Evening everyone

Well, as a current owner of an Audi 8v S3, which is great, I thought I'd try an e-tron as my local dealer offered me a borrow of it for the weekend.

Wow - what a car. A great mix of economy and turn of speed and I never thought I'd say it, but the serenity of wafting along in full electric is fantastic!

I charged it up at at home with the 13A socket arrangement and it took about 3:40 from totally flat. I then registered for the 'Polar' system on my iPhone using their app so i could use the charging sockets in the carparks here. I parked in the nottingham station car park, 2hrs for a full charge (free of charge too!) and then in Leicester city centre again, 2hrs full charge and no cost to me!

When fully charged it showed 24miles range on full electric but I only managed 17 on it.

When using the car in hybrid auto, i managed to get 79mpg on a round trip of 40 miles to my local town, and pulled on to my drive with 15 miles range left on electric showing.

The iPhone app for the car worked perfectly too, including timed charging (economy 7 at home) and also the cabin pre-heat function which meant the car was totally defrosted when i got up in the morning and toasty warm inside too.

The only thing I hated about the whole experience was the keyless entry/starting thing it has - god awful, give me a key any day.

This will make for seriously cheap motoring and i can't wait.

My work does allow me to have a lease car but doesn't offer a very good car allowance as an alternative so i've always just funded my own car instead.

Now I'm doing more miles I thought I'd get a quote for the e-tron and although the lease was too much, it is only 5% BIK!

Thankfully a quote on a Golf GTE with nav was just within the lease allowance and is also 5% BIK, so I've ordered one today!! Wife will be getting the S3.

Now need to wait to hear what build week, but I expect it will be a long wait.

What problems did you have with the keyless entry/start? Very reassuring to see the economy that you were getting!

I've just started comparing the golf GTE to the A3 as well, spec for spec the price difference is huge. Got a quote for the golf today for £25k inc gov ev grant, comes with pretty much everything as standard including adaptive cruise control I beleive

The same price only gets me an A3 s line cod (no electric motor) with comfort pack plus a few little extras. Certainly have made me think...

Keyless - no problem with it technically, just don't like it (read: haven't got used to it yet)

The GTE is great value when compared to the E-Tron. Yes it comes with adaptive cruise as standard too, but remember it doesn't include Navigation of any kind in the base price, and it adds c.£1700 on top as there is no middle option. The other big issue with the GTE that I can see is the lack of any sound system upgrades for it - this is a bit of a shame.

Everything else stacks up really well.

Have contacted a company today which will install me a totally free 32 amp charging socket on my house, courtesy of the government grant that is running at the moment too.

Hopefully should get a build week soon - just hoping it isn't too far away

I actually prefer the chargemaster one, but I prefer not paying £95 for the 30A version!
I might see if they're flexible under the threat of going elsewhere.

having just looked at the prices of the charging cables themselves I certainly think i'll be getting the one with the tethered 5m cable attached!! It might be a bit of a stretch on my driveway.

I really need to and measure things out properly with a 5m bit of string !!

Interesting - does your car charge at the full rate (i.e. 30A) ok? I did read a post somewhere where someone had a 32A Rolec and borrowed an e-tron, tried it and it only worked for 16A charging??

No, the e-tron doesn't make use of the full 32A capability (I was initially looking at a BMW i3, which would have) but charges at 16A max. The Audi supplied charging station will charge at 100% power setting = 10A or 50% power setting = 5A.

Like Itguy, I have an s3 and likewise I tested the etron and loved it, but have now orederd a golf Gte.
Although this would have been my 4th Aud in a row, No Audi dealer would budge on full retail some even claiming the Gov subisdy was a discount.
By ordering a Gte even with lots of extras I have saved over 4k compared to a standard etron so its bye bye Audi.

"When fully charged it showed 24miles range on full electric but I only managed 17 on it."

Surely useless for 99% of drivers?!

TX.

Well maybe, but obviously the idea is not to only drive on the battery, but to swap between petrol and battery. Around town in low speeds you rely on the battery and on motorways/high speeds you use the petrol engine.

My dad has the Lexus RX450h, and despite having a V6 in that great big heavy thing, he very often reaches 60MPG on average.

Very appealing if you do a good mix of short town journeys and motorways. Problem is that the initial cost is so much higher than the standard 1.4TFSI that I find it hard to justify...and the brakes feel awful....and you have to have stupid looking wheels....

How doe these work. Say I drive 10 miles on electric from start up and then doing 60mph all of a sudden it switches to engine...this is going to wear out the engine very quickly surely?

On a motorway simply crusing at 60 is actually using very little power, i expect the engine wont mind much at all. It'll be under less load than for instance pulling away from a standstill and accellerating up to 40mph.

Plus the reality is, its never going to affect the first owner, more like the guy who has it 9 years down the line.

I do wish they put a bit more battery in these things though. My commute is 40miles. My parents live 40miles away, my inlaws live 40miles away (all in different directions)... 20mile range would be fine for dodging around town, but i dont do that very often.

I'm amazed more people don't buy plug-in hybrids. I've just got a 1.0 auto A3 Sportback which is very good, over 50mpg on a run but my wife has a Toyota Yaris hybrid. Only cost 14 grand new and does 60 mpg on short 3 mile journeys into town which is the majority of journeys. Even a small diesel won't do that from cold. Shame it's not plug-in as the electric range is only hundreds of yards or maybe a mile downhill at 40 mph. But these cars are the way forward for people who do lots of short journeys (most of us?) with a few long ones.

I’m thinking of selling my S3, I’m still not doing the miles like when I had my A6 then moved to S3 p . But I’m concerned about batteries say 5 / 7 years down the way what sort of cost is the owner going to suffer??
My son has a Toyota hybrid plugin over two years now with no problems, A3e is not the same??

I'm not sure, but my battery is still going strong. I have had my etron since April '16 and have put over 21k miles on it. Also I live in Arizona (USA) which has summer temps in 120F for at least 1 month straight and often 2 months.

Costs aside I have to say the etron does win it for me in terms of design over the GTE. Now just the fun part to find the right one :smirk:
