Quick question regarding tracking please. Because I fitted lowered suspension does that alter the tracking set up? Basically do the manufacturers figures still apply regardless of suspension height?

Maybe I need to clarify, I know when we replace certain parts the tracking needs resetting. Someone told me that because I have fitted lowered suspension the standard settings no longer apply.

If you've lowered it there is a good chance the camber and toe measurements will need adjusting to suit the new lower stance.

If you've lowered your car you deffo need it tracking .. If you mess with any part of the suspension you will need it tracking

I know that mate, whenever you replace a suspension related part it needs re-tracking. A chap told me that because it is now lowered a different set up is needed rather than the standard Audi figures.

Go as close to original settings if you have std wheels and don't need to clear arches etc.
You may not have the adjustment if you are too low, tire wear will be evident if you are out along with steering feel.

You made need camber/caster resetting but no reason why it should affect tracking as the wheel center has not changed, the rack is mounted to the cross member lowering a car does not affect the cross member and its impossible for tracking to go out as it would have to physically stretch your track control arms

Its all about the Ackermann angle.

Well tbh I thought that lowering the car with new suspension all round would require a tracking check and probable adjustment, obviously! But when a mechanic told me it would need different settings I couldn't see where he was coming from.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

To get the correct settings BakPak you need to google Ackermann steering geometry , it shows you how to work out camber/caster tracking etc , not many tyre monkeys or mechanics can do this nowadays , its proper mechanically engineering and nobody teaches it anymore, proper mechanics are few and far between now.:( The only ppl that do this anymore are hotrodders and serious kit car builders.

Would Kwik-Fit monkeys know? I wouldn't trust the children at Halfords. I'll google the Ackerman site you mentioned this afternoon dude.

Get it on a hunters machine. the machine will tell if its out...it will give you a before and after report aswel...very high tech machine.well worth it.ill be doing mine soon. place in dudley i go Aline something or other and that is all they do,proper specialists.

Here http://www.alineyourcar.co.uk/

Once your tyre starts to wear it wears from that point so even if you get tracking done your tyre will still wear

I had a good look at the tyres this morning. All four are wearing the same with the outer tyre tread approx 1mm less than the inside tread. The outer edge on all tyres has that slight "feathered" effect.

how old are the tyres?
take it to that place he will tell you what will need and prob not charge you until he sets it,ring him.
sounds like normal wear to me.yours a quattro?

Fitted Bridgestone's last year, I guess they've done 5000 miles or so. The car drives fine, can't fault it, I'm just a bit concerned how the tyres are wearing. I don't really want to drive to Dudley if I can help it! Thinking of somewhere in Telford.

yeah thats not bad for living in telford, all roundabouts ect...i dont know anywhere really that just specialise in tracking. DO NOT GO TO A KWIK FIT go somewhere that has the Hunter machine. but if you find one it will be alot more than Aline i will guarentee it.
i went to my bros work in shrewsbury Furrows with my vxr, with family discount was £90!

Well dude as it happens I rang Kwik-Fit and they chap couldn't / wouldn't give me a firm price but said it might be £80. I'll ring that place tomorrow mate in Dudley, it's only 20 miles. Thanks for the advice!

A full reset is £60. and you just turn up and wait,no booking ect.
good luck ill be going soon too, once ive found my clunking noise and had some new tyres and b5 perches lol

Ok! So you go off & get a fancy 4 wheel alignment check done, where's the adjustment, apart from track-rod-ends??
Did see some special upper arms, that you can change the length somewhere!

You cant adjust worn ******** bushes hence the check. so go to kwik fit get them to adjust your front track rods with new tyres, and then still see the same wear.???

I'm just saying there's nothing to adjust on a A4. On my Saab 900, you could adjust the camber/castor by adding or removing shims. I'm not advocating Kwik Fit for anything!

for tracking 99% of people automatically go to them?
