I'm in the process of weighing up the pros and cons and considering putting a warranty on my A4 Avant 2.0 Tfsi Quattro - the car has 107K miles, good history, (main dealer and specialist) .

The mileage scares many of the warranty companies off ! (Tips the odds too much out of their favour I guess !)
However Click4Warranty do offer cover, albeit with, as they describe, a betterment contribution. In the case of over 100K miles, its 50%.

Of course I could put away so much a month and self insure it, if nothing major occurs, then 'alls good' at the end of 3 years!

Am swaying towards the later I guess, but always, open to everyones generous thoughts and experience, all welcome !

Thanks in advance guys :thumbs up:

I'I was considering this when I purchased my car but was put off by internet reviews...

Its seems they pay up 50% of the time & most make you pay for an investigation where the issue is not obvious before they decide if they will pay out or not. Also it seems that the process can be drawn out over a long period, don't know about anyone else but if I don't have my car for weeks because I'm battling insurance companies then I'm screwed?

One thing I didn't research is do these companies allow you to use your choice of garage for repairs?

Not sure I need to say this but my opinion would be don't bother keep your money in your wallet.

Anyway, your a member on here so you must like your car and take good care of it? I'm sure you'll see another 100k without any disasters

Thanks for the reply SDH, yup I do enjoy the car and it and gets well looked after, the little niggly things and some of the more enjoyable mods upgrades are getting sorted as time and finances allow....

I'll certainly agree, internet reviews are generally less than favourable for many of these companies, but as with all things internet forum based especially, people are more likely to complain about the bad than praise the good, so take things in context of that really !

If faced with paying 50% of the repair cost, its probably best to leave the money in your own pocket, the only time there may be some benefit is when hit with a £2K repair bill, but there would still be £1K to find from your own coffers ! Wouldn't relish the hassle of fighting to get a claim approved either :( on a plus point, they will allow your choice of repairer, but they must approve their estimate first (understandable)

Here's the t&c, though not the full wriggle out clause fine print I'm sure !!

Apologies in advance, its a bit of a verbal trudge..........

Do you cover faults found at MOT or Service?

Yes! If an insured component is found to be faulty during routine maintenance or MOT valid claims will be authorised.

Am I protected from day one?

Yes! Cover is from day one. So if an insured component is found to be faulty valid claims will be authorised. even for wear and tear.

LIMITATION: In the unlikely event in the first 30 days you make a claim under ECU, airconditioning, or the electrical system, then there is an early claim excess of 50%. This doesn’t apply after 30 days or to any other listed components.

What is Wear and Tear

Wear and tear is the expected reduction in performance of a part due to the cars age, mileage and/or use.

Do you cover Wear & Tear?

Yes! Your Click4Warranty policy WILL pay toward the cost of repairs if a part fails as a result of “wear and tear”... from day one!. This means a claim will be valid even if the part fails due to wear and tear. Typically other warranty companies have a three month exclusion or may exclude wear and tear altogether.

LIMITATION: In the unlikely event in the first 30 days you make a claim under ECU, airconditioning, or the electrical system, then there is an early claim excess of 50%. This doesn’t apply after 30 days or to any other listed components.

What should I do if my car breaks down?

The claims process is simple, handled by telephone and we deal with the garage on your behalf. All you you need to do is call the claims line on 0871 384 1168. Claims are administered by the UK’s leading provider of motor related insurance products to the motor trade and all calls are dealt with by NVQ qualified engineers.

Do I have to pay the repairer?

No, we settle the invoice with the approved repairer directly and you will likely have nothing to pay, unless there are valid reasons why we are only paying a part of the bill. If you use your own repairer you will have to pay their bill in full, then send us the invoice so we can pay you back directly.

What if my car breaks down out of office hours?

This won't invalidate a valid claim. Simply settle your invoice and call the claims department within working hours. You'll need to provide details of the repairing garage, provide a copy of the VAT receipts and ask the repairing garage to save the old parts for 7 days. Once the claim is authorised we will reimburse reasonable costs according to the terms of your selected policy.

Who is your nominated repairer?

We’ve appointed the UK’s leading independent car service and repair network, Halfords Autocentres, who have over 260 centres across the UK and more ATA trained mechanics than any other independent garage. Repairs are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles. Whilst you may prefer to use your own repairer, remember you may not be at home when you break down!

Can I use my local garage?

