Hi,

Just moved from long term petrol straight 6 BMW ownership to a sport back a3 s line, with an 07 plate. So far loving the torque, great handling in the twisties too, higher mileage has sent me down the derv route, so fingers crossed this one is as reliable as my BMW's!

Forums great BTW, already know how to add an armrest! Just have a couple of Q's for you knowledgeable folk.

Firstly I get a small whiff of fuel in the cabin, I think its more noticeable when stationary, could I need a new pollen filter, or something more sinister?

Secondly, having put the car through its paces this weekend, I've noticed quite a drone in 6th gear when accelerating between 70 and 80. It only happens in this situation, I've tried to replicate it in other gears at similar load/speed, but nothing doing. Wondered if this might be just normal engine noise, or again something more serious. Otherwise the car seems to pull well in all gears.

Any pointers would be well received.

Thanks
Neil

Hey mate, glad to have you here with us Audi fans! :)

For the first question, I don't think it is polen filter as I haven't changed mine in years and don't have smell of fuel in the cabin. I would check the pipes for leaks.

As for the second question, can't be of any help either since this does not happen to my car, but at least I bumped your topic so more people can notice it.

For your second question-it could be your prop shaft for the rear wheels!

I had the same drone noise in my a3 Quattro 170 and had it replaced. Noise now gone. Not sure if it does any harm thought if you don't replace it...

Thanks chaps!

After a bit of googling, and this forum - I think i tend to agree that it's the prop shaft - although hoping it is the rear damper rather than the whole prop shaft!

Will get my local indie to have a look into the smell, if anyone can direct me to the best place to look, I'll take a look myself before it goes in?

I bought my 170 a3 quattro 5dr sportback 2007 a few weeks ago. Dont mind answering any questions. I think my a3 does the same in 6th between 70 to 80. Ill check tomorrow. So far ive had quite a few problems but fingers crossed all is good now

  • Haldex controller failed due to ingress of salty water - cost me £150 to get it refurbed
  • Battery replacement - £90
  • Rear washer hose burst soaking the entire boot control module - £200 for a new latch, control module and labour
I hope I dont get any more nasty surprises lol.
