Seems to be one step at a time putting this thing back together.

New v-belt between the PAS and water pump seems to hang very loose off the two pulleys. It's a Dayco item from ECP and the measurements seem right, but surely it can't be supposed to be this loose...

New waterpump installed, otherwise it's going back together exactly how it was. Any ideas?

Thanks!

If i turn the PAS pulley clockwise it takes the water pump with it, but if I turn the water pump anticlockwise it just slips.

Strangely the new belt seems exactly the same size as the old one when I have them side by side, but the new one has about half as many "teeth".

I'll have a look at my "before the teardown" pictures when I get home and see what the belt looked like in the beginning.

The above pic was actually taken before I tightened the pulley bolts, which made some difference but only a bit.

Hmmm, below was what the original looked like after several years of stretching:

Slack, but not floppy. Gnnnnhhh.

I'll buy an actual honest-to-goodness VAG belt and see if that's any better. Damn, was really hoping to get this done this weekend.

New belt now ordered from stealership. None in stock because the 1.8t engine is such a rare thing.

Insanity.

they stopped fitting 058 block 1.8T's to cars 15 years ago, so its not really a surprise is it?

The 1.8T is still used in some vag models, but the later variants all have an internal water pump as the block is based on the transverse engine
