Following on from my other thread (http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/help-with-a-wire.242955) about the mystery wire, I have now started the car up following a change of timing belt, coolant pump and all other belts. It seems to be running fine, other than that there is a slow drip coming from the drain plug on the brand new coolant pump. It seems to be tight, so I guess I will have to drain all the coolant back out, take out the plug and try to seal it better with PTFE tape or something like that!

Anyone else had experience of anything like this? I'd assumed that a new pump would have a correctly fitted & torqued drain plug!

I assume the pump is external? If so, I would remove it and take it back for an exchange/refund.

Clearly something isn't right with it. It would make me question the build quality of the rest of the pump.

Is it a genuine pump or pattern part?

I didn't know there was a drain plug on Audi water pumps, but hey ho you learn something every post. There may have been a fibre or aluminium washer in the kit, maybe it's missing. Save taking the pump off and find a suitable washer to fit or if there is plenty of thread use PTFE.

Well, it's actually on the water pump housing to be exact. I replaced the entire thing as a bolt sheared off when I removed the pump. I took the plug out this morning and wrapped some PTFE tape around the thread. It now seems to be holding, fingers crossed. I wouldn't like to have to replace the pump again, as it was a bit of a nightmare to fit. FWIW, I believe the pump I replaced was the original 17 year old item, plastic impeller and all. It looked like new so I wish I'd just left it alone and saved myself a lot of hassle!
