Hi guys, I bought an 8L S3 yesterday as Ive had a soft spot for them for around 10 years!
Its pretty much fully standard in Nogaro blue with the matching alcantara recaro's, with the exception of a set of eibach springs. Im not new to VAG cars but have never owned a 1.8T before - its taking some getting used to having owned a string of VR6's and PD130's i also own a C5 a6 final edition so the s3 is mainly for a fun car as such. Im hoping to put a few tuner bits on the car but keep it OEM+, so no huge FMIC chopped into the front bumper etc.

Ive got a few things id like to fit and id love a few suggestions of what works well with the car with regards to tuning and retrofitting items.

My current bucket list of mods id like to do include;

retrofit cruise control - is there a guide around?
RNS-E install (if possible, i have no idea if this was even offered on an 8L) Or double DIN alternative as it currently has a combined tape player and CD player and changer.
Forge 007P
badger5 TIP
High flow panel filter
De-cat back non res Milltek.
Brembo porsche 4pots (I had these to fit on my mulberry VR but never fitted them - anyone have a DIY / FAQ?)
RHZW-1 splits (again from my VR - would 225/45/17 work on a 17x8? Also Does running wider rear have any effect on the haldex setup?)
JL W3 10" sub & component speaker install
remap - what kind of figures should i be looking at with the above mods with probably an R-tech map?

First things first its getting clayed and detailed so i know the paintwork is protectected for winter (collinite 476)

Ill get some pics up once I've made a start - i doubt anyone wants to see an almost stock S3!

Sorry for all the questions - I'm keen to make a start but need a few pointers so i don't make any nob errors, especially on a 1.8T i know nothing about!

Cheers

Hello. Best colour.( I have one) they can be a money pit as I am currently finding out!

Most of your questions will be answered in the stickies at the top of the a3/s3 forum link it's got tuning guides FAQS the lot mate sounds a nice car

So yesterday was my first day off this month so i got busy giving the car a 'pre deep clean, clean'. Ive noticed a couple of bits that need paint in the usual places (tailgate plinth, roof rail and stone chips) so i wasn't going to begin stripping all the wax and polish off and building a fresh coat up to then have it all pulled of at the paintshop, plus my painter wouldn't be over the moon stopping it as he knows how much product goes on my cars! So i just gave it a clean so i could find all the imperfections.

post wash pics…

Nice motor, i love it when people go through the trouble to hide their reg plates and then its clearly showing in another photo, especially on ebay. :)

I didn't put the other pic up on instagram, but i love it when someone starts with a compliment with the agenda to poke fun, but poor understanding of english phrases makes them fall at the first hurdle……

I think they were 996 rears IIRC - anyone recommend somewhere to run porsche part numbers?

Im sorry, you obviously dont have a sense of humour. I am english by the way, so i do understand "english phrases"

Smile, its Christmas! :)

Looks nice, deffo go for a remap, standard car with stage one makes a big difference, also much better on fuel when driving sensibly, which I admit is hard to do in an S3.

One from last night after id been shooting some snow shots!

porsche rear brakes are no upgrade sadly fella :(

Like Daz said the porsche rears are a down grade on standard brakes due to piston sizes being smaller ,Sell them and get some Brembos from a LCR :)

I thought this may be the case, guess its the LCR route then!

Ive got an issue with the indicators when locking, unlocking and hazards - only the right hand side flashes, but under normal driving conditions the left indicators are fine. Could this be a relay issue or is it likely going to be something more costly?!

lcr brembos
boxster s /996 c fronts
996 turbo fronts all good

i have lcr with ferodo ds 3000 pads
very good!!

I had a similar indicator problem and it was the relay. The hazard switch in the dash contains the relay and is prone to sticking problems. A revised part was later sold by Audi and iirc cost about £30. Its simply plug in and replace. Not sure if it will fix your issue but try swapping with a working one (mate perhaps).

Cheers Daz, ill have to keep my eyes out, i don't suppose you know if the carriers are the same are they? Ive got some creation motorsport mounts fresh in the packet unused!

Theres an 8L in my local breakers yard - ill have to borrow the hazard switch and see it that sorts it - cheers dude!!

Its been a bit of a roller coaster ride of 8L ownership since my last update, I've bought a couple couple of treats for it although i promised to sell my VR6 hoard before getting stuck into this…..but when things come up at the right price at the wrong time you have to make an exception, right ?!