Yes! Your garage must first telephone the claims line to obtain authority and agree the costs. Subject to your chosen policy limits, we will pay up to a reasonable vat registered repairer’s retail price for parts, labour times as set out by ICME (Institute of Chartered Mechanical Engineers) and up to the labour rate of our approved repairers. (currently £56.16 inc vat per hour inside the M25 / £45.48 inc vat per hour outside the M25).

What is the claim excess?

Our policies have one of the lowest standard claim excess available in the market today at just £10 per claim. If your car has covered less than 60,000 miles we will settle 100% parts, labour and vat (subject to the policy terms and claim limit). Over 60,000 miles we ask for a contribution toward betterment (see What is Betterment?)

Does my cars age increase the excess I pay?

No. There is no increase to the standard £10 excess or betterment contribution related to the age of your car.

What is Betterment?

When a repair makes a car more valuable than before (eg a new engine).

Do I have to pay betterment?

Cars up to 60,000 miles
No, there's no contribution toward betterment. Cover starts day one and repairs guaranteed for 12 months or 12000 miles, claim excess £10, betterment contribution ZERO!

Cars 60,000 to 150,000 miles
No increase in premium, cover starts day one, repairers guaranteed for 12 months or 12000 miles, claim excess just £10, LIMITATION: Betterment contribution? Yes.

Here's Why: At Click4Warranty we don’t believe you should be penalised for owning a high mileage car, it may be incredibly reliable and present no more of a risk to us than a low mileage car. Instead, you will only be asked to make a contribution if you have a claim! This means you benefit from all the protection afforded by our policies at no extra premium!

As with all aspects of our products and service, we want to make it easy for you to understand the benefits and limitations before you purchase. The table below shows the contribution toward the cost of repair you will be required to pay depending on the mileage of your car at point of breakdown.
Up to 60,000 miles no contribution required
Up to 70,000 miles 10%
Up to 80,000 miles 20%
Up to 90,000 miles 30%
Up to 100,000 miles 40%
Over 100,000 miles 50%

Can you give me an example of "Betterment" cost?

Let's use the head gasket as an example assuming 5 hours labour and total retail repair cost inv vat £700.

Firstly, due to the volume of business we place with our approved repairer, our policy holders benefit from a massively discounted labour rate. This reduces the overall cost of the repair.

Therefore, in our Head Gasket example, the cost would be reduced to £400.

After this discount, the betterment contribution would be...

Up to 60,000 miles no contribution required
Up to 70,000 miles 10% £40
Up to 80,000 miles 20% £80
Up to 90,000 miles 30% £120
Up to 100,000 miles 40% £160
Over 100,000 miles 50% £200

IMPORTANT:
Remember, cover for wear and tear is standard, the Click4Warranty standard excess is just £10 and we don't increase the premium for high mileage cars,

This is just part of the reason our policies give genuine protection and are real value for money!

Why doesn't the premium increase for high mileage cars?

Why should you pay a higher premium? With Click4Warranty you can put protection in place against unexpected repair bills without breaking the bank. Instead, we ask for a contribution towards the cost of repairs only if your car has covered over 60,000 miles.

Are there mileage restrictions?

Annual mileage limit is whopping 30,000! We cover cars up to 150,000 miles - at which point cover will cease.

Do I need cover for overheating?

Click4Warranty covers the parts that most commonly cause overheating...
• Engine cooling system.
• Thermostat
• Water pump
• Thermostatically controlled radiator fan motor
• Radiator
• Cylinder head gasket

Many providers advertise statements like "we cover overheating" which many assume means damage caused by overheating. To the best of our knowledge it actually isn't possible to cover the cost of repair if damage is caused to insured parts because of overheating. The exclusion is in the small print.

Follow the warning lights, stop if the lights or guage tell you to, and no additional damage should occur. If you've been told a warranty covers overheating, most likely you'll see an exclusion in the small print along the lines of "damage to parts due to the vehicle being driven on after the fault was likely to have been apparent to the driver". Basically, drive the car with a warning light on - your claims excluded!

We don't cover damage caused by overheating and refuse to and spin a statement for marketing purposes suggesting we do! We don't falsely inflate premiums. We do cover the parts that could cause overheating.

Do I need cover against consequential damage?

Consequential damage is when a non-insured part fails and damages an insured part. Obviously this can happen, but it certainly isn't commonplace.

