TQS track car project - extremely slow progress

I think your still missing my point with the engine. If you blow up a forged engine, your throwing thousands of pounds down the drain. If you blow up a stock motor, your out 200quid and a weekend to change it. Hence my point is simple, leave the engine well alone. If you want to bolt on a bigger turbo, then sure, do so, but select wisely and map it such that your not going to be snapping rods for fun. The absolute most i would be doing, is fitting some rods.

My track car is an S4 shell with a 1.8T in it. Theres no way i'd be refitting a 2.7T even if i was given one for free. Its far too heavy, far too complicated and expensive to maintain, and ofcourse theres more of everything to go wrong as well!

I agree with the above. Some of the bills the S4/RS4 guys have is crazy. I love the sound and the thought of the 2.7TT but the complexity of the engine would put me off. I like how there is a bit of room about the 1.8T and you can change a turbo without removing the engine. Also you can get to most of the hoses without removing too much of the engine.

If I was to go for more power I would be going for one of these TFSI turbos or a Garrett with a new manifold etc and bung in some uprated rods. There have been a couple guys on here that have had enough trouble with maps and engines going and it could become more hassle than it’s worth if you try to do too much.

Rods and big turbo kit and if the engine blows you can work out what went wrong and tweak from there. But hopefully that would never happen if it’s mapped conservatively.

Ok. Let me explain why I had thoughts about swapping a 2.7 in.
Power increase is not on cards on 1.8t for this year.

Gearbox in my car isn't great. First gear whines and 3rd pops out once in a while.
With track driving I was thinking for a while that I would want to swap a 6 speed instead, when the 5 speed dies.
Was looking at srs and the prices that all the stuff goes for, I would be looking at well over £700 for a surgery like that. Which is pretty much what I paid for the A4 in the first place. So wasn't so keen on that.

Few days ago I talked to Michael from srs, because I knew he had them sitting in his spare S4.
Yesterday, I ended up buying this for £500:

It is a stripped, rear side panel damaged facelift S4. 100k miles with full service history.
It has no interior other than steering wheel and dash. Michael removed the front end for his damaged S4.
What it does have is gearbox, driveshafts, prop, diff and front subframe, which is pretty much all what I need for a swap.
Most of other panels, doors, bonnet, side skirts and wings aren't damaged at all and it sits on 18" nuvolari style wheels.

It also has this:

If I sell the engine and few other bits, I should be not far off from having the gearbox swap for free.

Hmm. The box is about 30kgs heavier than the 5 speed, they almost all have synchro issues, and the gearing is really quite long. The short TQS gearing is far more sensible for track use IMO.

The 6 speed makes a great road box (assuming you can find one where the synchros arent knackered!) but i'm not convinced on a track car.

I guess it depends on the circuit your driving on as well, knockhill is quite tight, and benefits from the close gearing, perhaps other circuits would be fine with the longer box.

Its certainly a bargain for 500quid though either way. you'll turn a profit on that no problem. I paid 600 for a 2.8 quattro for its gearbox and manage to break even on that, so you shouldnt have an issue with a £500 S4!

Problem with 5 speed boxes is that they don't come for sale too often from tqs or even from 2.8q. I can get synchros reconditioned by steve if it is bad or get another one in the future which, will be an easy swap with the rest of bits already on the car. I did read about the difference in gear ratios and decided that I can live with it.

yeh your right, i ended up buying that 2.8Q as i couldnt find a box for sale anywhere :p

Hopefully it'll be fine!

Went to see these guys today

Waiting

For free fitting of this

Not sure how many of you have no interior, but it sounds pretty awesome in mine :) A bit on a loud side at 3krpm, so motorway cruise at 65 :)

Yeah if the rear seats are down in my car its pretty loud but not all that bad when there up. Sounds really loud if the boots open as i found out taking some stuff to the tip.

How much did they charge for the system if you dont mind me asking ? Suppose its worth paying that little bit more for the product than paying less to fit it on a drive on the cold *** concrete lol

It was standard milltek price. Same as ebay one. Paid £3 extra because they had to put some new bolts on downpipe. I was going to order one and fit it myself, but have rotator cuff tear, so can't even lift a cup of tea right now. Plus it's freezing. It took them quite a bit of time as well. They had an offer in January for free exhaust fitting, so thought I'll give it a go. Driving back through snake pass was fun!

