Hi Guys,

Another problem with my A3. Brake pedal travel feels very gritty and squeaky. Only occurs when car is warm and during the initial 5% or top part of the pedal travel. Brake operation doesn't feel smooth at all.

Showed the Service Manager/Foreman, he felt the same thing, so they lubricated it. Felt ok for about a week, then it came back.
Went back to Audi Service, they said, they have another A3 with the same issue, but Audi doesn't have a fix for it. So basically, go away. :(

I'm very disappointed with Audi so far:

1. Turbo Charger noise/clip issue from the day I got car (Finally Fixed)
2. Gritty/Noisy Brake Pedal
3. Adaptive Cruise Trying to kill me!
4. Lane Assist sometimes trying to swerve OUT of the lane. (Happened 2 times on the same road)

After having many issues with 3 VWs and switching to Audi for a better experience, I've lost faith with both.
Does anyone have a trouble-free car these days??? IMO Audi and VW really need to focus on Quality Control and AfterSales Service.

I'm having the same problem with the brake pedal on my A3...did they ever manage to fix yours?

After three months of investigating and refusing to listen to my audi dealer telling me that the sound was normal it has since been discovered that the issue is with the brake servo. My 2013 A3 is less than a year old and is on its 4th servo. The first servo failed after 7000 miles, the 2nd within a week, the third was doa and the 4th servo has been in the car for two days. Audi technical are aware of the issue. Harold wood Audi discovered the fault. FYI I did not buy my car from Harold Wood. If you need anymore info let me know.

I had the same brake pedal issue with my A3 Sportback S-Tronic. Pedal creaked and groaned a lot - especially during the first few mm of travel. Raised the issues with Harold Wood Audi (incidentally) - who changed the brake servo. However the problem still seemed to persist.

Regardless, I have unfortunately had to return my vehicle to the dealer I purchased it from (as a rejection) due to persistent gearbox and electrical issues.

Seems like there could possibly be a batch of faulty servos going round.

My 4th seems ok so far lol :audibash:

I can't rember the build week but I picked it up in October 2013. I think I ordered it in June but can find out

Delivered October 2013, (MY2014).

Judging by Duckman's response, could be related to a dud-brake servo batch :(

Mine was also delivered in October.

I'm not so sure about a faulty batch of servos, as I've now had two replacements recently. So problem has been going on for a while. Interesting that both cars were received at same time...possible a fault with a batch vehicles?

Could well be a dodgy batch going round. My 4th servo is still working without any problems so far

Audi is now calling this normal. The matter has been escalated to Audi Germany. It will help our case if there are more people with the same problem. Please let us know!

I have this same problem - more noticeable in hot weather. bought the car sept 2013 - havent had a chance to get booked in yet.

Audi UK are fully aware that there is a problem.

Don't let your dealer fob you off.

Get them to contact Harold Wood Audi if they are unsure.

In this colder weather my A3 (delivered August 2014) has developed a noise/creaking in the first few mm of applying the brakes. Not a big issue as it doesn't affect the braking but annoying nevertheless. I guess it is the same as the rest of you. As this subject has gone quiet for some time I wondered whether there was any update from those affected. I'm away from home at the moment but will take it up with my dealer when I get back.

Hi,

It got to the stage that Chingford Audi bought the car back from me.

The final straw was when the clutch pedal started to make a speaking noise when changing gear.

The brake pedal started creaking again.

Contact Audi UK if you get no joy from your dealer.

What did it say? :D

Thanks for suggestion - I'll see what the dealer says first.

Audi Germany has been made aware of the issue and are apparently looking into it...

I think you might let your car checked by a mechanic rather than having a discussion here and wasting the time. No doubt it is good to share information but the car safety is the primary thing. Thanks

So, we have two A3's in our family both bought in December 2013, both with the same brake issue. By the sounds of it, this issue seems to be affecting only right hand drive A3's ?

Hi, same brake pedal issue with my A3 sportback manufactured in October 2013. Have escalated to Audi South Africa. Did you get any response from Audi Germany? Thanks,

Hi guys, I still have the same issue. My car has Adaptive Cruise Control.
Been to Audi dealer at least 5 times. They say its normal and LUBRICATE it, then tell me to go away. I am SOO sick of it, I've given up.

I don't know how these major manufacturers can get away with this. PREMIUM BRAND? Whatever...

PS, Im in Australia. Creaking Pedal from about 2 months of ownership.

I hate to say this, as I wish there were but there is no perfect car. (that kills me to say it)

Unless you have 200k for a Rolls Royce, which i'm sure we could still pick fault in.

Sorry I disagree - I've bought much "cheaper" brand new cars and not had a problem with a squeaky/gritty break pedal. It's uncomfortable and annoying to drive with particularly in rush-hour traffic which is anywhere between a 1-2 hour commute.

Thanks for posting - it's good to get an idea of how "widespread" this issue is. Our family have bought brand new Audi Q3's and A4's which have not had any issues. There is definitely a problem with this batch of A3 cars manufactured around this time. My cruise control (not adaptive) is definitely temperamental - sometimes I will be on the highway and it won't work until I stop the car and restart it which is obviously impossible when you're already en-route! However, I can almost live with that but this break pedal issue is unacceptable and I want answers. Good luck and I'll post if we get anywhere on this side of the world!!

Am in UK. Have mentioned to dealer but it's a creak and not a parts failure so have not made a big fuss; wet shoes on wet rubber pedals would creak in a similar way (though I have the Ali pedal caps).

Hi all, do you know if the S3 suffers from the same fault of the brake servo?
My experience: my S3 has 11500 km and, from some months, I experience a "sticky" brake pedal only if the brake force is lightly applied and at low speeds. In the very first part of the pedal travel, when I release it after a slight deleceration I feel that the pedal does not immediately come in place but tends to remain "glued" to my shoe...something like if you have a chewing-gum between the sole and the pedal lol.

Do you think it could address a brake servo fault?

Thanks

Hi,

I made an experiment today. I switched off the annoying "start-stop" thing. Well, no problem with the brake pedal.
My understanding of the problem so far could address an "incompatibility" between the start-stop and the brake servo.

Maybe (I underline MAYBE - from my poor knowledge of a brake servo works) the mechanism "does not like" when the engine stops while the brake is pressed (S-Tronic) and the absence of vacuum while the pedal is pressed. In fact I do not experience the problem after, say, a long highway journey but only during traffic commute where the (annoying) cycles of start-stops are intense. It could also explains why lot of users experienced the problem also after several changes of the brake servo device.

But I am trying to explain myself why I have no problem with the engine running at idle while the brake is depressed (start-stop OFF).

Another thing: when I release the pedal during a "start-stop" session and the engine starts, the pedal feels glued to the position where it was...with the engine running at idle it does not happen.

Hi all, I take it we are all driving right hand drive vehicles here? I am thinking that if this is only affecting right hand drive vehicles, then the brake servo is being impacted by its close proximity to the exhaust manifold, less than 5cm apart. (LHD vehicles should not be impacted due to the brake servo being located in a far "cooler" location on the right hand side of the engine bay). This heat soak from the exhaust could lead to a break down of the lubrication within the brake servo, which would then cause the gritty feeling and noise? The fix may be as simple as some heat insulation over the brake servo? Thoughts?

Hi Danilotto, what is the build date on your LHD S3, and what country are you in?

Do we have anyone with a 2014 onwards A3 having these problems? Or is just 2013 built vehicles that seem to have this issue?
