Other than by turning the volume down to zero I can't see any other way of silencing/turning off the radio. It always seems to be on by default, which is usually fine unless I've got friends in the car, in which case we don't always need background sounds.

I have all the usual MMI gizmos that control things, but although I can see how to select radio stations and how to select CD tracks if one is inserted, I can't find anywhere that tells me how to actually switch things off altogether!

Anybody help here?

Hold down the volume control button next to the gear stick for a few seconds

Power

You've only had your car a fortnight and you've already discovered this!

How ridiculously straightforward! Many thanks!
He probably read the manual - how boring!
Also, just tap the knob to mute (or press the volume control on the steering wheel)

Lol..took me 8 months before I realised the armrest slid back & forward

+ 1..my 12 year old discovered that one at first I thought it was a poitless armrest.

This is really funny. The first thing I noticed when I climbed in for my first test drive was that the armrest slid back!!!

Trouble with the manual (and the accompanying booklet for the MMI) is that there's so much stuff in there to do with safe do's and don'ts and Audi advice about driving, parking, lights on, doors locking, etc., etc., that it's really quite hard to locate the info you're really looking for. In total there must be close on 400-odd pages of manuals to wade through, so it's hardly surprising that most of us can learn a few hitherto unrealised tricks from our forum friends!

Haha ....I discovered it by seeing the power icon on it ! ....and ive had my car 6 weeks now ;-)

I've also only just discovered that you can also deselect stop start (ie start the engine if it has stopped) by pressing down hard on the brake pedal, as well as by touching the throttle - every day is a school day!

I think clicking in the volume button on the righ hand side of the steering wheel also mutes the radio. A good feature when using spotify as it mutes AND pauses the track...

It does, but if someone calls you the screen pops up again...
Wow just tried this the screen also closes again once the call is finished. I did not appreciate the phone paired with the car when the MMI was shut down. Just waiting for the next little gem......

But I don't think you can make a call unless you turn it on again, which is a bit of a pain. The phone option disappears from the DIS.

I made a call by directly using the phone the screen then popped up for the duration. Not ideal I guess but it solves one of my gripes. I have not been happy with the screen always rising up every time I switch on the ignition, now I know the phone pairs and will accept an incoming call even if I have turned off the MMI. Quite often I drive with no music or sat nav etc just listening to the engine and exhaust noise (sad I know) the screen mechanism has a finite life and stopping it coming up when I don't want it will hopefully extends its life

The best thing I have found up to now is: Put it in 3rd gear and push the right pedal to the floor! The sound and the pulling power is amazing :D I did it at the weekend with the wifes sister in the back, she gave out a little 'ohhhhh' :D

no, just press it down once - instant mute

also works whilst sat nav is on if you want to switch off the voice navigation - when she speaks press the volume button down once and it mutes her

But the poster said he wanted to "switch it of altogether". For that you need a couple of seconds on the button.
Importantly, mute isn't retained when you stop and start the engine. Complete turn off is.

On a side note, I have nav audio off and rely on visual cues, if I need audio to back up the visuals I press the Nav button on the right side of the steering wheel.

I have had a little more success setting the volume to "1" and the radio usually fires up very quietly next time I get in. I'm sure 8P's could choose "on vol" such a backwards oversight on the 8V.