The first crap thing to happen was I caught the bumper as i was reversing onto my drive, i was rushing to get in, not noticed my van wasn't in its normal place but a little out and managed to pull the n/s corner right out and off the clips :keule:

also split the arch liner :( Fortunately my friend at the breakers has a few bits for me so the liner isn't a prob and a quick jiggle got it back into place, but its broken the clip so i need to order a new one. I think ill hang on until I get a wellycooler as its gotta come off then anyway and its barely noticeable now its back on the guide!

After getting the bumper back on, i took it for a pre tune baseline…..more woes! :keule:

197HP at the flywheel = 10% down on power. Which lead to a trip to get it vagcommed…….. no faults found! My next thing on the list is a decent full service and a diagnostic check to try and find whats going wrong as i can't begin to tune it when its playing up to start with!

Ive stacked up a few goodies that will be a nice few touches, first one nice and simple - polo 6R aerial to replace the foot long OE one!

Bargain double din Alpine that was listed as 'mazda stereo' on an ebay listing :)

Ironically the bluetooth parrot kit cost me 50% more than the HU! Ive got a bose setup that I'm not massively impressed with, the standard setup in my C5 a6 dicks on it to be honest! Ive got a pair of components for the fronts and a 10" JL cone I'm tempted to fit in a stealth box in the rear quarter in the boot, i can't imagine it will be straightforward so I'm tempted to just rip the lot out and run it all out of the phono's out the back of the unit, any tips from someone whose done this before, i can't imagine I'm treading new paths in one of these things!!

I am guessing your car was run on a 4wd dyno looking at that plot... Try pulling they haldex fuse next time... You might find your lost power too

Just to clarify, it's BOXTER REARS that are a no no. Pretty sure 911 rears are fine. Don't throw them away yet

i thought 911 turbo rears were ok???
911 rears are what prawn had and hated, no?

right were both right from what i read in the stickies

they will fit unlike boxster non s rears

however they use the smaller pistons meaning you have to hit the pedal harder for them to work
also think from memory the surface area of the smaller pistons is less than the surface area of the oem calipers.

id still go lcr etc
only my point of view of course

I agree daz, theres no point being experimental with something when theres a tried and tested route already available.

I forgot to mention id picked up another little extra too, but I'm unsure if its gonna be more effort than its worth so hopefully someone can clarify if you can retrofit an Autodim mirror to an 8L? This is from a C5 A6 but m not too sure if theres a loom behind the roof liner in an 8L, no troubles if not - I'm not going down the route of sourcing power to it from a switch live, its a bit of a faf. But if its plug and play then ill be quite keen to get it in.

Unfortunately it was on a std 2wd dyno, Im going to do a good service on it before i start getting concerned.

Are the OE plugs the NGK iridium plugs? I know they used to be the bosch supers, but i ran them in my VR and thought they were garbage when the next service came around TPS were using NGK instead due to the troubles they'd had with the bosch ones.

Im tempted to get a set of these, anyone used them before?

OE plugs are NGK platinums... on a mapped car its worth using a colder plug so you can use BKR7EIX whichare irridium or BKR7E which are std plugs (often referred to as copper) but cheaper... you just need to change them more regularly

The 'coppers' tend to conduct better than the iridium but obviously wear more quickly

Not to mention the coppers are £20 cheaper a set! How often do you need to change them roughly and are these the same plugs used on the MK5 coil conversion. Sorry for all the questions, I'm a proper noob when it comes to 8L's.

So I've had the plugs swapped and given it a good check over. Synta platinum, filter, coolant check fluid checked, New brembo pads - didn't want to shell out for the ferodo DS2500's i couldn't believe the price of them!

Also got round to fitting this….

007P with yellow spring. Noticeably crisper shifting and it seems to have sorted the issues i was having previously, so could well have been a leaky diverter amongst other things but time will tell- its only been on a day!

Just waiting for them to stop speeding salt and i can think about getting the paint dressed properly and swapping the wheels over. Hopefully it won't be too long now!

I managed to get a couple of bits done over the weekend mainly for a freshen up.

Fitted my Pressed plates and schmidt peine plate holder.

I didn't have time to clay it but i did hit it with a coat of zymol which made the paint pop!

I also got around to fitting the TT pedals I picked up off a FB selling page…

Picked up a VAG load net for the boot too;

I tried to fit my TFSI coils but was unsure how you relocate the items that sit over the coil on the far right of the block so thats something for another day! If anyone has a walkthrough to hand it would be massively appreciated.

Ive also made a start on the new shoes for summer but I'm not sure if they'll ever see the car as I've been offered a set with an aerocoat finish…..
