As the title suggests, when I rev 2nd past 6k the change to 3rd is very awkward and not particularly slick to say the least! . . I must add it never crunches though

I know the real answer to this is going to be "go 02M" but seeing as I've just splashed out on a LSD there's NO CHANCE of that happening! . . Plus I rather like doing 115mph in 3rd ;)

My real question is - Seeing as the box is going off to have the diff put in soon, will it help to have a new syncro put in (3rd) while it's there?

Sorry for the off topic but you will have to let me know how the LSD is in the 02j as I'm debating buying one rather than going 02m, have you tried adjusting the linkage ontop of the box first or is that fine dude?

All my 02J were like this. Some more than others but all were slow to shift at high revs.

May well be worth a mini rebuild to minimise it as much as poss I guess.

They all do it, its probably what makes the boxes last so long......

Too bad its £3,000 for a dog gear set

Putting a LSD in a 02J and just going 02M are two completely different things that can not really be compared... LSD in a 02J will not change how it shifts or the ratios but will change how it gets power down, especially while cornering. And going 02M will give you shorter ratios and slicker high revving changes.

That being said I love the long ratios in the 02J, when I had a S3 I found that if you're taking a round about quickly it's a 3rd gear affair. . . Which is just all sort of wrong IMO!

Yeah I know that dude my car spins on corners and stuff and it's not even mapped yet so will be terrible once remapped that's why I want lad I love the ratio aswell I got 146 in 5th the other day which suprised me :kissmyrings:

In that case you will probably already know the answer to your original question then...

And mate, wait until you've got a turbo that supports power past 7k rpm, complete game changer! . . I'm pretty sure I can do 145 in 4th if I take it to the limiter

I've never understood why it matters what gear your in at a given speed

Long ratios suit the narrow power and of a ko3/s really well. You stay closer to peak torque for longer and it suits the car.

With a bigger blower with a better spread of torque, the 6 speed really brings it to life big time.

4/5/6th are pretty much identical to the old 3rd/4/5th, but gone is the huge gap between second and 3rd, and instead you get an utterly savage second and an amazing 3rd that'll pull strongly from 40-100mph.

Going 6 speed was one of the best things I've done. It changes SO much better. And the ratios are much better suited to my uses.

Not cheap though when you factor in a diff, clutch, and flywheel.

Yeah I can imagine it's mental I've never driven mine past 110 before as the roads I use just don't allow it so give it short bursts was impressive waiting on a call from r tech

Prawn... =] Did you put a 6 speed into a a3? Im currently running my a3 with a 5 speed KO3S 234bhp, feel like there more left in the engine, but not the length of gear, to faster than 150...? plus having the 6th will aid fuel consumption on the long journeys!

Your problem is that you need a bigger turbo! . . K03s is basically gutless past 5k rpm

And Prawn, think you hit the nail on the head there.... However you really need to stop saying things that influence me to spend more money!

Mucho Gracious

A ko3S at 230bhp should be able to pull off the speedo, but it'll be ****** slow beyond 130ish.

On the 02M with more power it pulls happily to 150 in 5th before you grab 6th :)

02M makes the car more lively low down and more civilised on cruise.

From 2009, lol

excellent thread Dave! Reading the first post I was all set to dispute it, having seen a fraction over 150 on the GPS in my fwd 1.8T A3 (not on public roads). Then I read your post regarding the A3, and I'm happy again.

I know for sure I'm proud to have an o2J, I personally think the 1.8T doesn't need 6 gears....

You knob

I can't believe you searched for a post 6 years old to call me out

Opinions change. haha. Ko3S back then. 5 speed still lovely for a ko3S.

Game changes with more power though. 6 speed all the way now!

Lol, I was googling about theoretical top speeds and you said that in a thread and I was like

Oh-really-tell-me-more.jpg

Jokers...^

It happily will get to 155... cruises nicely at 120-140, but it feels like im definitely forcing it... haha

above 140, you are

Ko3S is a decent little blower for a bit of fun, but it's all out of puff at big speeds.

As funny as all the banter is, I think it actually gets to the point quite nicely...

I never had an issue when running a k03s, 02J was sweet... Oh well, I may think about goin 02M next year. And to be fair I just went out in the old girl and it did crunch a little on quicker changes to 3rd, so maybe get the syncro changed when I'm getting the diff put in

nah

:p

just get a proper box and diff

:)

Cheaper to go 02M than it is to drop £3k on a gearset though :'(

That said, I would genuinely kill for a straight cut box in the A3. The noise is intoxicating!