Some providers try to justify high premiums with horror stories surrounding destroyed engines due to consequential damage. Has it happened to you? Do you know someone it's happened to?

At Click4Warranty our mission is to provide real protection against likely failure, this is genuine value for money. We don't include "consequential damage" cover. We are proud that our premiums are amongst the lowest available, whilst our policies are considered to be one of the most straightforward, reliable and comprehensive on the market.

What if I sell my car?

Your policy can be transferred to any new private owner as long as it has been serviced and maintained according to the terms of the policy. It can't be transferred if the vehicle is sold to a motor dealer or trader.

What don't your warranties cover?

Unlike many warranty providers, we steer away from broad statements about the parts covered by our policies. To describe cover as "all mechanical and electrical components" means that, if you want to be sure a part is covered, you need to laboriously work out what really is excluded.

Instead, you will see our terms and conditions comprehensively list the insured parts and, quite simply, if a part isnt listed it isnt covered... If it is listed, then the part is covered!

Obvious exlusions are batteries, wheels; tyres; exhausts; catalytic converters; and worn out clutches & brakes. As well as damage to bodywork or paintwork; glass and headlights.

Also some electrical items may not be covered such as: aerials; batteries; and microphones & loud speakers. And goes without saying, like all other warranties, we don't cover pre-existing or known faults.

i really would'nt bother , i took out one on my old subaru legacy a few years back, timed it to commence when used warranty stopped, in a nutshell i had to make a claim for a stupid part failure that was clearly covered under there policy T&C's. I had to get the car recovered to a subaru dealer and then they had to diagnose the fault first.
did all that at my expense £300.00 and then the insurance company said they wouldnt cover the claim or pay me initial costs, had a right old ding withthem and they woudnt budge, spoke with my solicitor who said it was a pretty common situation that happens all the time, all a big rip-off.
cancelled my policy soon after and managed to get back my premiums etc but only after suggesting i would go to the media with my case, anyway i'd steer well away from any of them, i went to a big named one and got shafted , all them work the same way.
There main cop out which in effect get them out of any sort of payout is the " Pre-exisiting condition or fault" which can be applied to allmost anything on a used car.
just so you know, the car was a 2006 model with only 29k on the clock when i made the claim in 2012, so if i they said no to my genuine claim , how will anyone manage on a car thats done twice that and beyond, the mind boggles to be honest.

Just be very carefull if you do go with one.

TBH I would save the money in a bank. Warranties like this are usually not worth the paper they are written on and actually getting them to pay out is difficult. As A4Rob found out.
They use there own approved repairer by the looks of it judging by this statement

"Firstly, due to the volume of business we place with our approved repairer, our policy holders benefit from a massively discounted labour rate."

You can bet the charges for any repair will be expensive, Assuming they do pay they may give you 50% off a bill that would be twice the price you could get if you went to an independent repairer. Essentially meaning they are giving you nothing.
There are just too many get outs and clauses.
The only warranty worth having is a manufacturers warranty.

Karl.

Working at a garage we see all types of warranty company's.

The AA and Warranty Direct are the 2 that approve most of the work but both need you to have full service history.

I claimed for a DMF, clutch and slave cylinder for my own car via warranty direct.

I took out Audi's extended warranty when my 3yr original one ran out and I am very happy with it.

I took out Audi's extended warranty when my 3yr original one ran out and I am very happy with it.

I guess the extended warranty was following on from the original manufacturer 3 year warranty ? I wouldn't imagine that the qoutes would at all favourable for my old leggy 2.0 tfsi !..........but I guess it wouldnt heart to ask :crying:

Thanks very much for everyones input, still have an open mind, but swaying towards 'self insuring' , prob wont keep the car for more than 18 months so I'll stick some away in an account and if fortune smiles I'll have the cash back in my own pocket !

Thanks again guys, Gary

Hi all , newbie here , just purchased an A4 Avant 2.0TDI S Line SE :)

I've been using AA breakdown repair cover on my recent cars , Volvo c70 and a BMW 318i and they have been great with any claims , I only pay about an extra £6 per month on my recovery and home start policy for it. You do need to have AA come out to be able to claim for the repair work and it only covers the 1st £500 of the repair but for what I pay its been a bargain , I've used it 3 times , only one repair was over £500 so I had to cover the extra , and excess is around £35 currently. Ill be transferring it over to my A4 now.

I wouldn't bother with any of them to be fair.

