Hi all, first off yes i have done a search, found a few things im going to try, just figured it a good idea to have my own thread up to record suggestions and results etc :D

Anyway im new to this part of the forum, had a 2.0 PD140 A3 8P, but it was boring so i sold it, pocketed some extra cash and bought an S3 8L.

But yeah to the point, it has an idle, that is sometimes too high (1100/1200rpm) and sometimes bang on (900ish) and when ticking over the needle can be seen going up and down and up and down a few hundred rpm, its subtle but definately there.

But the more annoying point is when i plant my right foot the car accelerates, then sort of has these split second hold backs, where it looses power, ever so quick, but if theres a few of them in a row its a real pain, somethings obviously not right. Its like a stutter, thats the best word i can think to describe it at the minute. it does it less when accelerating down hill, and not at all going up through the revs if i accellerate slowly, its only when planting the throttle below say 4000rpm (roughly).

I have cleaned the throttle body, then realigned by disconnecting the battery then reconnecting and turniing ignition on for 30 seconds. I have fitted new spark plugs. I tried disconnecting the maf and that made it hunt and run **** and also put a warning light on the dash. I have also cleaned what i believe to be the fuel pressure regulator.

Its been stage 2 mapped and i run it on super unleaded.

Suggestions please..

Thanks all :)

i would be checking your coil packs and your coil pack wiring harness mate, if you haven't already for £140 from awsome gti I'd upgrade to 2.0tfsi coil packs and get the replacement wiring harness.
Have you had your s3 on vagcom?

Bidded on a cheap set of coils on ebay from a BAM, then seen i could get TFSI ones for not much more but i ended winning the cheap ones, DOH! Will swap them out and see what happens, the coils on it now dont match so atleast one has been replaced before...

Risky going secondhand but hey they might be in better condition than what's in, while your there changing them I can't stress enough to check your wiring harness these cars are old and the heat hasnt been kind to the wiring. Let us know what the outcome is bud

Going to check the loom after work today, see if i can follow it and get my head around how people replace them, heard lots of mentions of soldering?:/

Wish i didnt blow this weeks car money on a quickshift a poly dogbone mount and a load of polishing supplies lol!

Just checked the coilpack wiring and i can see atleast a couple splits with some green copper in there, probably some nice high resistance in there! I dread to think what the rest of it looks like :( Am i right in thinking the wiring goes round the front of the head and into the main engine loom? That will be why people splice in at the side of the head there?

New harness is £35 from awesome gti bud and yes side of the head is the place to splice in and solder, not heard of any problems with the rest of the loom just the harness as it gets all the heat from the mani and turbo. Rip it all apart and I bet there's loads of bare wires it'll be spiking like hell.

Yeah that's the one mate I know it says not for 210 or 225 but I know a few members running this harness with no issues and it's the one I'm going for

Will get one of those ordered up then ;)

Tested and swapped out a few coils today, now that i have 9 all together i picked out the better ones. Idle is still doing its own thing, and now the cars popping back out the exhaust on downshifts, but it seems to go forwards better lol. Also noticed the other day that it STINKS of petrol out the back, as if not much of it is getting burnt... But that would make sense when most of the coil pack wiring has holes and splits in and all the plugs are cracked and broken. Awesomegti are out of stock of wiring looms which is not so good :( Just hoping all my electrical tape holds it together.

Also have VCDS coming tomorrow so i can get it scanned and attempt to repair this silly car!

Ok so, i was just browsing multiple forums reading threads that even slightly related to me, found a few about the maf and people having luck cleaning it, so **** it, still day light, went outside and whipped it out, pulled out the element, gave it a liberal spraying of carb cleaner let it dry, then again with contact cleaner and let it dry, disconnected the battery, put it all back together, fired it up and hey presto an almost stable 900rpm idle, not bad for a car with holes in the wires lol! Tomorrows drive to work will be the proof but so far its a bit better.

Definately better, not all there though. I checked the MAF readings and its only reading like 2.83g/s... does that mean its not to good?

i wouldn't know tom as not done any logging in mine yet, I'll ask a man that does know tomorrow for you.

Done PCV delete today, loads of the pipes had holes in, they were just a massive bodge of broken pipes and electrical tape and jubilee clips lol! The idle is now better than ever! Coilpack loom will be here tomorrow hopefully then i can debate when to start doing that...

And because the cars behaving i bought a second hand powerflow cat back ;)
