Saloons and Roof Racks...

Hi guys,

As I don't have the option of folding the rear seats down, I've ben thinking about a set of roof racks. I do the occasional long haul trip to a well known Swedish home shop, but also do a lot of my own DIY (currently doing our house up top to bottom). The Golf was brilliant as the rear seats folded, but the Audi is a PITA. I didn't even check this when I bought it as I never thought for one minute an Audi would have this feature missing... Anyway!

So, I'm after a set of roof racks. They're not going to be on the car all the time, just occasionally: at the moment I can think of at least 3 occasions when they'll be needed in the next 3 or 4 months. I've been looking online and was wondering if the racks for a B6 saloon would fit the B7 as the cars are almost identical in shape. The difference in price between the B6/B7 is about £100. If I was using them daily, this wouldn't be an issue, but for light occasional use then it's too much.

Anyone using B6 racks on a B7 saloon? Or anybody recommend some reasonably priced 3rd party models?

Cheers!

Get yourself some OEM ones from eBay etc, great fit, secure and won't damage your paint. I sold mine not that long ago but can't remember how much for, it wasn't a great amount of money. B6 ones will fit too.

I wanted OEM to be honest, but didn't want to get flamed for not wanting to spend a lot but still wanting quality! As long as B6 OEM racks fit thats the route I'll go down.

Cheers for the info!

I can vouch for thule racks! Best £20 gamble i ever took!

probably a bit late in the day now , but maybe an avant would have been better if you are wanting to carry diy kit etc, you'd only need the cross bars then and more space inside too, just a thought.;)
as others say, loads of saloon racks on fleabay and halfords offcorse.:icon thumright:

I always wanted an Avant, but we live right on the coast and getting something come up under 80 odd miles away that was the right model/colour/mileage was a pain. I've been burnt too many times before travelling to see a 'minter', so wasn't going to do it again. Had I have known that the rear seats wouldn't fold down I'd have stuck it out for an Avant! Wanted a decent estate car ever since the 850 T5's raced in the BTCC. Didn't even think to check either as I just figured it was a given, more so as my Golfs seats did. I do curse Audi for that!

But I'll survive: I'll keep an eye on eBay. I don't need them immediately, so I've got a few weeks to sniff out a good pair of genuine rails-and it's got to be genuine so I know it's proper. Age makes this kind of thing important, 10 years younger and I'd not have cared one iota about folding seats and roof racks: now it's practicality all the way :lmfao:

I've got a 300L thule box, a roof box is a roof box at the end of the day, all depends on what you want to spend, most box's have adjustable brackets so you shouldnt have a problem with fitting

Not as far as i'm aware, they should just fit, the feet normally adjust!

On a side note ebay is brilliant, i picked mine up on there for £20 lol
