Hi, this is my first post here, so far i have been reading, now i decided to post.

i own Audi A4 B7 2.0TDI Avant 2006, bought it 5 months ago. From day one i had really low mpg, but the car was chipped to stage 1. So i went yesterday and it back to stock, and im getting pretty much same readings...

I have a friend with exact same car and hes pulling way better mpg than me.

Here is comparators:
Driving 50 on highway - he is pulling 80mpg and im pulling 50mpg
Driving 75 on highway - he is pulling 50mpg and im pulling 38mpg

My average mpg is 30-35 ( combined highway and city ) and im thinking that its something wrong with this.

I filled up full tank and did 627KM (389.6mile) and it still showed me 250km more left on dis, but i went to gas station and filled it up again all the way to the top and it took 52 liters. Half of that mileage was done on highway doing average speed of 130kmh (80 mph), other half in town... So that is average of 8.2 liters/100km. Dis is showing 8.0. So that is 34.4 MPG.

Than i did my second tank: 813 kilometres and added 63.3 liters in tank. 90% of that mileage was in town, just last 100km was on highway. When i do calculations i get 36.6 MPG, but this time dis2 was showing 39 MPG... So in town driving, range of my tank is ~850km ( ~ 530miles ), is this pretty much normal? In April i will go to 1.5k mile trip so i will see how much miles i can squeeze from tank with just highway driving. Is i ok to expect at least 100 miles more?

So after a little research online i found that cam timings can affect MPG so I checked my cam timings and Torsion value is exactly at 0 KW, and i did exhaust cam too ( mes block 15 ) Engine torque is 28nm and Fuel consumption is 0.4l. Than i disconnected my MAF sensor and car runs exactly the same, is this normal? Does that means my MAF is not working, and my consumption is bad due to this?

As i checked with 2 tanks, my dis readings are pretty much correct ( ± 0.2l ) so looking at this, exact same car ( year, engine, transmition ) that my friend owns is doing 10-15MPG more than me on current readings when doing 50mph, 70mph, 90mph... Its driving me crazy that all people around me with same/similar cars are doing noticeable better MPG than me. I mean i want to find out what is wrong with my car...

What i done so far:

  • New oil and filters
  • Cleaned MAF and checked by mechanist - he said all fine
  • Checked injectros on BOSCH diagnostics, specialist said readings are like new
  • Tried disconnecting MAF, no difference
  • Tomorrow i plan to clean EGR
  • No CEL or any errors on Vagcom related to this
  • Tyre pressure fine

Any ideas? Is there any logs that i can do using vagcom that can help to diagnose the issue?

If the car is driving the same with or without the MAF then I suspect that there is an issue there. Do some logs with VAG-COM on MAF and see what it's showing. Should be around 250mg/str at idle if the EGR is working .
Has the car got a performance air filther that needs oiling such as a K and N as these can cause issues with MAF's if over oiled.

Karl.

My fuel economy is like yours pal and it's gonna clean egr this weekend see if that improves but to be honest the mpg isn't a million miles away from what is stated in reviews so if ya mate is getting 80mpg he must be driving like my grandad in my opinion

Gonna do some MAF readings and log according to this ross-tech guide and will come back with results here. I have no performance filters, everything is stock.

Those 80mpg readings are just current consumption on DIS at the speed of 50mph, its not an average of some mileage. We did testing on highway, driving few miles distances at the speeds of 50mph,60mph,75mph and 85mph and on all speeds hes readings are much lower than mine.

That seem hard to believe I'm not disputing your claims I just don't think the car in question if it's a sline tdi like mine could return figures like that but if he is then good look to him

Here it is, im sorry i missed this reading in first post or maybe converted it bad:

80kmh = 50mph - 3.9 l/100km = 72 mpg

100kmh = 62mph - 4.8 l/100km = 58.8 mpg

120kmh = 74mph - 5.2 l/100km = 54 mpg

140kmh = 86mph - 6.5l/100km = 43.4 mpg

I dont have my video, but on my readings are :

120kmh - 7.5l = 37.6 mpg
140kmh - 8.8l = 32 mpg

So when we compare hes car is going 86mph and consuming like my car doing 60mph... This is huge difference for me. And on top of that i did my measurements when temperature was like 20 degrees more...

Your car is an automatic,I assumed when you were quoting those figures it was a manual. Has your friend actually checked how accurate the trip computer readings are on his car, Has your friends car been mapped or tweaked?.
Lots of people fit these really cheap tuning boxes

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TDI-Tunin...ts=Car+Make:Audi|Model:A4&hash=item259f06f450

They are just a resistor that fools the fuel temperature sensor this gives a small improvement to performance and also messes with the calibration on the trip computer. Easy to spot on diagnostics the fuel temperature reading will be well over 100 degrees C.
Carry on and check the MAF though you should definately get a difference with it disconnected.
Unless the remap that was on the car was done by somebody who doesn't know what they are doing fuel economy shouldn't be any worse unless you are hoofing all around the place.

My friends car is same as mine, BLB engine, CVT Gearbox, 2.0 TDI Avant.

Mine was tuned and i thought that was the problem so the guy just removed tuning. Not sure did he flashed stock, but it was not the same guy who did tuning on first place, because i bought car like that.