Go with the AA, they offer a parts and labour in event of a breakdown upto 5 times a year (or 3 not sure but mine said 5 when i renewed) and they pay the first £500 of the repair bill or if the repair is below £500 you just pay the £25 excess you get a rental car whilst it's being repaired. Had to use it a few times on other cars and well worth the money, for every service the AA offered i.e nationwide recovery, onward travel, parts and labour, european cover etc etc etc i paid £200 and through topcashback got £70 cashback so paid £130 and in one year got £700 worth of repairs done over 2 claims costing 2x£25 excess fees......... Be silly not to take it really!

I have been very unlucky in the past with these warranties and they have turned out to be worthless to be honest, but, my current a4 came with audi's used 12 mnth car warranty and one way or another its been claimed on numerous times in the last 8 mnths.
In real terms if i'd had to pay the bills myself it would have cost me thousands , so in this instance i can say things worked out well, wether or not that carries on after 12mnths is up and if i take out another warranty it remains to be seen.

I've had similar experience to A4 rob in that my most recent used car warranty was used several times. Although the car had a full service history, due to the number of things that can go without causing a code, prior owners hasn't picked them up, so I got these fixed. Couple were inexpensive parts and it just saved me the effort, but two were oil leaks that I wouldn't have fancied doing myself. Getting to know the car now so hopefully and know quite a few weak spots are sorted. I'm now out of warranty and figured I'd self insure although the AA cover might work as some backup.

I may look into the AA package myself, it maybe a better setup than previous policies.
last week i was totaling up the approx cost of the work that has been carried out on my car since i purchased last june (2014), all under warranty on a car with one prev owner full service history and 29k when i took ownership of it.
If a audi dealer had done the work out of warranty i rekon , £8k wouldnt be far off:eek:, and honestly thats no exaggeration, so thumbs up to audi warranty this time.

My Audi extended warranty cost a wopping £700 - however, have had DMF and clutch, and DPF sensor replaced so far, so it's kinda been a no-brainer.

Only problem with Audi ext warranty is the vehicle must be under 100k miles at the time you take it out.....I think.

Given the multitude of B7 faults/scares listed on here (non of them cheap fixes) then its rather "brave" to run one without some kind of safety net....JMHO.
.

thinking about that AA policy, if it only covers breakdowns, then I imagine that something major has happened which will run to thousands to fix, so not sure how much 500 quid helps. For all the jobs I've got done under warranty under the last year, none would have been covered by the AA policy at the stage I spotted them and asked for them to be fixed.

Another question, what are the major expensive TSI fixes that you've seen foot which you wouldn't receive a warning light or a vcds code pop up in advance or the major failure.

A secondary question would be what can you do which is preventative or spot the problem really before it causes a major repair?

For example
1) Cam follower failure. Can be mitigated by checking this annually for wear.

other than the engine fix which was a big one, also had a new steering rack and pump which was another biggy (over £2K ) , also rear wipermotor assembly and thos eare just three of many .

What was your engine fix for?

New Steering Rack and Pump - hmm, had a look and a DIY for that said 6-10 hours labour. Parts don't seem too bad, but suppose it's going to run to £1000 at an Independent to repair that. So complete failure would be helped by the AA cover (to £500). I suppose power steering fluid checks would alert you to if the level goes low or changes to rust in colour of a potential problem so you could search for pipe leaks and flush it. But a seal going is something that is going to cost.

Wipermotor assembly looks DIYable and around £100 in parts.

The other issue I've seen is oil pick up failure which leads to very expensive repairs. Thankfully I had some work done which involved having my oil pan off so I was told it was cleaned out and the filter wasn't too bad, but was wiped down in any case - so hopefully that should be ok for me and annual oil changes should assist.

had the dreaded "excessive oil consumption" new short motor was end result.
I checked the cost of the rack myself and original part from stealers was £1900 for rack alone, refubs will be a lot less etc ,but under warranty only new parts fitted.

Ahh, I must have seen refurb parts costs for the rack.

Excessive oil consumption - ugh. Is that primarily pistons not sealed well, or something else? I did a leak down test on my motor for some piece of mind about how well my pistons were sealed and found I only had a few percent less on each cylinder - was pleasantly surprised!

Oil pick-ups, balance shafts/oil pumps, injectors, DMFs, EGRs and DPFs etc etc.....and lets not forget the multi-tronic gearbox issues. Thats assuming the problematic stuff "is" covered by the warranty :(
