Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has this, and more importantly if anyone has used it?

I purchased this alloy cover as I understood it would be hard to repair diamond cut alloys - 5 arm rotor on the black edition, this was pretty much how it was sold to me and for piece of mind £300 wasn't bad for 3yrs.

Sadly, 10 months in and I use the car for the first time this year and hit a kurb, half the wheel :whistle2:

Wheel 2 Wheel 3 Wheel 4

I call up to make a claim and all of a sudden it becomes clear (this could just be my ignorance), this is not an Audi product, its managed by Aviva Insurance? They have now put me in touch with someone called Car Care Plan to carry out the repair itself - 5 week wait. In addition you read the documents and then I start to see things like "we can repair but the finish will not be the same as the original", and "if we cannot repair we contribute £150 towards a new wheel" of course Audi charge near £550 for a single alloy!

So in short, has anyone experienced a repair on one of these wheels, and if so how was it?
I know its early days but I must admit I'm a little annoyed at the whole thing, I suppose like any insurance policy I should have questioned the ins and outs of it all!

We took out cover when first getting the car only to read small print that it didn't cover diamond polished wheels like rotors so fortunately managed to cancel policy and get full refund

My understanding is a good repair can make these look like new buy due to the finish can only be refinished a couple of times

I got the alloy wheel repair and paint/dent cover thrown in when I bought my S4 and was told at the time that it wouldn't cover diamond cut wheels, however I have used it to have 2 small paint chips repaired and will use the alloy cover on my winter wheels before I sell them.
A mate of mine has alloy cover from audi which does cover diamond cut wheels and he has already used it on one of his rotors, the result was excellent.

Thanks very much for the replies all!

I called Car Care Plan on your advice and confirmed that they cannot repair Diamond Cut Alloys to the same finish, they will try and repair but not on a machine. Called up Audi UK who in turn contacted my local dealer! The dealer has told me to let the repair go ahead and see how it comes out, if I'm not happy they have agreed to fully refund the Alloy policy of £300, agreeing that the policy has been mis-sold!

For anyone looking to purchase this Alloy insurance from Audi, then check it covers your alloys! :)

I work for elite wheel repair in Leeds and we re polish these wheels on a regular basis. You never repair them to the exact finish but we do a pretty good job of replicating it on the machine.
But we charge 50 + vat per wheel, so its a dam site cheaper than the insurance. We also use etching lacquer which doesn't peel or corrode.

Have you ever heard of an insurance company not making a profit?
Lots of fat cats living of people paying for a product they never use.

So Audi will refund you the £300 for the mis sold policy, but you'll be left with a wheel your not happy with. :audibash:
Beware that wheel will annoy the hell out of you everytime you look at it as it's not right.
You'll end up forking out to get the other 3 wheels done the same as the repaired one, more ££££££'s. :(

To be honest, the company could do a great job and I won't need to worry, but its funny how even after submitting the pictures they never mentioned anything about the repairs that they can/can't carry out until I questioned it - as a result of the help/advice here :)

Will see how it goes, worse case scenario I get it done again by someone that can do it and pay for it out of the refund I'll get from Audi. Or worse case still.... I buy a new wheel!? :dejection:

I have the same wheels and the same issue as the wife hit the front wheel. Can you please put up a picture of the wheel once its been repaired so i can see if i should even bother trying to get it fixed or go back to audi and put my case to them.

Thanks

17th April its being done, will take some pictures of the outcome (good or bad) and post them so you can see.

i have a rotor referbed from a local body shop who my dealer uses and they are a approved audi bodyshop.
they made a right hash of my wheel they had 2 go's at getting the colour correct and still they can't. I've given up on it now and bought a new wheel. so £600 new wheel and £for the repair. i has pig sick of all there B**lsh*t about how they can understand why the colur is so wrong. and then they have machined it that much that the machined edge is the same height as the spoke and uneven.

i personally would never get a another rotor referbed.

Thanks, certainly worth knowing just in case thats the route I need to go down. With a refund it will cost me £46 so still not that bad.... will let you know how it goes on the repair front, and if not great will let you know how Audi react to my complaint ;)

Here we go, alloy repair carried out and the results are here:

Overall a good job, compared to what they were like this is a 99% improvement! The only bits I'm not happy with is where you can see what look like little dents / filler marks. Also on the lipped edges there is some silver showing now, like it has been filed away slightly - not sure how to explain but one picture shows this clearer.

I am fussy about my car looking pristine which doesn't help, but keeping in mind that I bought this policy based on a Diamond Repair which they cannot honor I am going to ask Audi to refund as agreed, on the basis I can get a general alloy repair almost anywhere locally.

Thought you might like to see the results though :)

Hi

Personally i don't like it, it's completely different to all the other wheels and it will grind on me every time i wash or look at the wheel. they don't look the same when painted.
thats just my personal opinion.

Looks like it just isn't a diamond cut wheel any more. I think that would annoy me really fast, and I'm normally not remotely fussy.

Send the pics to Platinum Alloys, and see what they suggest. But yes, you've been mis-sold that policy for sure!

Thanks both for the feedback. I agree with both points, knowing its there and I can easily identify the difference it does grate on me which is just one of a few reasons I will be visiting Audi this weekend for the refund.

I would contemplate on a new wheel or second repair but I plan on selling it to make way for the new model, especially with barely any mileage on it I want to get as much as I can now for it. There you go, problem sold, curb your wheel - just buy a new car!

I had diamond cut wheels on my brabus, MB curbed two of them. They were not keen on splashing out £3000 so asked if they could try a repair. I spoke to Brabus and they said it would be a one in a million chance of them getting it right. You would have to use the same tool at the same draw speed and rotation speed. I let them try... It was rubbish, not even close to the others. Two new wheels it was, went in for a free paint cost them £3250 they scuffed a tire too.

Personally I think the diamond cut on these wheels are coated with a tinted lacquer. The finish of the diamond cut is too dull and not the same as fresh cut or sanded alloy.
It's probably applied to the whole wheel as the final finish which dulls everything down to the matt style rather the gloss/shiny.

I know that wheels on my other car, that I have had refurbished in anthracite, use a tinted rather then clear lacquer as I chipped some off by heavy handed removal of the centre cap.

£300 is also a bit steep for an insurance policy. It cost me just under that to get 4 8x18 speedines refurbished and the final finish was better then when they were new.

Mercedes have a similar policy, but they indicated diamond cut alloys are difficult to repair so they just replace them with new. I can see their point because one of my alloys had a very minor scratch before I bought it and they agreed to repair. They did a good job, but that section is now slightly discoloured.
