Opinions on this Quattro TDI please?

Oh my GOD!! I copy the link and paste it in here, I don't know where this is going wrong?

(For us to help you giving opinions we need more specific info on the car such as:- (sorry I cant get any of the links for work btw)
Year of car
Horse power
Any things that are mentioned or already repaired.
EXACT mileages of services performed & by main dealer or other garage
.

Dependent on model, you could be looking at issues with that mileage like:-
Turbo need replacing

Inlet manifold needing replacing

Injectors needing replacing

Diesel particulate filter needing replacing or cleaning out

Wheel bearings being worn

Cambelt kit / water pump needing replacing

Battery

Possibility of cracked or oval shaped wheels (regularly occurs on 17" & 18" wheels with sport / s-line trim due to harder & lower springs & uprated shocks)

Stone chipping / corrosion on front end

Possibility of con-rods snapping (mainly affects 1.9 tdis)

Oil pump drives / chains snapping (this has potential to kill engine & turbo!)

Being a Quattro (specifics on invoices if you go to look at it) when last oil service was done on Haldex system

If its got a phone kit in it (may have been a rep mobile) I'd be looking at mileage & interval between services......some are on yearly service & some on time distance by inbuilt computer. The inbuilt computer can allow up to 19k between oil changes & this craps up egr system as oil degrades & prematurely wear turbo shaft bearing

Stuttery acceleration (usually start of egr valve on way out or tandem pump knackered)

These are main areas id be checking if I was to buy another but its engine size & horsepower specific.

The links work fine fella, it's just the way that auto trader works. Instead of clicking on the link guys just copy and paste the link into your browser

Ah, that's the link. Any more thoughts now you can see it guys? Basically I have up to £3750 to spend and want a diesel A3 and, ideally, want black or red (even though the one in the advert is grey, it just caught my eye!)

Thanks guys.

Thanks so much for that!!

Any more comments on the car? They said they want the asking price....but they alway do, I guess. I asked about the dual mass flywheel and they weeren't sure but the Cam belt was done on 90,000 so I guess is due again now?

You do right to worry about dual mass flywheel but pay plenty of attention to the turbo as well with that mileage! Turbos can start to whistle from 80k miles onwards & are a far more expensive part to replace. Turbo can suck broken impeller bits into engine & kill it!

Looking around a grand for a recon turbo & around £1400 for a new turbo (fitted). Subframe has to come off to replace turbo so its a big job!

Dual mass flywheel / clutch / release bearing can be replaced for around £700 at an independent garage.

What brilliant advice!! Thank you for that!! so, as I am now leaving behind my 1.9 non-PD days to have a 1.9 or 2.0 PD, any thoughts on 1.9 or 2.0?

Also, if the turbo does whistle on any A3 I see, is that a do-not-buy then?

Turbos should whistle slightly but not much mainly around max torque boosting at 2000 rpm. May whistle a little bit more if remapped. If you are getting a whistle just setting off & lots of smoke on start up it could be the shaft bearing that is worn & burning oil. May also be a boost leak but difficult to diagnose as a car purchase. If not sure walk away. Plenty out there to look at.

Old 1.9 tdi's used to be pretty bullet proof! The 90 / 110 / 130 bhp specs used to do massive mileages with not a lot more than regular oil changes. These were up to about 2003 or 2004 ish. Most of these would easily crack 200k mile pretty easily.

The race to save weight.....mainly due to road tax being linked to emissions has lead to most manufacturers replacing metals with plastics or using lighter alloyed metals to try to save weight / improve kerb weight & ultimately improve mpg. The trade off has been worse reliability. Unfortunately it seems that most modern diesels have their problems.........(not just VW group ones either may I add)

The new series of 1.9 tdi's (mainly the engine code BXE) can crack con rods on the pistons & kill the engine. It can throw the con rod (rod connected to piston if you aren't up on engines) through the side of the engine block & wreck the engine. See:-http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/bxe-engine.146231/

The 2.0 tdi seems to have more problems with the 170 bhp rather the 140 bhp. This post seems to point out the engine codes both best & worst of the 140 bhp engine codes:- http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=91299

I personally have a 170 bhp but if I was buying again I'd buy the 140 bhp & research the engine codes that have good reliability & those that don't! If id gone to look at one id check the log book for the engine code or the id plate on the car. No matter how good it was id walk away from those with problem engine codes!

Yes, you wait for it to chatter at idle. Then you replace the dual mass flywheel and stick a new clutch kit in for good measure.

I own a 140 and I think 170s are far more reliable.
Surprised you say that.....all the people I've spoken to say the Bosch kit on the 140 (injectors / ecu) are much better than the Siemens kit on the 170. We'll not even start with the agro I had with the DPF!!!

140s have injector, injector loom, cylinder head, turbo and flywheel problems. In my opinion having only injector problems is far better. :)
