Never would of thought of wanting to get rid of my s3 but it's killing me on the fuel with doin short distances to work..only had it 2 years :( any a3 people selling their vehicles for a s3.. Mines 60 plate black edition 33k on the clock

What kind of mpg do you get? I average about 30mpg in my 2.0 TFSI A3

I get 42mpg travelling to work & 51mpg at a steady 70mph on motorway.

Mines a 2.0tdi 170 pdd code BMN engine.

Not been all sweetness & light though......had issues with turbo / inlet manifold / dual mass flywheel / injectors & dpf.

Personally all the savings ive made in fuel have gone back in repairs.

If the fuel useage is killing you in an S3 i'd go for a lower BHP petrol if I was you.

Check out HONEST JOHNS assessment of new diesel engines!

Got to have an interest in my car ,mines on eBay and I get silly traders that want it cheap...will have a look thanks

Have you put an ad in the classifieds on here?

Your best off going for maybe a 1.4 TFSI. I don't do a lot of miles, maybe 400-500 a month so the mpg doesn't bother me. As long as I get around 30mpg I'm happy with that. I know on the motorway mine will do 35-40 mpg depending how I drive but I hardly drive on the motorway.

I'm driving up to Yorkshire Monday which is 270 from where I live so will be interesting to see what mpg I average.

Yeah put it on last night so fingers crossed..u will have to let me know the outcome of the trip :)

Test drove a golf with a 1.4TFSI. The VW salesmen said he was getting less than 30mpg as the fuel economy was appalling. Most cars nowadays fail to meet the mpg figures you see in the brochures.

I know this may sound like I'm having a go but, it's not meant to be!! Have you thought about doing an Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) course? If you're getting say around 30mpg it is possible to improve this quite dramatically by altering your driving. Even things like tyre pressures can affect mpg quite a lot. Anyway here are some tips from IAM to enable you to keep the S3 - personally I think you'll 'lose' more cash selling and buying a new car than you'd save on fuel in the next few years :)

Tips on how to improve your MPG
Here are some tips on how to improve your MPG and cut carbon emissions from IAM:
  • Keep your vehicle moving rather than stopping and starting. Look further ahead and slow down earlier to avoid stopping. Driving at a constant speed is far more fuel efficient than heavy accelerating and braking.
  • Check your tyres. Under-inflated tyres have a big impact on fuel economy.
  • Put your car on a diet. Remove unnecessary weight, including roof racks, car clutter and heavy items in the boot.
  • Try to avoid using air conditioning and climate control at low speeds as they increase fuel consumption. Open a window. But at high speeds, close your windows to maintain the aerodynamics of the car. Use air-con to get the car to a comfortable temperature, and then turn it off to save fuel.
  • Clean screens rarely mist up – so you’ll use the heater and air-conditioning less.
  • Try changing up your gears earlier; for petrol engines at 2,500 rpm (revs per minute), and diesel engines 2,000 rpm.
  • Reverse into parking bays: manoeuvring with a cold engine uses more fuel, so make the most of having a hot engine.
  • It will take most cars at least a couple of miles to warm up and run efficiently. Could you walk or cycle?
  • Drive at an even pace over speed humps. Slowing down and speeding up drinks more fuel.
  • Stick to the speed limit.

That move makes no sense IMO. MPG will only be very slightly different and you will take a hit on selling the S3 and buying an A3.

Did you not look into MPG before spending lots of £££s on buying an S3?

u will get some no power little car n every time u put ur foot down, nothing i mean nothing happens u will be kickin' yourself... i do short trips as well all the time, the way i c 25 mpg around town is fine to me, n i get around 32ish on longer trips...i bet if someone would do the math u will gain only few quid a week...one less takeaway n keep the S3 ;)

so... 25mpg - 9.41 l u will be lucky to get 35 around town in some smaller car 35 - 6.72 l ...9.41-6.72=2.69 dif 2.69l in Vpower nitro =2.69*1.19(filled up this mornin' thats how much Vpower is in my area) =3.2 quid on 60 miles thats the dif on 10 mpg... dont blame me, blame google if math aint right :ninja: so lets say u will do 120 miles a week thats 6.4 quid of saving = one kebab :ninja: would i choose one kebab or endless fun driving S3...hmmm...:ninja:

I think downgrading would be a mistake, unless you go from petrol to diesel and do a lot of miles. The fuel economy won't change very much between petrols as they are all the same shape, and the weight savings going from quattro to fwd don't add up to much either. In my 2.0T with fwd I average 27mpg, can just about get 40 on the motorway. I once worked out that with the mileage I do, 1mpg gain over a year is only £60.

Ignore the mpg readout, it's constantly wrong. Turn it off and enjoy the s3. You should be happy to get around 30 out of it. What other high powered 4 wheel drive cars get anywhere near that?

As others have said the cost to change will be a killer vs fuel cost unless you purchase a much cheaper car. Fuel must be one of the lesser costs though surely eg a diesel might get you 10mpg which is like a tenner per fill up?

TX.

I bought the vehicle when I had a company van and wanted my dream car so went for it..got made redundant and took any job which I'm still in at the min (min wage) so feeling it in my wage packet...reason for thinkin of cutting back to a diesel or getting a small car( which I really don't want to do)
I'm in 2 minds on what to do as my situation isn't great

In that situation id go for a 1.4 TDi polo. Small car, most reliable Diesel engine, no dpf, £30 a year tax, cheap insurance, cheap on fuel due to the weight difference over an a3.

As said before, you won't see much of a saving over down grading to an a3

Shorter journeys and short commuting means bigger engine! With your situation though are you still paying the car off at all?

Short distances to work how short are we talking?

I own the car and 20mile a day

Stick with the S3!!!

If your TFSI engine is running fine without high oil consumption stick with it!

Check out the threads regarding oil consumption including mine. Forget a diesel due to the DPF!

Oil isnt 2 bad actually, due a oil change in 300 mile...:( quick question on the change... Haldex oil /filter same as a normal oil change...been looking at this site-

I'm a audi specialist it's nothing runs mint no issues with full audi history including cambelt,

The full servicing with genuine parts by me,

No DPF to worry about 190 Bhp and good fuel economy what's to worry about...

The one your looking at the the 8l Haldex oil change

It's different for yours

Due every 38000 according to the book or 40000 if you want to keep it simple

Haldex oil is the quattro hydraulic oil. I would say from experience it causes more problems changing it than leaving it be. After all it's a sealed system!

If it was a sealed system why is there a oil change interval,

The Haldex works with clutches engaging when required so friction happens. The oil would begin to break down over time hence the interval,

I had a TT225 and never had a problem. It's one of those additional service expenses that Audi can add on. Plenty of forums on the subject...

nope, haldex is serviceable and has a filter and service interval, the diff and gearbox are supposed to be sealed

Spot on.

For all that, the gearbox has it's weaknesses, like selector forks, synchros and bearings, and fortunately is both serviceable, and has parts.

The transfer case unfortunately is also subject to wear, and is not a service item,in that Audi only sell the whole thing....at £1200.

I've got a 2003 2.0TDI A3 and for some reason my car doesn't have the display which shows MPG so I don't know but I know that on £60 fill up I get just shy of 500 miles, that's mainly town driving.

Iv just got back from Yorkshire and did 550 miles which cost me £70 so that's about 39 mpg for the whole journey with a couple of short journeys inbetween