Yeah doing it in situ even on a ramp can be tricky were the down pipe meets the cat theres limited access, mow post some pis of them shiney new tailpipes haha

Was dark when I got home. Will take some tomorrow :)

So I had a look at my exhaust and it seems to sit a bit low for my liking. Can't find any pic with old exhaust to see if it was the same. Is that normal height?

The factory system is sort of squashed flat along the middle of the car, to enable them to tuck it up as high as possible. Aftermarket stuff is both larger in diameter, and isnt squashed, so inevitably hangs lower.

Bradderz milltek sits nicely. Is it because of s4 bumper?

if its just that its pulled across to one side, try taking the rear left exhaust mount off, rotate it 180 degrees and refit it. If its on backwards it pulls the exhaust over to one side.

Brads has larger tips by the looks of it, which is why it fills the cutout better.

Will have a look at the mount when it gets warmer. Tail pipes are 80mm on mine. Just measured a4 and s4 bumpers and both are the same height.

This is how the stock exhaust was sitting.

Is it possible that the rubber hanger on back box isn't original and is too long?

I will order a new hanger because the one on the car is rusted. £6 on ebay together with rubber bit.

You might need to adjust the centre section and non res pipe to pull the exhaust up some loosen all the hangers, adjust the system get it centre then tighten up the clamps then the hangers thats what i did.

A bit fed up of constant rain or snow, finally had an hour of light and normal weather after work. So grabbed the brush and sandpaper and cleaned up the S4 rear calipers and carriers. Hopefully will have a chance to paint them tomorrow.

Also, i will be taking the nuvolari style wheels off the S4 and will be using them on the track. Will need to repaint them and was thinking white. But, was passing next to specialist paints on Saturday and

Decisions decisions...

Cheap and cheerful is the order of the day here.

Race brake pads arent wheel friendly, your pretty paint job will get ruined in no time!

My green ones need repainted in a more subtle color, probably titanium or gunmetal :)

Yeah. I've noticed already that the yellow pads aren't very nice on wheels. That's the reason why I don't want to have genuine avus on the track. But then, I can't stand wheels with peeling off paint :) The avus I have on now are gunmetal, and I think just too dark. So white or something bright for the track on the nuvolaris :)

Calipers painted today.
Any idea if I can get a seal kit for these?
Want to change one of the dust sleeves.

Yeah order them from TPS bout £20 and does both calipers iirc

There abit fiddly to do just grease the seating on the piston for the dust cover and the piston seal so the piston just moves and not the seal/cover

Is it the same kit for FL S4 and TQS calipers?

No as the pistons a different size iirc

Just give them a reg for a facelift S4 (your breaker) maybe and that should do it.

Are you fitting just the 265mm discs or doing the 'trig' mod and 300mm B6 discs ??

I'm doing the 300mm mod. Was trying to find adapters for a long time and had no luck. My gf was sent to US from work last month and I managed to order them from 034. She is back Monday, and so are the adapters ;)

Not sure what length and fittings I will need on hoses though.

Yeah. I can find that it is either 350 or 400mm hose with a banjo on caliper side. Doesn't say what size though. I am pretty sure that it is 12mm banjo but will need to double check. @Bradderz_1988 did you have yours done custom or found something off the shelf that fits?

I've found quite a few threads but not this one. So you have split them in to two pieces?

If I go one piece, I will need 380mm hose with m10 20° banjo on the caliper side and straight female m10 on the other.

Yeah think thats correct but i think i ordered smaller length than 380mm will try find my invoice today see if its on there !

I ordered from here - http://www.brake-lines.co.uk/create-your-custom-brake-hose.html

Got them like this i added the fixing points just to try and secure them abit and stop them maybe rubbing something so i zip tied them to the rear toe arm. May tidy them up when the rear subframe comes off.

Yeah, I've seen you posted it in another thread. Thanks.

Spacers arrived today :)
