Hello, one of my first proper posts on the forums and I'm here to ask something already. Basically, I'm in a dilemma between the 1.9 TDI (08/58) 5dr Sportback variant in comparison to the 1.4 TFSI S Line (09/09) 3dr. Both cars are fairly close to my house and I'm looking to purchase whichever one I can work out is suitable for me within the next week. The reason I'm torn between these two cars is simply because there is a 10,000 mileage gap and £1400 between their prices. As guessable the S-Line is the more expensive option with the more miles. The miles on 1.4 TFSI are around 69,000 where as the 1.9TDI has about 58,900 on it. If we take into consideration the spec difference, I would much rather the S-Line but the whole idea of the 1.4 having a high mileage is somewhat putting me off taking the plunge. I'm young and don't plan on doing many miles on the motorway personally apart from the odd trip up and down the country every couple of months. Would it be risky going for a 1.4 with close to 70,000 miles or should I just play safe and take the 1.9TDI option? The 1.9TDI has had the timing belt service where as the 1.4 hasn't.

Any help is much appreciated!

I'd go for the 1.9TDi if it is the higher spec and has had the cam belt service done.

I must say, however, I am biased towards diesels because I prefer the drive of a diesel compared to a petrol engine.

Also, the 1.9TDi can make some pretty useful power with relatively cheap and easy to come-by mods...for example, air intake/exhaust and a remap or a remap alone will see you to the best part of 140BHP from 105.

Well, the 1.9 is the lower spec I should say. It's the 1.9 TDI Sport Sportback 58 plate with the facelift. Personally, I'm not really wanting to touch the car mechanically and would most likely be looking at running it stock with no modifications as I don't really trust any tweaks. How risky is it, would you say to buy a 1.4 TFSI with near to 70k on the clock? Any ideas on what I should be looking out for and if anything will need replaced in the near future on a car with this mileage and engine?

70,000 miles is not high, I wouldn't be worried about that sort of mileage, but if the timing belt is due you should factor that in (it's around £400 iirc).

I'd personally take the 1.4 given what you have said, it's the faster car, and for town driving will probably return better economy than the diesel.

Oh, sorry, I didn't realise the TFSi was the higher spec...go for that then. 70,000 miles is nothing for either engine...

Deffo. go for the 1.4 tsi. If you don,t plan on doing high miles then the 1.4 is best.s line spec cars look better than the sport spec.:thumbs up:

Seriously? I don't know how you can say that. Prefer the economy, sure. Prefer the lower tax, ok. Prefer the torque, fine. Prefer the noise, lack of power band? Never.
Don't get me wrong, diesels have their benefits but as a pure driving experience, petrol engines are SO much nicer.

Before you shoot me down, I've had plenty of both (and have several of both on my drive right now).

O.P. buy on condition, spec and history first and foremost. Consider if you will do a lot of short journey ( < 8 miles) or mostly longer journey. Short trips, town driving do not suit modern diesels, especially if they have DPFs.

I can't shoot you down...everyone is allowed to have their own opinion and preferences buddy!

Erm..I don't know. I'm 25, my first car was a 1.0L Yaris, second car was a 2.0D4d (diesel) Corolla and now I have my black edition A3.

I'll never ever get bored of how it goes uphill when I put it into manual mode, in 3rd gear and plant it, and living in West Yorkshire there are plenty of hills to do that on lol!

I don't doubt that something like a S3 would do that equally as well, if not better. The reason I can't buy a 8P S3 or RS3 is because I'm one of those people not too bothered about the look of my car for me its all about the interior. I can't get my head around buying a different car and getting the same interior.

I guess the lazy nature of a diesel is pretty suited to my laid back personality?

End of thought-fart lol.

They are great cars don't get me wrong. I have a TFSI and that's plenty of power for me on this chassis, I wanted a quattro but couldn't find one close enough to my budget and S3 was way out.
I've not driven the 1.4 TFSI but I'd imagine it pulls pretty well the turbo lag on mine is surprisingly little. I changed it from a 140 bhp 2.0 Golf GTD and the lag on that was quite perceptible.

On the diesel versus petrol debate, get a ride in a 3+ litre flat six and listen to that as you pull through 5-6k revs and tell me you prefer diesel better ;) If you were closer to me (in Herts) I'd take you for a ride in mine.... :)

Sorry to the OP for disappearing wildly off topic.... :audibash:

Is the mark 5 R32 a flat 6? I think its a V6 but, mate, the guy at bottom of my street has one that thing sounds a-may-zinggg lol...!

Not being a tw@t but mine is a common rail 170bhp and the factory map feels much smoother than the 140 engines, they have a noticeable nothing, nothing, everything, nothing power delivery. Mine is smooth up to 4,000rpm, 4-4500 nothing there

R32 is a v6. BMW straight sixes sound pretty good bur nothing I've driven compares to the flat six. There's only one manufacturer using them, also part of the vag group. Let you figure out who.

Do they have the controlling stake in the vag group 51% I believe.

Okay so the 1.9 TDI Sport sold the next day so that went straight out the question haha. Wasn't really too keen on it deep down anyway as it had beige coloured cloth interior with a grey dashboard, looked awful imho but the price was very attractive for what it was. Brings me back to the 1.4TFSI but the mileage thing is still playing in my mind. I've never bought a car which such mileage but at this price, I believe it's the best I find I think. The only other option I have is to get an 07 plate 2.0 TDI 140 S line which is £1000 cheaper but doesn't have that many extras on it. Oh, and the TFSI is a chain driven engine so won't need a change if I'm right in saying?

If it has fsh 70000 miles is nothing for a modern day engine

^^^ 70k is nothing these days as long as it's been serviced properly. At 6 years old average mileage is 60k anyway, 70k is perfectly normal. Anyway what sort of mileage are you planning to put on it?
