Rumbling/grinding when turning right???

Hi all,

Recently had my steering rack changed, and wheels aligned. All seemed fine until driving on the motorway when I shift lane (to the right) I can hear a grumbling vibration noise and can feel a bit of vibration through the steering wheel. It is quite loud at higher speeds. It is nice noticeable when travelling around 30mph.

is this anything to worry about? Could it just be my tyres? (Nearly fully worn and not in great shape)

Could be a cv joint like on my leon. Could of happened when subframe was lowered while rack was changed.

Ah okay, any definitive way to find out exactly what's causing this? Is it dangerous to drive the car as it is?

Get underneath and take a look at all your steering components and suspension. Check for movement or any knocking. To try and rule out tyres or wheels swap the fronts to back. And see if the noise is the same or moves also check your tyre pressures.

Thanks for the replies Checked tyre pressures, pas fluid....all fine, gonna get it on the ramp and have a look

Right CV joints fine, bearings fine ...can't see anything wrong with the suspension ....not sure...could.it be the diff?

Update: Car is completely fine full lock left and right slow and intermediate speeds. HALDEX system seems fine...can't see any leaks anywhere...really puzzled...could it be that one of the steering rack bushes was fitted incorrectly/not at all!?

I found the only real way of checking the wheel bearing was by slackening the driveshaft nut and removing the brake caliper and thats when i found ALOT of play. Just by jacking the car up and rockin the wheel up n down n side to side there was no movement. I know the driveshaft takes some play up when nut is tightened but in my case i just replaced the bearing and the hub flange and all has been fine since

Ah okay, I would have thought that the wheel bearing would make more of a whining noise under all circumstances...not just when turning right which leads me to believe it may be the steering rack bush?

The power steering pipe hitting the drive shaft (not leaking but it will if it continues). The pipe should be fixed in place but left loose & this is the result. I only experienced it when a garage was working on mine & didnt fix it back in place properly & i needed to pop down the road for a fill up.

Thanks for the suggestions, with my mechanic now up in the air, hopefully will be nothing too serious! :(

Probably not the case (and I'm sure you've already checked) but I had a similar experience shortly after I got my car a few months ago. Took a quick spin round the block with my father, everytime I turned right I would get exactly what you described he suggested I stick it in neutral as I took the corner and it just went away. After 20min of fiddling and looking we found it just needed fluid for the steering

Right so I've had it up in the air, my mechanic has checked absolutely everything as says everything is in order, bearings are fine no knocking, nothing worn, everything is in order....could it be my tyres? They are very worn and on the limits at the moment, its clear that the previous owner has swapped them around to get maximum life out of them... any ideas?

Right changed tyres....its still ****** there! Had alignment recheck all fine!!!! Any ideas...I'm starting to go crazy now...could it be a badly refurbed rack????

I had this issue when I first bought my S3 and it did turn out to be the Wheel hub bearings. Again, only when turning left/right (near full lock). How did your mechanic check and make sure the bearings were okay?

Hmmm well this is the slightest right turning of the wheel right. Its almost like an on/off thing. With the steering centered theres no noise at all or rumbling however as soon as the wheel is turned even the slightest bit to the right the rumbling appears. Only gets worse with speed and not steering angle. Not sure exactly how my mechanic checked the bearings but I trust him and he's assured me they are completely fine...

maybe power steering pump, mine sounded horrific and progressively got worse as it started to jam up occassionally... this was mine, pretty easy to hear its knackered, new part was alot quieter.

Drops links sound pretty bad when they're knackered, cheap and easy to replace too.

Hmmm thought it may be but there's no noise at all full lock either direction....its a very strange problem, the slightest turn of the wheel right and the rumbling instantly appears...even 1 degree!

My money is on the wheel bearing, I had the same issue which progressively got worse. When you turn you apply extra load to the wheel. When checked on a lift there was no play. In the end I ended up replacing both as I was unable to establish which side was causing the issue. You would assume turning right causes extra load on left front wheel and vise versa however in my case it was the opposite.
