Hi guys,

I've been looking for a new car and want to spend between £12-£15k.

Ideally a 2.0tdi, coupe with a back seat big enough for a beagle to sit on.

Torn between an A5 and a 320d coupe, I'm biased toward audi but have tried a 320d and it's hard to ignore!

What are your opinions?

Thanks

Tom

For me personally, I think the A5 is the better looking machine, especially in S-Line trim, but the BMW has the edge on performance, handling and drive ability. What's important to you? How the car looks to your neighbours on your drive, or how it drives when you are behind the wheel? I personally find all modern BMWs ugly, they don't age very well.

Truth be told I came on here to be tempted into the audi,

I want both :)

Beemer sounds and goes better than the Audi but the interior is horrid unless you get a fairly new one.

Audi for me.

Beemers are notorious for battery drain & if you get one with the problem then nobody & i mean nobody will find the problem, ask me how i know, check it out on bimmerforums.co.uk.

I am personally put off by new cars, beemers, mercs and audi's are all riddled with problems. I would take the 2.0CR Tdi engine in the audi as that's the most reliable engine of them all although the mercedes 2.2 Cdi is a close contender. The bimmer 2.0 tdi engine is bad in comparison, timing chain is at the back, they suffer with overheating issues and cracked heads. As with every CR, run it on anything else but fairy dust and replacement injectors will cost you a few grand to mend, they are not the user friendly cars they used to be a decade ago !
The audi CR engine is still cambelt driven and the oil pump drive is still an issue with high mileage so factor that into your payment plan...the other 2 marques don't have this little niggles but i have seen timing chains stretch with Longlife servicing !

I would second the comments on the BMW. I just got rid of my 520d due to a noisy timing chain and as mentioned they are known for snapping. It's really unfortunate that they have this reliability issue as they are otherwise a really nice car to drive. I've just switched to a 2012 A6, which I'm hoping doesn't cause me too many problems.

I was originally going to buy a 3.0TDI A6, but got so fed up with the expensive Audi repair bills, I now own this...

If I only had a choice of the two however, it would be Audi. Apart from bringing out new models, which aren't that great looking anyway, BMW haven't made any fundamental design changes for at least 10 years. It just seems like one facelift after another.

Put the dog in the back of whatever you buy with a proper dog guard, that way you'll be safer in the event of a nasty

It's no suprise, the bmw will be more fun to drive, much more fun.

The interior is horrible and dated, the A5 has a far better looking interior by miles.

I may get flamed for this but I think the e92 coupe has the edge on exterior looks over the A5, the A5 can look a bit bloated from some angles.
