon as I can hopefully get the bits off him.

once that list is done ill concentrate on getting my wheel refurbished and getting the body work up to scratch.
I can build parts up for the bigger brakes through time but my upgrade ive done the now should be fine for the power ill have for the moment.
hopefully through time I can look at a FMIC and a BV43 turbo and a different set of nozzles.

I've got the suspension off the old car :) I just need to figure out what bits i'm swapping.

Unforutnately the rear eibach shocks are leaking so i cant fit those to the new car as a complete set which is a little annoying. Will send you a PM the now!

just ordered my self a locking kit off ebay for doing the timing belt.
not bad for £40.49 does a range of vag petrol and diesel engines so I know ill use it again in the future

so my locking kit arrived Thursday and im impressed with how the bits are. ive used a sealey kit in the past and I would say the bits in this one are of equal quality..
my A6 130 boost pipe arrived today so that's all the bits I need sitting here so all I need now is a dry day.. that could be harder to get than anything else!!

so hopefully soon Ill get the front end off do the timing belt, water pump, power steering pump, 130 turbo, decat, 0.216 nozzles and a full service.. I reckon she should go pretty well afterwards

One last thing on this, would the front control arms from an allroad work on my b5?also could I get away with changing the cv joint while using my own shafts?

so far im happy with what im running.
I would like to upgrade to the newer calipers through time but having fitted new front calipers to the car I'm tempted to wait a while..
the brakes are good and are like night and day to what the car was like before. so ill keep with what ive got the now and just keep my eyes open for cheap parts to upgrade through time.

.

I think that's what's going to have to happen here too,was full sure I came across a set of carriers earlier but we're actually mk5 stuff, mailed heaps of breakers on eBay like you said but so far they've either all been sold or are selling the complete kit only.....the hunt continues ;)

Yeah will do mate, have you got around to doing your belt yet?hopefully doing my own on the weekend, gonna throw the fmic while in in there

not yet will hopefully get it done this weekend if its dry.
I ended out doing my mates timing belt on his passat last weekend. he had a snapped auxiliary belt, a knackered tensioner and a seized clutch pulley and was doing a 400 mile trip on Monday so his was needing attention before mine. plus my car hasn't turned a wheel all week.

my new boost pipe arrived so when the front ends off ill fit the 130 turbo as well.

Fair play, bet he was happy with that ;)

Do you know the thickness of the tool used to lock the cam?i was looking at buying one but if I have something that will work I probably won't bother.

Yea he was pretty chuffed. Ill get a measurement off it tomorrow for you. I reckon with a bit of plate the right thickness and a good cutter and a bit of tidying up with a file it could be made
