I know this has been discussed on here but can't find a thread that discusses altering the spacing on a standard 7 character plate.

For example Im looking to change the spacing from AB61 CDE to AB61C DE

Am I likely to get pulled and fined or do I stand a chance of going unnoticed?

Any miss spacing will leave you open to getting pulled and a fine

If the plod see it they will give you a tug unless its time for their tea break.

What is the relevance of the plate?

The plate will be GH05 THS, HS being my initials.. It just looks a lot better if the T is connected to the first set.. decisions to be made I think

Is that the plate already on the vehicle or one you are looking to purchase?

Why don't you buy one that starts with HS like HS11 HSS or HS53 XXX

Because I like the fact it spells ghost lol my a3 is completely blacked out from the windows to the grill to the alloys. Not actually too fussed about my initials but rather have them than some random letters

Ah ok, got it. So how much are you prepared to buy it off me for?

GH05 THS, just bought it from DVLA for £399, it's yours for £500

Buy what off u?
I think he's referring to the plate you wish to buy.

Ask yourself this question. Is having a contrived rendering of a word on you car so important that you are prepared to risk paying an unnecessary fine that could otherwise be spent on buying fuel to allow you to put the car to its original intended use, i.e. driving it from one place to another?

You're right jdp, not worth it. Sorry mr.ots looks like that 20 quid will be going towards fuel. And I'll be eating the nuts.

Sorry MrHSingh, I couldn't resist. Only kidding :)

Being serious, if you change the spacing the police are very likely to pull you over and fine you. If you repeatedly use non standard spacing DVLA can revoke the registration.

They are getting hotter on this issue as ANPR cameras can not automatically identify the car when non standard spacing is used.

I personally wouldn't do it but each to their own. I have a private plate but it uses standard spacing.

I was a bit slow to pick up on what u were getting at, had very little sleep today!

I know mate, gonna think long and hard about it. I see plates with ridiculously illegal spacing everyday but is it worth the hassle and fine when pulled? 400 quid isn't cheap either so gonna weigh the pros and cons. Might have a dabble on photoshop and see how the standard spacing will look on the car lol

Something else occurs to me. There's a bit of a disconnect with your proposed choice. You've made the car as low key and discreet as you can, adding a plate like that would have the opposite effect, i.e. draw attention to it.

Thanks for all the replies guys I appreciate it

Good point jdp, but the car now has bixenons with leds on it since Monday and I've noticed it draws a hell of a lot of attention, also fitting led number plate lights soon so it's going to stand out. Another reason why standard spacing might have to be the one

You're welcome. No one's trying to burst your bubble, just help you weigh up the pros and cons. For me, it's the equivalent of a footballer getting a cheap yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Or like conceding a penalty when playing against Liverpool lol I kinda expected the outcome but just wanted help weighing it all up, so thanks again

Slightly unrelated but I reconmend a front end collision for fooling the ANPR readers, never reads my half broken plate  also gives a good excuse to give the police.

ANPR can read any kind of spacing, it's a different font they'll struggle with.

Technically, an anpr camera will still be able to read an incorrectly spaced plate but the chance of a misread increases.

The biggest cause of misreads is actually number plate fixings (screws and caps)

At the end of the day you have to decide for yourself if it's worth the risk of a fine.

If thats true then why are the police so anal about spacing? Thats annoying to know

Well for a start, the police aren't anal, the law is.

Moving on, the spacing requirements have been law way before ANPR existed. They are there to set a standard, so that people don't take the ****. Some say they are excessively strict, and I agree, but until someone changes it that's what we have to abide by.

If you are going to do it just keep the lettering the right size and font.

As a biker having a smaller/mis spaced, wrong font, smaller size plate is part of it! But we at least have 1 plate not two.

Any miss spacing will leave you open to getting pulled and a fine

This really.... but saying that, I have a miss spaced reg plate up front and a standard spaced one on the rear, I have never been pulled over for the plates in 14 years and 150k miles, and the front reg still works on ANPR camera's, I have the speeding ticket as proof!

I've given it some thought and will probs get the legal spacing. Won't have a plate on the front anyway due to an rs3 grill going on next month

So you'll bother to get legal spacing but then won't display one on the front? You might as well get customised spacing!

You're much more likely to get stopped with no plate than you are with altered spacing. Which is a shame, as RS grill's with no plate look awesome.

The front plate will be in on the dash, only way to stay legal, has to be clearly displayed somewhere. I know a couple of lads with rs3 grills keep them on the dash (both of whom have ridiculously illegal spacing lol)

The reason why ill get the legal spacing is because the car is going to look super hot to the police once the front grill is on so just don't want to give them an excuse to pull me at all.

providing the font and spacing is correct size/distance and an 11mm of plate shows around the border, your plate can be any size, a smaller legal plate looks just as good..
