Evening all, Ive read numerous threads about the rattling turbo wastegate rod.

There are several members including myself who havent yet got our cars and are dreading the possibility of the sound......

Im trying to find out how common it is so thought Id post a poll.....

Well considering it doesn't affect all engines this poll isn't going to work.

Known issue on 1.4 TFSI and dealers have a fix
Known issue on 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI currently no fix

It's a design fault in all affected engines, some people just don't hear it etc. I don't have my car yet but have researched this topic heavily, as I had it on my old car (MK6 GTI). I fixed that by buying a wastage rod clip from ebay and fitted myself. No such item exists yet for 1.8/2.0 tfsi.

Sorry, I assumed all knew it was only on the 1.8 and 2 ltr engines.

However, Ive not heard it on the demo I drove and a 7000 mile used car (both s3) and I have a fair ear for obscure engine noises!

I have it, it took me a while to notice it, but once I did well its always there now, just to make sure It wasn't just all in my head I had the girlfriend come out for a drive and even she heard it. I emailed my salesman who forwarded my email to the front of house manager that was over a week ago, I chased, was told by my salesman that he would remind this front of house manager monday... well its Tuesday now and still heard nothing. Not impressed thus far with the aftersales service from this dealership.

I have it as well, but that's why the music is normally set to above 20. Don't hear anything then :)

60% have it so far although it seems it doesnt get any worse over time....

40% say they dont have it......

It's only common on the lower powered 1.4 engines, not the 140&150ps versions....

I have booked my 150ps TFSI in to have it looked at next Tuesday. I quoted "the rattling turbo wastegate rod" and was told that they've never heard of it before and I should take everything I read on forums with a pinch of salt :)

I will post an update once they have carried out their review...

I can hear a pronounced rustle at 1,800rpm at a steady 30mph. I assume this is the fault you are referring to?

The modification that was made to the wastegate rods were to the 1.4 122ps engine and fitted at the factory to new cars and I think commenced well before your car's build date, however, as stated, yours isn't the engine normally afflicted by this and I think you are the first person to comment on this...

The 1.4 wastegate rattle occurred at 2k to 3k rpm quite consistently if you didn't have the clip fitted. I too have not heard of any of the 150COD engines being affected by this.

I'm now thinking that the noise is more pronounced when the engine is cold??

I noticed this the day after I picked mine up. I thought it sounded like wastegate rattle and a quick google brought up numerous threads on the issue. Even the missers can hear it, which is surprising. I can't be bothered taking it back to the dealers as there doesn't seem to be a fix at the moment. Eagerly awaiting any updates as it drives me bonkers.. I normally prefer to listen to the car rather than the radio.

Happening on mine at 8K miles, Turbo sliders sound like a bag of nails - in workshop for review
