The abs light is on and the centre display lights flash red with the 3 beeps on starting, the 1.8T A 4 has had an abs unit fitted which was from a scrap yard, the car was like this when I had it, have replaced a front sensor with no result. Have tried a vgate scanner but it keeps saying not linking so cannot try to find the fault. Any ideas or help would be great, have mot in 4 weeks and the beeps are really annoying.

If the pump is not linking then maybe it is faulty

try abscity.co.uk as they sell abs pumps

car must communicate with the pump

It could be the Vgate scanner that CAN'T read the ABS ecu. Some aftermarket scanners don't function correctly.

As already pointed out, either purchase VCDS or look on the VCDS user map and see if there is anyone local to you and ask them to scan your car.

HOWEVER, sometimes a poor performing battery will flash the brake warning when starting the car too. This is because the voltage is too low when cranking. It's worth having the battery checked/charged/replaced.
