What have you done today?

Attempted to free up my N/S pinch bolt ready for next weekend to replace the top arms.

Went well, I've got the bolt loose and well covered with Plus-Gas. So please it didn't snap! So next weekend 'should' be a doddle. lol (touches wood)

Watched some B5 S4 videos on Youtube this morning with my little lad and really got the urge to buy another S4. Just can't quite afford one yet. Although, I was looking to get a C5 RS6 once I've changed jobs, so not entirely sure what to do.

Then I set about fitting to N/S/F upper front control arms and serviced the car. The old spark plugs were triangulated on the electrode and very black around the base of the ceramic top. So not been changed for a while.

The car was only getting 24mpg! I'm hoping that the service and once I've fitted a new breather pipe it might improve a little. We do live in the sticks, on the side of a hill and it is an ~Automatic. But I was hoping for a bit more, around the 30 mpg mark. Am I being too optimistic? my 2.8 v6 averaged 35mpg around here.

Dan

35 seems high tbh.

My 1.8T Quattro averages about 33, but thats all longish motorway runs to work.

The wifes 1.8T quattro is mostly driven around town as she works only 4 miles away, and its average is usually in the 27ish region.

Our old 1.8T FWD did similar numbers to the quattro oddly enough.

my old FWD got slightly better MPG than my quattro.
saying that though it still averages 47mpg with the wife using it locally.
on a run it will average high 50's low 60's ( the joys of an oil burner )
I'm surprised you're seeing similar MPG I would have thought with the extra drive train and weight you would see less.

Yeh i suspect its a couple mpg worse at most really. Hard to get an exact comparison as we never properly recorded the fuel consumption in the FWD like we do for the quattros.

as i was off work today i spent the day cleaning the leather inside my car, and changing the dreaded temp sensor, only to discover good old euro carparts have given me the wrong one gave me blue, one instead of the green one thats in , so need to drop it back and swap it for the right one

shall give it back to them and get my cash back and nip to the dealer instead

All pattern sensors seem complete poop. Replaced mine as the car would drop to limp and limit boost as soon as the car was warmed up. Pu the pattern one in and it cured it although the gauge never rose quite to where it should. within a few weeks it was back to dropping into limp again and 5psi. Fitted an OE dealer sensor and it wamed properly and never dropped to limp again through it.

Ordered full set of brand new passat wiper arms, wipers, caps etc £75 all in bargain !! As my drivers wiper has decided to only clean the screen at the ends of the blade and leave water right in my view so visibillity was very reduced this morning hopefully be here tomorrow.

Where did you order from?

Dawns started acting a bit odd even with new blades. Just like you describe its missing the middle of the drivers side of the screen.

From my work as even though there for passat i think the 07 ish octavia used the same ones as we can only order 'skoda' parts through eparts apparently but i got the part numbers of arms, wipers, caps and the little plate thing that goes on the spindle under the arms and me and the parts lad checked and the come up with vw/skoda or vw/audi/skoda/seat so they got ordered should of been well over £110 with vat but i got the parts direct on vor with 36% discount +vat !

Has the wiper made a clinking sound on fast speed now and then ?

Think mine may be due a new linkage and motor as the 'park' sometimes doesnt work and keeps the relay clicking when coming to park then they just stop wherever on the screen.

Mine have turned up this morning !! Going to throw them on at dinner after shes had a wash :peaceful:

Also with being new theres no corrosion/peel :encouragement:

Really interested in doing this too, local scrappy is breaking a few b5.5 passats so could pull the best of the lot for s few quid, mind you the linkage is causing the same stop-start leaving me with wipers stück wherever they feel like,so that should be a priority before the arm upgrade.

Had the same problem with mine a couple of years back, new motor form Tps and cleaned re-greased linkage assembly sorted it.

Spent today fixing bits on the car that i never wanted to be doing again, having already fixed them last year

Removed the rear upright on the saloon to fix its wheel bearing, all came apart nicely, unsurprisingly as its only a year old!

Bearing feels like a stepper motor, completely fked!

Also replaced the front track rod end, which went super easy (also unsurprising as its only 14 months old) fingers crossed this one lasts longer!

Also investigated the rear bearing on the wifes car, same side as mine and it also feels awful, so that needs done ASAP too. Dug out my spare uprights and stripped down the drivers side one, so i can do both bearings at the same time on the press at work, without dismantling her car as well. Had to weld a bolt onto the ABS sensor fixing to get it out then had the inevitable fun of smashing lumps out of the ABS sensor to remove that, but it all came apart eventually. Also removed the lower bushing as the ones on the spare upright were knackered, so i'll fit a new one before putting it back on the car.

So today I finally got around to fitting 'those' back plates.everything back there was really corroded to the point where the bolts holding the nearside rear caliper hanger on had to be cut off and all the bolts holding the stub axel had to be 'persuaded' off.on the plus side I got to free up my rear brake sliders made things a bit nicer to operate

Need to replace those discs but they'll do for now

Id of just left the plates and stub axle till you got the disc and pads and do it in one go and rather than twice ?!?

But looks much better with new back plates (would of looked even better without those disc like) lol

Had no choice mate, retest is on Monday, funds don't allow new discs till who knows when, would love to upgrade them but choices are very limited for a fwd b5

been busy today
had the blowing exhaust downpipe fixed by the chap who fixes our wagons at work by welding a new flexi section in so saved me loads of dosh for now:)
swapped the indicator repeaters over to clear ones
changed the one wheel over to the spare as it was getting a bit low on tread

Oh yeah forgot it failed its mot on the back plates my bad.

Yeah no ones really been the Guinea pig on the FWD and tried the A6 stub axle combo to try utilise a non hubbed disc with some sort of adapter and caliper mock up.

My hoses are all dirty so match. .. lol. I took delivery of my seal kit for my rear calipers as one seized on and had to be dismantled to free it. New piston and seal kit ready. Other than that my build thread is 2 rebuilds behind. Lol

ive got a set of s4 rear calipers im tempted to rebuild. ive got a set coming that I can bolt on and use but would like to rebuild the other ones as a spare set.
Ive priced the seal kit from Audi which was a good price compared to other ones ive seen online.

Ohh that sounds interesting, better get researching, and now that everything is freed up a bit back there it won't be as much of a headache, cheers mate
