Hi,

Can any one advise what possible issues my car might be experiencing with the following symptoms I have;

  1. Coolant light comes on
  2. Coolant level in reservoir drops
  3. Coolant needs topping up about every 3 weeks
  4. No signs of leak on driveway
  5. Small amount of white smoke emitted from exhaust when I first start the car in a morning, but none on subsequent starts
Cheers

What year, if it's an early 2.0L TDI 03 to 55 plate it's highly possible the head could be nackered, you need to get it pressure tested.

What does the oil cap look like on the underside?

Sorry to hear your woes. Sounds like coolant is leaking into the cylinders (the white smoke you see in the morning is the coolant burning/boiling off). This could be due to a cracked cylinder head, as mentioned above. A large amount of gunk on the inside of your oil filler cap would support this theory... Does the car also misfire for a bit in the morning when you first start it up?

Could also be a leaking EGR cooler and the white smoke just being some condensation. I would look into that 1st since it is a cheaper fix.

if its a diesel then i would say EGR. fairly common

I have had exactly the same problem with my car which is a 56 plate an am currently trying to find cylinder head without much look
