if you can catch your nail on it, then it can mean it's too deep to polish out.
I've managed to get rid of a few deep marks like below, but requires wet sanding.
before, this car had been damaged in a car park, my mate was being quoted hundreds of pounds to fix it:
after a few hours...
so it can be done, but I would be surprised if polish can do it alone if it's deep enough to catch your nail.
