Hi guys,

I am a long time reader firs time poster and I was wondering if anybody could help me with my poorly car!

A while ago I had a WARM START issue. The car would start fine from the cold, but if you went back to it after a little drive you would struggle to start it. Based on what I read on here I replaced the Coolant Temp Sensor (the green thing).

For quite a while this worked great, however recently a new issue cropped up. The car now really struggles during a COLD start. This has been much more evident this winter due to it being pretty nippy. In addition the temperature gauge on the dash isn't working.

My initial thought is that the car doesn't now how cold it is so it is giving it too much/too little petrol and therefore not starting properly, nor reporting a temperature?

Super grateful of any help!

Try replacing the air intake temperature sensor, I think I paid £11 from eBay for mine.

Try scan for fault codes. The air intake temp sensor is separate to the sensor that shows the outside temperature on the dash, so I'm not sure how those two issues could be related. When you say it doesn't work, what does it show? Have you just turned the screen off?

I had warm and cold start problems with my 1.8T, it always started, but RPM drop nearly to stall before ECU give it proper amount of throttle.
First I replaced CTS (seamed good for a few days), but after that I had to clean throttle body to make it start smooth always.
Anyway try first scanning for fault codes.

As the temp gauge in the dash is again messing up, I'd ask whether the coolant temp sensor was an original (OEM/Audi/VW) or from some other manufacturer. With sensors it is often the case that only the OEM/original parts are reliable and any other manufacturer's parts are very hit or miss. It could be that the one you replaced is knackered already. Temp gauge acting up is usually a strong sign of the CTS going crazy. However I think it can be checked through VCDS or even through the on board climate control diagnostic to see what temperature the ECU is reading.

EDIT: Either way start with VCDS. Could be a number of different sensors acting up ie. IAT sensor, crank sensor etc. or something completely else.

Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner. I didn't get an email alert!

I am going to plug in the VAG today and run the VCDS. sadly I only have the light version so I might have to do a bit of research in order to unscramble the codes.

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Fault_Codes will give you a bit more information, then if you need more information you can just google it. But post them here and I'm sure you'll get some help.

Scan the fault codes -> clear them -> go for a drive -> scan again and see what comes back

Hi guys,

So I installed the VAG COM and ran VCDS Lite and got the input as showed in the attached image.

This suggests this component isn't working correctly: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00537

But I have a few reservations. I am not sure the scan actually completed as I have the free unregistered version of VCDS (it stopped with an error about needing to register). Additionally, a quick google suggests that this fault wouldn't cause my symptoms.

So what do you guys think? I welcome all advice.

That seems like quite a serious problem. At some point your car has been running very lean, and the ecu can't adjust for it enough.

Do you have a rough idle at all? This would indicate some air leaks which could cause this issue. For starters I would get a smoke test done if possible.

There is a chance this could be related to your problem.

Can you explain how your car struggles to start. Does it turn over for a long time then fire up? Or does it start but stutter? Or something else?

Well you still have the CTS fault code. Clear the codes and then scan again after you have driven the car for a little bit. I would be more worried about the Lambda upper limit. Tbh I have no experience with that fault code so hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge chimes in. But clear the codes, see if the CTS fault comes back and then replace it with a genuine part if it does.

Yea I will do.

As a side note, where would you advise getting hold of the part?

GSF have it online for £15 or £30 (http://www.gsfcarparts.com/929vg0170) Black in the picture but Green in person.

or eBay has it for £6: (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEAT-TOLE...612?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4ac66cf264)

I replaced mine twice since bought my car. First one was OEM (at least it looked identical to one that was on car), but it last few days ~200km... It was cheep (around 12 eur) so I decide to buy new one instead of returning it.
Second one was manufactured by BERU and I'm still using it.

PS
Part number for 1.8T (a believe you need the same) is: 059 919 501A

To give everyone an update I replaced the CTS and the car now starts how it should.

I am going to clear the codes and give it a spin and see if it has any more issues, but right now she is running like a dream.

Sadly I ran into the back of a Merc last week and I am now being charged a fortune for the repairs.
