A3 8l alternator or battery failed??

Hi all, my little s reg a3 1.8t sport has been very reliable, however today it got me 15 miles on the dual carriage way and to work, went to start up and was only just barely turning over. Bumped off ok and got me three miles to my office where it died. On the way to the office I had a battery light and abs light came on.
Bumped off again at the office but only got me couple of hundred yards. Now completely dead.

I have noticed over the past couple of months that even after daily use, it'll some times be a bit steady starting up like it's almost not going to start.

I'm suspecting that my alternator has slowly been dying and has finally packed up. Don't know if it's related but my stereo has also begun cutting out whilst engine running above a certain volume level

Any thoughts or experiences appreciated

Yeah gotta multimeter just need to get car home and maybe try bump it off to get a quick reading off alternator.
Might try a nearby scrappiest for one
 
Any ideas which alternators might be interchangeable, mk Iv golfs etc
 
Went back to the car to tow it home, it started up and went another mile, so defo think it's alternator
 
start the car, hook up the multimeter (Volt setting, 20v) on each terminal of your battery and take a reading . A good alternator should read around 14-14.5v constant - regardless of how much electrical drawing equipment you have on.
 
Evening all, popped to scrappies and got a 120a alternator. It's jumped off straightaway in leads and left it ticking over for a while, gonna pop out for a drive very soon to replenish the battery as much as possible.

Few questions, I've read here and on other forums that upgrading the alternator is part of the big three whatever that is! Been a electrician I'm concerned about the size of cable and protective fuse near the battery ? Should I upgrade anything else ? Or nothing to worry about? The fuse is much more substantial looking than the other fuses. Thoughts and recommendations appreciated
