Been thinking about it for a while, niggling away, and eventually decided to just do it!

It needs a few minor niggles sorting out, the thermostats are broken (common issue) which causes the engine to run cool and stops the DPF regenerating. Also the Glow Plugs have failed, so i'll give it a good service and hopefully sort it all out pretty quickly. The other issue is the seat is ****** uncomfy and isnt agreeing with my bad back, so will need to do something about that too.

It will be replacing my saloon, which i'll be breaking for parts as theres too many bits wrong with it to make it worthwhile selling. Will stick up a listing for the saloon bits in the next few days.

I think the e46 was the last 3 series to have swirl flaps. Afaik

Lovely motor mate, only ever driven the 3.0 petrol. Heard the Ds are insanely torquey

It does have the swirl flaps. They redesigned them for the E90, and they are less prone to imploding, however i will be deleting them to be on the safe side, will do that when i strip the top off to get at the glow plugs. Need to sort out a list of all the bits i need, and then spend a day sorting it all out.

yeh i noticed oil all over the side of the engine underneath the inlet manifold, so its likely they're leaking as you suggest.

Quick pic of the interior:

It was the interior that really drew me to the car. "Rust Brown" Merino Leather. Its very marmite, but i've always had a draw towards brown leather interiors so long as its not TOO brown, and i'd seen the brown interior on A4 was posted up on here a few weeks ago reminded me how much i liked it. This has the brown leather seats and door trims but everything else inside is black, perfect! The dash trims are really nice too, its called "anthracite birch" some sort of special order color, thats almost black at first glance, but when you look its a very dark charcoal woodgrain effect. Slightly annoying that the seats aggravate my back so much, not sure what i can do about that just yet.

Also has Xenon lights, all important manual transmission and all the usual modern bits like cruise control and auto wipers etc.

Lovely car! I've been thinking about replacing altea with one of these for a while now. Just can't decide on saloon, coupe or touring! They all look lovely.

Good choice. During my stint flogging Bimmers I used to relish when I had an enquiry on one of these; customers were rather surprised by what they could do. My only gripe was that they looked better on the inside than the outside. That said, black and M-Sport made for a bit of a transformation.

So: vulture time: Does your dead A4 have an A/C compressor in GWO, and / or a flashable ECU which could provide a shortcut for me in my upcoming exploits? Always looking for an opportunity to cheat...

yeh i was looking at the coupe initially, but decided after much looking that i actually preferred the shape of the saloon in this generation. The A5 looks much nicer than the E92, but the A5's are still too expensive. They're hard cars to find though. You start with thousands of E90's but filter it down to a manual 3.0D and suddenly theres only about 20 for sale in the whole country. I also refuse to buy a silver car which further limits the choice.

JBH: its got eibach pro-kit springs and dampers on it. I'll probably swap the dampers over onto my avant, as its got used RS4 ones on it. So there will be a set of eibach springs and RS4 dampers up for grabs. Ping me a message if your fancying them :p

No AC compressor and no flashable ECU, sorry!

My mate Gordon was the same when he was looking for a D3 it needed to be manual and silver... he finally found one over in a dealers in fife that he bought.
he did look at a few 330D's but was adamant he wanted the D3 over the 330D. for a breathed on 320D the thing is pretty bonkers..

Did he get the Single turbo D3 or the later twin turbo one?

My brothers got a E91 320d and hes just bought the Turbo and injectors from the early single turbo D3 to upgrade his, hes hoping for about 250hp once its all fitted up and mapped.

Looks nice. The saloon and touring are my favourite shape in these. My old man had a 335d coupe and I was not a fan of the shape. I quite like the interior. I always only liked black leather until I was in Italy and noticed all the tan and brown leather people have over there. It will be a nice change from all the A4s.

Yeh i'm a "black interior guy". Dislike white or beige interiors as much as i hate silver cars and chrome. But the brown just struck a chord. I'd have loved a 335d, but they only come in Auto which is a deal breaker.

Yeh that was sorta the driving force behind the change, i've got 3 B5's, had them for yonks, and while i still like the B5 i wanted a bit of variety. The Avant will hopefully get some love this year. Its booked into the bodyshop next week to get some bits tidied up

Very nice motor mate, wasn't expecting a bmw when the pic first loaded ;) my brother has a 730d which I presume has the same 3.0d engine and even for a big car it feels very torquey without being jerky, what Im trying to say is the power delivery is really smooth :)

yeh i've not really explored its power too much yet, with it not warming up properly and not regenerating the DPF i dont want to push my luck and end up breaking it :p One thing i've found is the throttle is very linear which is actually really nice. Its not like some diesels where a knats whisker on the throttle pedal has it taking off at warp speed. As such its very easy to drive it smoothly.
