Hi guys I don't post on the a4 section very often i can usually be found on the 8p a3 forum.i just wondered if you guys might be able to help my partner has a 61 plate a4 saloon in the last couple of days we've heard a whining noise whilst driving which sort of resembles the noise you get with cheap tyres which gets worse when you speed up thanks in advance for any help

I had a whining noise in my car, it was intermittent. I tracked it down in the end... It was my wife !

Jack it up and Try pulling the top of the wheel out toward you, see if a baring has collapsed ?

Thanks guys the cars just front wheel drive so i'am thinking you could be right about the wheel bearing I'll jack the car up tomorrow and have a look

Thanks

(Assuming you have no children...)

All together.... Wheel bearing!
General advice is to change both sides as the other won't be far behind. I didn't do that 15k miles ago and the other side is fine.

Thanks for your help the noise is starting to drive me up the wall I'am going to jack it up in the morning and see what I can see
Cheers

What everyone else said - wheel bearings. I had mine done on my 08 at 45k.

My advice is check all 4 tyres for tread feathering! I had it occur on a bmw and Audi. Badly worn tyres can easily immitate a wheel bearing rumble and is by far cheaper to fix ;)
